My NM35 failed the rego check today :rant:

Going OS in 2 weeks so will have to pay out some dosh to get it roadworthy.

1) It needs a new exhaust as the join at the factory dump has almost perished, well the metal mesh covering it has almost parted. Also the main muffler under the car has big holes due to lots of scraping on a rural property I refrequent regularly. No don't ask..... So no problem as I'm planning to replace it anyway. It's just the plans have now been moved forward. I contacted Charleston Exhaust this arvo and they can have a look tomorrow.

2) 4 new tyres due to too much negative camber wearing out the insides. Only 24K on them. The car is lower than standard so having read the "whiteline swaybar group buy" someone else had issues with too much negative camber looks like something more to be done here. Though it might have to wait until I return from OS.

3) The right hand front inner rack end is worn. Kai garne - Nepali for "what to do?"

So I'm up for about $1500 for the exhuast, $1200 for the tyres and alignment and whatever for #3.

Number 3 is the real issue here.

If you fail and they upload the results to the RTA then you have to go back to the same place. If they don't upload the results then you can go somewhere else. 9/10 places upload the results. If they've given you a written list then you're boned. If you want a dodgy pink slip you need to plan ahead :)

I contacted Charleston Exhaust this arvo and they can have a look tomorrow.

FYI

Charleston Exhaust are not owned by the same people who did my and Jetwrecks exhaust.

I saw an exhaust they did last week and while most of the work they did looked very good (stainless exhaust) I thought the mid muffler they fitted and the muffler tip were not as good as the previous owners work.

To keep the sound reasonable they fitted a cylindrical (round) section centre muffler that reduced ground clearance signifcantly and had about a 2 inch lip at the front edge. Looked like it could cause some real damage to the exhaust if it caught on anything.

The rear muffler had a single outlet that split to 2 pipes.

Thanks Commsman for the exhaust offer. I bought one of Scotty's dump pipes two weeks ago as I was planning to replace the exhaust after returning from OS. I just didn't think it was as bad and thought it would get through the check. :ph34r:

The worst is the inner rack end being worn. I'm not even sure what is worn. Have to get under the car and take a look, then I'll know what I'm looking for. I'll have to find another one either through Nissan or second hand. The bloke doing the inspection knew about the car and thought it would be off the road for a few days or maybe a week whilst my piece is reconditioned. But who knows about the car to be able to do that sort of work??? I've checked Import Monster online but nothing so maybe I'll email them or phone them to see what they can get from Japan or may be approach JapLink, where I purchased the car, to see what they could get otherwise I could be off the road for a bit.

The rego is due 18th June and I leave to go OS on the 23rd. I don't use the car that often but do need to go to Sydney once a week to check in with the clients. May have to curtail until I get it sorted. I hate to let it sit until I return. Getting a blue slip is tedious but fraught with possibilities of not passing. It happened to my old TE Cortina as they went over it with a fine tooth comb and picked out every conceivable thing that didn't look legal.

Fingers crossed as I work out what to do tomorrow after a good sleep tonight.

I'll keep that in mind. I don't like the sound of reduced ground clearance. The car is low enough as it is and the middle muffler scrapes on things. That's why is has holes in it.

My rear muffler/tip has been replaced with an after market one and it seems in good order. It could be used again I hope.

my entire exhaust for my s2 c34 stagea cost me 500 bucks, that was a 2.5" with 200cell cat and 1 resonator.

cant be that expensive, middle muffler should set you back maybe 200 bucks if that.

and just borrow a set of wheels for the tyre issue. easy fix.

but still dead on the 3rd issue

Russel, Check your phone, I've left you a message. My whole OEM exhaust is available to you whenever you need it, as a loan or whatever.

Contact these guys, in Haberfield above Japlink; http://myworld.ebay....sid=p4340.l2559 They have several NM35s that they are wrecking.

I'm around all day tomorrow; just give me a call.

Thanks Dale for a loan of the exhaust for the time being. I got it installed this arvo. All bolts and stud were so rusted that they snapped when the exhaust place tried removing them. The flex joint onto the dump pipe needed an oxy to heat them in order to get them off.

After a good sleep I realised I forgot about the standard wheels I have stashed in the shed. They'll do until I return from OS. Thanks to Bronx for the suggestion and to Dale for the loan of the wheel nuts.

Also got hold of a rack piece and will have it fitted next Tuesday.

So all is well with the world. I think I over-reacted big time.:domokun:

So on returning will look out for BigKev's exhaust group buy. It looks a treat.

In the past I've fitted a web (a triangular piece of sheetmetal) welded to the leading edge of the muffler, and back down to the pipe; this allows the exhaust to slide over an obstacle witout getting caught. But it would be far easier to do it right in the first place.

    • Yeah pretty impressive hey, good to see quality products not over-shooting their prices. That's what drew me to buy the hypergear turbo, just a shame I've never got the chance to see it in action
    • Thank you GTSBoy and MBS206 I have done the compression test with the motor out of the vehicle, reason for the test was to see if I needed to remove the head and do rings etc while its out. I'm in the process of respraying the vehicle and tidying up a few things. Story behind it all is I've just purchased the skyline and it was running when I got it, never drove it on the street though as I wanted to pull it down and do it all up again before registering it. the gentleman I purchased it from told me the motor has a forged bottom end and has a decent tune through it but I was going to pull the sump off anyway to see if it is a forged bottom end. that's why I thought id do a compression test beforehand. 
    • Man, I'm kind of amazed that the price of the turbo has not changed in 7 years. Everything else is inflating beyond reason, but not this? Good on Tao / hypergear I guess? Anyways, good luck with the sale!
    • I'm selling my brand new, in the box, never used Hypergear ATR45 - and I had some additions I paid for a few yrs back when I purchased it. Never ended up having the rest of the money to add all the mods at once, so I just ended up slowly selling each part. I originally had it internally gated, with the dump pipe, however I found it was incompatible with what I was going to use it for, so I contacted (I think Ken) from Hypergear, and he and I messaged back and forth & he got me to ship the turbo back, where they modified it & made it externally gated, and gave me the 5 bolt dump pipe attachment for custom welding. (Photos below) This turbo like I said has never touched the inside of an engine bay, it's completely brand new, never used, been sitting in the same box it arrived in, covered in plastic & all. Below are the photos of it: And while the guys at Hypergear were making it in-shop, they sent me some photos of the process: I'm looking at selling this just because I'm in need of the money right now, and don't have plans on modifying the 34 anytime soon - and from reviews & peformance sheets, this turbo had amazing results back when I was researching. The turbo was purchased in 2018 for $1.9k, with the mods I got added on. Looking at the website now, for the same turbo they sell (ATR45SAT), with the current addons it adds up to $1830 for the turbo Current addons included: - Bolted dump adaptor - Ball bearing CHRA - Braided oil feeding line So I'm looking to possibly sell it for around $1800, with shipping included in that 1.8k, It cost me around $120 to ship - so yeah thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone was interested in purchasing.
