Hi, i'm looking to purchase an R34, and just have a few general questions about the car.

Stuff like, the liability of the car, does it have any major mechanical faults, what its fuel economy L/100km, how does it compare price whys, when needing new parts.

Also, is their anything that i should look for on the car when i go to purchase one, as i'm always hearing how people mess with the KM gauge, and reset it as they are imported cars

fuel economy wise they aren't much different to most other 6 cylinder cars, including commodores and falcons (little bit better in stop/start traffic, but in lighter traffic not much different).

mechanical wise, they are similar to most other cars, but a little bit more expensive to fix.

Have a search mate, everything you need to know here can be answered by google.

Economy is about 10-12L/100km. Depending on how you drive it. If looked after, an NA RB25 neo would have almost no major mechanical problems. Hi-po RB26s have oil control problems, but if your car doesn't see the track, then you wont run into anything like that.

NEO ignition systems are pretty average, so if the car you are looking at still has standard coils, be prepared to replace them.

They can also have dramas with the TCS system (if fitted)

Apart from that no real difference to any other 12 year old car.

Essentially this.

Look after it. They're not a young car, so be prepared to replaced the bits and pieces as needed.

i average about 15L per 100km driving with an occasional heavy right foot and city driving mostly, coilpacks will go now and then i think that's the major problem if you can get that fixed the engine should last to about 200000 no problems! give it a good service now and then about every 8000kms and you should be fine

Yeah o2 sensor is one of the servicing items around every 50k.. Also I would like to know how you got the 200k figure.. should last alot longer than that.. Where did this figure come from?

i think it's probably the fact that people view high km imports as worn out, while things like commodores and falcons are still sortt of young with that many kms in them because there are so many of them about running much higher kms.

i'm not saying they couldn't get high kms, just saying that there is a stigma around imports with high kms. that said, i think that you would find that on a high km engine the aussie engine may well be in better condition because of the fact that they are such a detuned and lower reving engine. most japanese engines are a bit higher strung

I own a 4 door R34 and have for 18 months (i had a 180sx for 7 years prior)

I can honestly not say anything bad about the car, theres not going to be anything worse than any other car you can buy for the same age.

You are most likely going to need to change things like hoses in the engine bay, fuel pump, water pump, bushes, etc etc just the same as any other car thats 12 years old

and as long as you look after it youll get good life out of the car.

The more you modify the car to get more poiwer, obviously the more petrol youll chew through.

as long as you can afford to spend 80 bux to fill the tank every week or two (depend on amount of km;s you do i guess!) and can afford to spend money on service every 5000km - 10000km

aftermarket parts arent too hard to come by, most things you can get hold of in Aus

Just DONT SKIMP on quality parts if youre replacing something, youll regret it later!

theyre a great car, youll enjoy it!

and if worst comes to worst you can always sell it and buy something else!

Wow.... 15L/100km.... Maybe you should get your o2 sensor checked out lol.

In my stockish GTT, I'm getting about 12-13L/100km...

i think thats with heavy footed driving, today i refilled after a week of normal driving and i got 11.4L/100km and that's well within the normal range considering a few times I go into the city and how much would the o2 sensor cost to install and buy anyway

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it

    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
