I am putting together a single turbo setup and need to pick a wastegate and was wondering if a 38mm external gate will do without boost creep at 500 bhp. If not what is the minimum size recommended? And if it is sufficient up to how much BHP will it be good for?

Cheers.

Read this thread, gives an idea on what works for a similar output on similar engine capacity and boost requirements.

38 might be a bit undersized.

I always wondered if internal gates, say, on GT30 series, have no problems holding boost and no boost creep problems, and usually have a flapper equal or even smaller than 38mm and located at a bad angle to gas flow, why would external wg have any problems?

That would be because internal wastegates are a flapper valve, so the flapper progressively gets more and more "out of the way" as they open and externals are poppet valves so the head stays in the gas path (the gas has to flow around the curtain area of the valve head" so comparing them simply on diameter is not helpful.

For a 600HP anything I would have said a 45mm external was the threshold of sensible.

42mm minimum, 45-47mm optimal.

Agreed, can be a pain to go bigger once your done so your better off to go with some thing with plenty of flow rather than something that "might" have enough flow.

LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
