Alright sounds good, I've heard old auto transmissions were difficult to work with though .. but I'll give the skyline a look ... dont know when ill find time to go to rockingham though!

So many cars to look at

R31, Ford Escort, Datsun Sunny, More corollas/pulsars

Yeah I'd love to have 2 skylines and id like an auto car to be my daily

Just really worried, my mate who plays around with shoddy old cars alot told me that auto trannies on old cars make the car a whole ton more difficult to service and an auto tranny costs alot whereas a manual one would be <100

Plus lack of skill + tools = omg

I love those old cars .. but with my lack of skill and experience maybe I should save them for a second project and work on something like an R31 or rolla or pulsar for now

Guys the R31 has an oil leak, the owner said its from "the back of the rocker cover and dripping down, could be the gasket or maybe some of the seals." what do you guys reckon?

I cant help too much without seeing the car/amount of oil leaked etc- but imo opinion basically any car of that age will have some oil lying around, and if it doesnt its usually just a sign the owner has cleaned it up to make it seem like it doesnt.

yeh a leaky rocker gasket is the least of your worries..

from my experience just drive the car and you will know straight away if it still feels smooth to drive. If anything feels clunky or whines just move to the next car as there are definately bargains to be found.

I'll try book a time in to see the skyline :)

whats a ford escort like on reliability/parts etc?

An r31 will be easier to live with probably and they are built to run on unleaded escorts were made to run on super, you can just add the additive but yeah thats just another thing to worry about..

Escorts are more of an old enthusiasts scene now, r31s are still just bunkies..lol . Plenty of people are enthusiastic about them though and if you want info there will be more online because a younger generation of people own them and play with them still. I Imagine parts will be easier to source as well..Anything you learn is easily transfered over to other skylines

I thought you were looking for a small car though

Ahh sweet the car sounds perfect then sorry for such a nooby question i dont know anything :(

Ill be seeing the skyline tomorrow evening ... bit of a waste of time to see it in the evening but its such a great buy n i just want the guy to know im serious so he doesnt sell the car ... i seem to have real bad luck in that way

I was thinking of considering a ford laser ... I work right next to a wrecker specialising in ford lasers LOL

Yeah a small car would be better .. but its such a great buy and skylines are just special thumbsup.gif

theres also this

800 bucks for a 1994 car?

I dont think theyd have the old school dashes though :(

theres also a TON of cars in the quokka that read well ...

BTW Is a head gasket a big job to DIY? I heard the actual part was cheap but it just took a fair bit of time ...

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
    • Look at @Kinkstaah's thread on the issue.
