I'm looking at importing an R32 early next year before the import regulations change, so at the moment i'm doing as much research as I can into exactly what I should get. I'm still debating whether or not it's worth paying the extra amount to get a GTS4 vs a GTST.... what do you guys think? What concerns me is that if I go for a GTS4 I will have less overall vehicles available to make my choice from. Also, fuel consumption will be worse, and I'll lose more power thru the drive train, which I can't really afford on a 2.0 l engine. Would it still be worthwhile or should I stick with a GTST and get a nice one?

Any other advice or suggestions as to what to get would be gratefully accepted.

ionos, the 4wd system (ATTESA) is computer controlled. the car is in full rwd mode unless it is putting power to the front wheels, so dont really worry about the fuel consumption. Control the fuel consumption with your right foot.

with the gts4 you can just pull a fuse out and go rwd only (as ABU53 / LA LA does...often) and i have seen ATTESA save him and the car from, well, doom. so it can be a pretty handy thing.

gts4 is heavier, if you want to get good throttle control and like rwd, go for the gtst, if you want the different (more advanced?) driving experience ATTESA can give, go for that. if the rear starts to go you can still turn in, as power will be fed to them. drive both.

if you can get the GTS4 i would go for that. Just like a baby GTR.

Also, if you are importing, I would be careful that plates dont run out. I have heard rumours that there are less than 25 r32 plates left in victoria.. as I said , rumours tho, so i wouldnt know.

I may be biased but I would definitly recommend the GTST.

They are lighter and you have a greatly balanced car.

Just keep in mind that, YES, you do get better launches with the GTS4 but I am sure that the GTST would catch and pass it down a quarter.. also, there is more to life than quarter mile runs..

I think that the RWD/front engine design is still the best and has the best balance.

Maybe i too am biased, but life is not all about launching the car.. once you're off the line the GTSt will kill the GTS4... big weight difference. Less stress on brakes etc with the weight of the GTSt too, tighter around the twisties too i'd wager.

For the right price, you could have my R32 GTSt :D

Thanks for the advise guys! I think a gtst would be the way to go, my logic is for the extra amount that a gts4 would cost, I could get a nice gtst with a few mods, that would go just as hard. I'm driving a front wheel drive at the moment and i HATE it, just can't wait to drive a powerful rwd car again.

Now I just hope that when it comes time for me to import, there are still plates left. :D

Morgs, what do you have, and how much? :) I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for a local sale, but all the private sales i've seen in SA want $16000 + which is an absolute joke for a r32 (in stock form).

The GTS4 comes standard with 4 spot front brakes (well at least mine did) and I've driven both, owned a GTS4 for 3 years and driven various GTSt's over the time. In the dry, on the twisties, the GTSt's are slightly better. They are also slightly better on rolling start drags or overtaking due to less weight. For every other situation, the GTS4 absolutely OWNES the GTSt. Wet weather is so much better with the '4 as is any non tractable surface. I remember towing a bogged 60 series Landbruiser with my GTS4 :) I had to get him 10 meters and my car did it with style :)

Now the brakes, oh god were the 4 piston calipers with ABS bloody good. Oh yeah, all GTS4's come with ABS standard, thats very well worth considering. Problem is, if you reef the handbrake on mid corner, the ABS unlocks the back wheels and 4WD engages trying to deliver identical torque to all wheels :D

One thing I learned with the GTS4 is how to drift and stay safe. With the GTSt's it's easy to go too far and spin out, the GTS4 pulls power to the front wheels after you start drifting and you get such a wonderful sensation of drifting and knowing there's so much more room before you get to the limit. I had adjustable KYB suspension in my car and it handled brilliantly, better than most GTSt's but the GTS4 is front heavy and tends to understeer much more than the GTSt's if you aren't gently powering through the corner.

Another great memory I have of the GTS4 is tying both towing hooks at the back of the car to a tree, putting some oil under all 4 tyres, in first, smoking them all up, almost redlining at 60km/h I pushed the cruise control button, opened the door, stepped out, took a photo of the car with all 4 smoking up, jumped back in and disabled cruise control :)

I ended up selling the car, pretty much in perfect condition with 103,000km on it for $9500

Argh the options. Slip mentioned that the 4wd was only engaged when the rear wheels lost traction... does that mean that you will not lower power thru the drive shaft when it is not engaged, or will you still lose more power like all 4wd's?

Also, how much heavier is the GTS4? I'm a big guy :D, and with me and the girlfriend in the car, it's gonna be a lot of extra weight on that poor 2.0 l motor.

yep, u shouldnt lose power as bascially it functions like a rwd until the rear wheels start to lose traction.

Regarding the Brakes on the GTS4..

The GTST type M also comes with 4 pot calipers and ABS.

Read these 2 articles, then decide for yourself..

GTS4

Then decide for yourself.

Every person on here is going to say get this or get that because that's what they have.. this includes me.

But read up on both machines and choose for yourself after driving both.

IF you can find a GTS4...

It's pretty hard to come by one of those and when you consider that for the price that people are asking for a 90 model GTS4, you could get like a 94 R33, it's hard to go past the R32 GTST (my opinion once again..)

And that's in Japan..

So finding one in Aus let alone a good one, is next to impossible.

As for GTST's there are always some for sale..

I've seen them as low as $13K (stock and pretty average)

Up to as high as (I personally think too much) $22K for one that has the GTR body bits and good engine mods and looks and so on.

Its a gunmetal grey R32 GTSt, exhaust, filter, suspension, the usual mods, and pricewise looking at about $16K. Put it in the TP for $17K but mostly time wasters from there.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
