Hey guys looking at jumping into an Evo 5, have heard quite a lot about themand evos in general being common for rust.

I had a look at one and snapped some pictures of the rust.

I am not that knowledgeable when it comes to rust so any advice would be appreciated.

depend on the price and how long you want to use the car then the rust is not a big deal

a lot of old and rusty car has been restore before

Well I must say this is probably the cleanest one I have seen out of 8 cars, it has the least rust but still has rust nonetheless

It would be a keeper if purchased and as for price. What kind of adjustment would you make for something like this. The car is around 18k advertised

take off 2k. pay panel shop 500 to fix the rust. done.

If you take it for a drive to the panelbeater now, he can probably show you where else it's going to break out.

Do a VIN Fast to see where its likely home was in Japan.

If the car came from a winter snowbound area, the future rust is likely to be under the car especially in line with the wheels. If it's from a coastal area, surface rust can be anywhere on the car with deep-seated rust coming through too. Ask the panelbeater for use of his paint thickness gauge. You can only measure on metal areas. On top of the body it should show above 90 microns. Undercarriage; if it's below 50 microns, it'll explain why Evos or all Lancers might be prone to some surface rust. Anyway, have you tapped away with the screwdriver yet?

As you said its the best of many you have looked at, you arent buying a new car. Wire brush, rust convertor, then get a spray can of fish oil and give it a going over. Its a $65,000 car for $18,000. Otherwise dont get a mitsubishi, they are renown for this problem from this era.

Mate I look at Evos for a living every day, and I can tell you now, if that hasn't been sprayed over at some stage before (which it doesn't look like from the pics), that's one of the tidiest you'll ever see. I've seen far far worse on an Evo.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
