Ok so just sharing my experiences here...please add your comments as you like..

So last year I went away overseas on a holiday for 5 weeks and parked my Skyline at my cousin sister's. Didnt tell her to start / drive it weekly. It was alarmed and immobilised when I left it.

When I got back the battery had died and I had to jump-start it with her car and then it came to life, left it running for 5 mins when I should have actually taken it for a drive to charge it up..

Went upstairs to get some coffee and have a bit of a chat..back downstairs and the battery is dead again, so I jump-start it again and drive off home 10mins away. The next day I was lucky to start it

and immediately drove off to get a new bigger battery with bigger terminals and more cranking amps. All good.

This year I go off to Europe for 5 weeks and leave my car again at my sister's, alarmed and immobilised. She starts it once a week and leaves it running for 10ish minutes. On the fourth week the dashboard lights dim

and the engine turns but wont start. She tries again, same thing. Leaves it and arms the alarm. The next day the alarm led is dead too and absolutely nothing happens when she turns the key in the ignition - the on, acc, start

does NOTHING.

I arrive back to find it like that. I get her car and 2 jumper cables cos the batteries are far apart. then I 'jump' the batteries with the two cables joined together, I notice her end of the cable in her car is HOT and smoking after a minute or two

of revving her engine. Something shorted somewhere. I try to start my car. NOTHING happens. Few attempts at jump-starting. Nothing. On, acc, start does nothing. Completely dead. Rush off to get a new replacement battery.

Same deal, nothing happens when I turn key in ignition. Headlights and horn work though. Hazards and ignition on/acc/start dosent. I scratch my head in a rage. I realise its a fuse somewhere, after testing/pulling out the fuses under the steering wheel,

they all appear good. In the engine bay fuses, theres absolutely zero Volts in every fuse when it should be 12.6V. So I sort of think its either the earth grounding is screwed or the fuse(s) as the fuse box cannot get power at all. Cant figure out how to test it???

Get a mobile technician in. He tests and finds the 80A alternator fuse blown which he says is the result of my shorting it when I tried to jump-start the car and got the polarity screwed up or something.

A new fuse comes in. Car starts. Me happy... lol what an experience.............

So how do you guys leave your car when away for a few weeks?? Do you remove the battery or what?? I had a Prelude in NZ which had an alarm and immobiliser and I left it like that (didnt remove battery) for 5 weeks at a time for 4 years and nothing ever went wrong....confused..

My S14 normally gets started once a month, (track days)And never had a problem that's with alarm armed and battery in car, has smallest car battery I could find as well.

My ford gets started maybe every 3 months or so it has battery disconnected, reconnect and starts first time.

not left my Ute more than 3 weeks between starts but no problems charge.

So I would guess you have something draining your battery.

Do you have amps? back when I ran cars with stereo's the amps would slowly kill batteries even when the car powered off. (they did have triggers to the head unit) but they have power connected straight from battery and would put some drain on it.

just a thought

sweet, do you find it still has at least 12V when you get back?

hmm.. I don't bother measuring the volts but engine starts straight up and everything runs fine so I supposed the battery is healthy.

In both my R33 skylines that I've owned I could put a new battery in it and after about 3 months if I don't drive it on a weekly basis the battery goes flat. During the first 3 months no matter if I didn't drive it for weeks on end it would still start. Considering I don't drive it much I got sick of this and bought a trickle charger and no issues since. Skylines are renound for this.

If you can't do the trickle charger then do what is suggested above and isolate (disconn) the battery

Aaaah no, I dont have any amps or woofers, got rid of them ages ago, just have a normal Pioneer single DIN CD player which dosent work now (blew a fuse when I shorted the battery/circuits??)..dont have any fancy electronic gadgets on car

i have a crappy old VH commodore that just sits in the yard and never gets driven other than to move it to mow the law (when i could be bothered to move it). it normally takes about 30 seconds or so of turning over to start. i used to disconnect the battery but then i got lazy and stopped doing it. i just recharge the battery about once a year with a charger, but other than that i think the longest i left it was about 3 months without starting the car and i was surprised that it still started. but it has no alarm or anything like that.

Ive been away for 10 weeks on a eurotrip, still have two more to go and I was actually wondering what would be the go with my 34, I left it with my grandad and he would crank it every week. He hasnt said its gone dead so must be all good

I used to leave my r34 for a couple of months at a time while I traveled - and never had a problem once I figured out what to do..

I got one of these - http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MB3501 - and hard wired it in ie do NOT put it in your cigarette lighter as that isn't connected to the battery when you take the keys out! I just put a little socket up under the dash, with a matching plug on the charger, and last thing I did was to put the charger on the dash in between the glass and sun shade, carefully parking the car pointing north..

It started every time I got back with no problems. Mind you, if I was going for more than 3 months I parked at a friends place so he could take it for a drive once a month.

And yes to one of the post above, it is the alarm that normally draws the most power, assuming you don't have a problem (I measured mine back then, but cant' remember the number).

    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
    • Thanks for that, hadn’t used my brain enough to think about that.
    • Also playing with fire if they start to flow more air down low than what the stock twins can. It's not even up top you need to worry, it can be at 3000rpm and part throttle and it's getting way more flow than it should.
    • Any G40/1000 or G40/1250 results out there?
    • You still want a proper tune on the stock ECU though. Stock tune + stock ECU with GT-SS/-9s is probably playing with fire if you're running more than stock airflow/power.
