Hey, Thought i'd sign up here to ask a question. My r33 gtst has started making strange sounds usually when i go through 2nd gear once I get to around 4500rpm. It sounds like a blow torch, or kinda like a jet where all you can hear is forced wind. It only happens high in the rpm range. Im not sure why this is happening. The car is stock with a 3" front pipe into 3.5" turboback and r34 intercooler. Its been fine with these mods for the last year and a half. Car is untuned but has been fine. Running BP ultimate from the same place since I bought it. Anyone got any ideas whats happening?

I Back off as soon as it happens. But it felt like there was power loss. Im not sure on what to check. But i took a look at the 2 thin hoses from the solenoid/actuator and they seem fine. also took a look at every other hose I could see and they all felt ok. Couldnt find a crack. Although the radiator hoses are very soft. Really have no clue as to what it could be.

Ill get someone to cover it tomorrow and check. The sounds coming from the end of the exhaust, Its not a leak sound from the engine. Although where would I get a new exhaust manifold from if it is cracked? Do I go stainless or second hand?

we tried blocking the exhaust. Couldnt hear any noise coming from the exhaust manifold. The exhaust gases were pushing hard against the cloth to. I tried looking for a new manifold on the net but didnt find much. Under acceleration it makes a loud spool noise it may be from a cracked manifold or from changing the front pipe I'm not to sure.

yeh its a 3" front pipe. Could it be a bad tank of fuel? My turbo timer says boost is hitting .76 bar/ 11psi. Could it be maybe the ecu cutting out something? When the noise happens all I can hear is the blowtorch sound like a flame firing out, The exhaust note is almost completely silent so my car just sounds like a huge blowtorch.

My cars full mods are 3" front pipe, 3" exhaust into 3.5 catback, r34 intercooler, High flow panel filter.

If you're hitting 11psi then I'd say it's rich and retard. It's a safety feature of the stock ECU, it cuts timing and dumps heaps of fuel in, would probably sound like you're describing. Turn the boost down or save up for a tunable computer like power FC or nistune.

Good luck bro!

Ps it's probably been happening lately because of the colder weather, more dense air etc. Same as always, double triple check everything you've touched lately...

I tried recording it but the exhaust sound blocks out every thing else. Then if I open the windows all you can hear is wind. Yeh I was hoping it was r&r. Ill be looking at getting a nistune once tax return comes back. Hopefully that fixes it. I can't turn down the boost I have no controller installed. Just hope the exhaust manifold is still good when it comes to tuning time

I was going to say rich and retard..... or stock coilpack suffering blowout of spark.

easy fix is to drop the boost a little bit and retest (use a simple turbotech bleed valve, such as this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Turbotech-manual-turbo-boost-controller-ORIGINAL-/220630394267?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item335e98a59b )

for stock coilpacks, take them out give them a clean, get selleys 401 high-temp industrial strength silicone sealant and cover the coilpacks with it, especially around the seams; stops wasted spark. tried and tested method. the sealant costs around $12 from bunnings, use a corking gun ($5 bunnings) to spread it over the coilpacks. let it dry, refit with new copper spark plugs ($20 for 6 - NGK BCPRE6 0.8mm copper v-groove spark plugs)

It wont be a cracked manifold, that sounds more like a tractor, you'll know it if it ever happens!!

best of luck.

Mate I have the same situation, its like very loud like ur flying through a vortex big woooooooooosh sound, I run auto, r33 gtst s1, Auto, I have FMIC and 3in turbo bk zhaust, stock engine, turbo, ecu only adjustment made is R32 actuator for a constant 10psi, but cannot remember if this issue was before or after I changed the actuator, anyways certain times it makes that noise, quite loud from the cabin, as well as when accelerating the rpm goes up but theres not a huge power increase, and sometimes when climbing in rpm it feels like the engine is forcing the acceleration to bk off (trying to explain the best I can*) anyways some say R&R, some say Fuel issue AFR, in the end ive decided to get a DYNO and check all levels/readings and go from there..... its a very annoying situation, could be one thing or 10 things causing it! anyways IF you found the issue let me know ASAP!!!

CHEERS

Check the throttle body where the piping attaches if the silicon is split the car will still drive normally untill boost comes on hard it happened to me and I drove the car for a hour and a half while pulling over thinking what the fc is going on. I was still hitting 12 pound that matches the sound you discribe

    • would a r34 gtr hood line up with gt/gtt stock fenders? after latch, front bumper and hinges are swapped for gtr ones? or would the fenders be too low or high in relation to the hood surface? ( I believe seeing somewhere that gtr front fenders use some type of riser for the sides, but do not know how that relates to stock gt/gtt fenders.)
    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
