McLaren P12 to be Revealed at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix

McLaren-P12.jpg

Sources suggest that McLaren’s F1 successor will be unveiled at this years Monaco Grand Prix. The event runs from the 24th to the 27th May. The new car is known at the moment as the P12 and will be the second model in McLaren Automotive’s line-up. Whilst the debut is expected at the classic Formula 1 street race, it won’t go on sale until at least 2014.

We’ve already heard a fair bit about McLaren’s flagship model. Designed by McLaren’s chief designer Frank Stephenson, the British sports car will have dramatic styling and a two-seat configuration unlike the car it succeeds. Aside from the MP4-12C, Frank Stephenson’s other works include the new MINI, the Maserati MC12, Ferrari F430 and the Maserati Quattroporte.

The powertrain of the McLaren P12 will be borrowed from the McLaren MP4-12C. The power output of the 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 will get an upgraded to as much as 800 horsepower. It should also be coupled with a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) system, inspired by McLaren’s experience in Formula 1 racing. Speculation puts McLaren’s target top speed for the P12 at 260mph. With a target weight of 1,140 kg (over 600kg’s lighter than the Bugatti Veyron) this sounds entirely possible.

No mules have been spotted yet that we know of, however, we are told that McLaren dealerships have already seen the car. Production should be limited to limited to 500 cars, with an exclusive price tag of $ 1.56 million. We can’t wait to see it!

Update: The render shown here was published on the front page of CAR magazine. It is just a render and not an official representation of the upcoming P12. The Mclaren spokesperson has stated to us that the information suggested in this story is purely speculative. They have always communicated that they would launch at least one new model or derivative per year but they have not confirmed any model or when this will be

I've read reports the P12 will use a 5.0L version of the TT V8, which seems far more likely considering it goes up against the likes of the Veyron Supersport.

Monte is an even tastier proposition now.

Can one of you guys who's been there for the GP please put up some kind of price guide? Eg inc accommodation, food etc and anything extra that someone who's never been there should know? Thanks

You dont stay in Monaco, you stay in Nice and you catch the train in everyday. Get on early

Depending on how much fun you want to have, the hostels there are great, because everybody else is doing the same thing as you. Even all the cute girls

You'll pass the place i want to retire in on your train journey. Make sure you stop there and walk around, its utterly magnificent

You buy a different grandstand ticket for every day. Here your one ticket get you the same seat for four days, over there, you can buy a seat in a completely different end of the track. Like i did. I can PM you the best spots with TV's, because the track maps on the internet are bullshit.

Friday is an open day, i massively recommend walking the track, its all completely open to the public. The pits, the harbour with the boats, everything. The photos you get are unbelievable, the team operate 2m in front of you. I even met Jackie Stewart!

Don’t worry about having to bring food, there’s heaps there and its all cheap. The baguettes are 4 euro and its like they were prepared by restaurants, not Indians on uni holidays. No need to pack anything but sunnies, hat and maybe something to read.

... theres so much more, but im supposed to be working, so perhaps later

So if there was an idiot who wanted to go to the Aus gp for the weekend but didnt want to pay stupid prices on flights, how would he get there from sydney without paying exhorbitant flight fees?

i just had a great idea........

yes it can happen.

drive?

train?

walk?

Drive. Thats what we did. I'm from Canberra so have a 2.5 hour head start, but its doable. Once we set off at 3:30am on saturday and were at the track by 12pm after checking in at the hotel. Its much better to head in the day before though, otherwise your stuffed when you get there.

We ended up spending just around 1100 each for four of us all included, plus fuel to get there and back. Thats grandstand seating obviously.

Got the tickets and accomodation, it's the flights that are just stupidly exxy. I have to be at work before and after but would have loved the flight down on friday, bit of fun and games then on my way back sunday arvo.... hgmmmm

For this year we have paid $1100 each for flights, accom, and 4 stand pass.

can't see why you'd want to drive.

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
    • Are you 100% sure this isn't tune related?
    • 140-150 across the board. At this point hoping the grounding harness fixes it. My grounds are all tied to the chassis and none to the battery. For SR and KA that’s never been a problem for me but had a few other guys here and Reddit who told me RB really like a very solid ground setup tied to the battery so going to try that next, I’m stumped if that doesn’t do it. Never had a car have spark and fuel and not fire off before. Only thing I can think is the spark is intermittent/weak because of grounds nothing else really makes sense at this point
    • I am having close to the same issue. Can you help me with what wire you grounded to get your pump to trigger?
