Wonder if Vettel is wishing he took the new exhaust now...

Sebastian Vettel said he has no regrets about his decision to stick with Red Bull's old exhaust design, despite going out in Q2 for the first time in 43 races.

The world champion decided to use the old exhaust layout for the weekend, while his team-mate Mark Webber opted for the latest?-specification unit.

Vettel failed to make it into the top 10 in qualifying for the first time since the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The German said he was happy with how he had performed during qualifying, but he conceded that his times were simply not quick enough.

"It's always easy to say this and that now, but I was happy with the car yesterday and that's why I decided to stay as we were," said Vettel.

"I was happy with the laps I had in qualifying. There were no mistakes, but they weren't quick enough. It's as easy as that.

"Yesterday I was happy with the car. We decided to stick with the current settings and I don't want to blame it on the car. Three times I did exactly the same lap, and three times it wasn't quick enough to make it into Q3."

Vettel admitted he was disappointed to be starting from so far back, but he reckons he still has a chance to put on a good performance in? the race.

"Obviously I'm not happy," he added. "As I said, I was pretty happy with the laps I had in Q2, but they weren't quick enough. We have to start the race from P11 and see what we can do tomorrow. Surely it makes it a bit harder, but not impossible to do a good race.

"I was pretty happy with the car today, but it was pretty close. Unfortunately we weren't able to take the final step. There's a lot of work to do, but there's a very long race tomorrow, which gives us lot of chances."

Team boss Christian Horner downplayed the difference between one exhaust layout and the other, saying the gap between Vettel and Webber was not necessarily down to it.

"Not necessarily. The characteristics are slightly different but it's hopefully suiting both drivers' different driving styles," Horner told Sky TV. "If you look at the first and second sectors there is absolutely nothing between them, so the difference seems to be in the third sector."

Pastor Maldonado and Pedro de la Rosa have been given reprimands for impeding other cars during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Wow,this is turning out to be the best season. The fastest cars in race trim cant make the top 5 in quaily.Thats always going to make the race interesting. Then youve got Saubers and Lotus up the front,I think its fantastic.Dont count Mark out just yet,the Mercs will burn their tyres,Mark should be able to get past the Saubers,Kimi could be a problem? So come on Mark, get that thing off the line and youre a good chance for a podium or you never know dare I say a win.

Anyone know what the stream for HD will be for the Race?

Not keen on missing key stuff from another failed One telecast

Just run live timing and you can piece together what is happening from the times and the highlights commentary on the side.

Jean-Eric Vergne will start from the pitlane for the Chinese Grand Prix after his Scuderia Toro Rosso team made changes to his car overnight.

Following a disappointing qualifying performance, Toro Rosso changed the floor, barge board, floor to rear wing spacer, nose barge board, sidepod wing, T-tray, sidepod inlet and ballast.

As these parts are different to the ones that were originally used, under parc ferme regulations it means that Vergne will not be able to take up his 18th place on the grid, so must start from the pitlane.

I really hope Kimi can get a result today. You have to think looking at the front row and the straight line speed of the Mercs, they will have a pack of cars behind them into the first stop and the likes of Webber will need to 3 stop to get soem free air and hammer.

Has the potential of being a cracker!!!!

    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
    • Do you have some data like fuel pressure? It's really hard to say if you're still fighting a fuel system issue at this point. Could be something weird like the FPCM dipping out.
    • Yeah in that case, pulling the dent out. Event a very slight dent can create a lot of work filler-wise and there is a strong chance the panel won't be the factory shape when you are done (as the dent will result in a new high point created somewhere, then everything is brought up to that new high point... but the panel shouldn't be that high if that makes sense).  So you've filled and primed the panel and it is flat, why would you go back and remove the primer and add more filler?
    • Something else I have been faffing with while the car was off the road is making the AC work. Assuming the car isn't at a thermal limit the idea of having AC while waiting in line to go on track sounds delightful. I have actually been lugging around the weight of the entire system since 2018 when the RB25NEO went in without it working at all.  The main reason was in the first few events before I got around to re-gassing it the rubber hose that runs under the manifold had the factory heat wrap/sleeve fail resulting in this: ~2 years ago I purchased a complete used R32 AC line set but when I finally went to install it the line i needed was different where the expansion section is I found a local place that was able to replace the rubber section and re-crimp. They also added some modern heat sleeve to the hose Tight fit but fingers crossed this is the last physical piece of the puzzle needed
