I need some questions answered about changing an auto to Manual in a 1996 R33.

What is involved and a rough cost.

Big thanks

Chris

Fixed

And it all depends how much effort you are putting into it. Are you going to source the parts yourself and do it yourself? Or have someone else/a workshop find all the parts and do it all for you?

Cost will vary according to which end of the scale you are at

What's involved?  Well, you need;

1) the gearbox.....call it $1000+ for that.

2) front half of tailshaft......call it $200 for that if someone gouges you hard for it, cheaper with luck.

3) a flywheel......so that's several hundred dollars if you get a new lightweight one, or a lot less if you get a stocky cheap.

4) a clutch......that's anywhere from almost nothing for a stocky up to many hundreds for a strong one.

5) the driver's side engine wiring loom from the manual. Much easier to just rip the auto one out and replace than try to re-wire eveything. $$??

6) manual pedal box and cluch pedal and master cylinder. $$?? Depends on who and how you get this from. I'm not sure if the clutch pedal switch wiring is installed in auto cars - I can't remember how much work was involved to do that part when I did my R32.

7) a new slave cylinder is a good idea. Not too expensive. Probably a good idea to get a new braided teflon clutch hose too.

8) new gear oil. Just do it. There's $150.

9) possibly new clutch bolts, flywheel bolts, even bellhousing bolts.

10) manual console shifter insert, a shifter if the box doesn't have one, shifter boot if the old one is stuffed, gear knob if the shifter is bare.

You may need a different gearbox mount. I'm not sure with R33s.

It can all be done reasonably easy,. Fitting the pedal box is a job for small hands and patience though.

    • Thanks Mate, I did know you could do that but i know there is a pump out there that you can bolt on and it all lines up. I was told about it and then forgot the model, I figure if i am pulling it apart i will just put a new one on
    • You can also remove the veins from the HICAS portion of your existing pump.
    • Trying to swap the rear subframe on my R34 and can't remove the L-shaped stay brackets between the front subframe mounts and the sill/chassis. I'm in the UK so rust is a problem. I've used loads of WD40 and then Tunap 103 for days beforehand. I backed off the bolts forward a bit, backward a bit repeatedly for ages to try and avoid snapping. They have all moved a few full turns. The one I've spent most time on has come loose and I can turn with fingers, and it will pull down and push up 2-3mm. But it won't come out. I can tighten it back up and loosen it off again repeatedly but it still won't come out. I assumed there's a captive nut inside but if that's broken loose then I can't understand why I can always tighten the bolt back up - I'd expect it to just spin both ways. Any ideas what's happening here? I can't visualise what's inside there to cause this.
