1994 R32 GTR, the car's had blitz blow off's going to atmo for a while, gone to reinstall the stock blow off, removed the blanking cap from the pipe to have a fair amount of oil come out, what's this mean? a blown turbo oil seal prehaps? pic of the pipe i'm talking about below.

You found oil in the dead end of the recirc line? That's the lowest point, I suppose it could find its way there whilst it was blocked off at the BOV end if it was still connected at the turbo inlet end, but it could be residual from when the recirc BOVs were still being used. What's a "fair amount" of oil? 1 tablespoon? A cupful?

There's always some oil in the intercooler plumbing - the cam cover breathers also connect into the turbo inlet and depending on how much your engine breathes, you'll have anything from a little to a lot of oil in there somewhere. A lot of oil is of course undesirable - for one it tends to suggest a lot of breathing which is a sign of wear, and it also tends to promote detonation because engine oil being breathed in with the air-fuel mix has a low detonation threshold.

Oil can of course enter the induction tract from leaky turbo seals. It can be hard to work out where it's coming from though.

If you've got enough oil being breathed in to cause you running problems, then you'd probably notice a reasonable amount of oil usage across a service interval.

called previous owner, he say's he's been running the blitz BOV for around a year which would explain the build up of oil, no air flow through the pipe meaning no way to get rid of it, also explains the oil leak onto the front bumper, reinstalled the stock blow off valves and plumbed them back in, solved my over fueling issue and leaking oil issue, oil's green because the previous owner used martini oil's, which are green.

If you want to do the right thing by your car, you need to pull off the intercooler, return pipe and all the intake hoses and give them a good clean.

Flush the intercooler with petrol until you can shake about 200ml of petrol in there and have it poor out clean. Same with the return pipe.

Most important of all, invest in a catch can that actually works or you will be cleaning it all again in a few months.

Best cleaning methond is a 50/50% mix of Methylated Spirits & Kerosene.

Please tell me you had the motor and car properly inspected before purchase?

Just cleaning the pipes would be the end point. For safety sake get a comp/leak down test done.

Especially given the price it was selling at - perhaps you've just found the reason why it was cheap.

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.
