Well I think E36 M3s had a 300 Hp 3L all aluminium straight 6 twin cam with individual throttles and twin vanos/VCT .

Not cheap but if you could source parts or a wrecked one everything should bolt/plug in . I remember SK saying that they have virtually 50 50 weight distribution front to back which keeps them light and they handle real well too .

Keeping it in the family would be preferable but otherwise possibly a high CR NA RB26/30 ?

Well picking the BMW up tomorrow getting the 328 diff thrown in for nothing. Total weight of car is 1240 at the moment without a motor but the carpet weights almost 100kg cos it's full of shit will post some pics so people know what I'm getting myself into. Also can anyone conferm a patrol sump could fit the rb

it will be ALOT less hassle to fit either a 1 or 2JZ motor.

Seriously consider this option before you get started on an RB25 install.

I'm sure you could sell your forged RB25 and get a manual 1j front cut for the same price..

but more for 2J

In not interested in the 1j I'm after reliability so forged is the go patrol is rear sump so that solves my sump problem

1J is a better motor than the RB25 anyway. On top of that, the Toyota motors have the inlet and exhaust on the correct sides for BMW engine bays, which makes it easier to fit things in. On top of that, they don't have cross over inlet tracts, so you don't need to worry about engine height so much and don't need to bugger around with aftermarket/homebuilt front entry plenums. You just use the original plenum.

1.5J can be built up for not much more $$ and makes getting a 3L engine trivial, with less legality issues and other hassles than any RB2530 build.

Overall, unless you are starting with a free (ie you've already paid for it) forged RB25 and you're just looking for a car to put it in, it makes a lot more sense to rethink the project in terms of motors that are better suited, rather than just sticking to something comfortable.

If you're committed to the RB, go right ahead. But there is a better way.

i love rb engines and i have one that i got for a bottle of jack i bought the coupe for 600 with everything but motor this build will cost less then 3 g. i can do all the fab work at the end of the day engine reliability comes down to the tuner and im not asking for mas power just around 300 and a forged rb will give me that. ill be putting a plenum on that iv fabed to lower engine height plus will get a diff sump to make it fit perfect. i dont know 1j or 2j engines but i know rb engines and will have no problem fixing it if it breaks thats if it does which i doubt. im very confident in my tuner to deliver results not cos he is a mate but because he is good plus he is helping me build this car so he will now what is in it and not in it. there seems to be heaps of 1j swaps i want something difernt and want a rb in my bmw coupe. i understand the 1j will be a better fit and more sorted but i dont like the easy option out i like fiddling and doing things differnt thats y in undertakeing this conversion

    • Yeah I've had too many issues with knock off's on the BMW's. I don't want to do a job twice or more because the parts are shit.
    • I read this and thought "ah! I will do this scissor jack on the tow point thing!" I just use my floor/low profile/costco jack and lift the car up by the tow hook itself, then slide jack stands under. Never thought about using scissor into floor jack combo :p
    • Well, my new WMI system took much longer to finalize. I actually missed my dyno appointment last Friday and lost my 150$ deposit. I'll be going back in the next week or two.  To sum it up. I only kept the AEM tank from my old setup. I replaced the AEM pump with a higher flow/pressure ProMeth 30GPH pump. I also swapped over to a 6AN low pressure feed line to the pump from the tank. There's also a pressure switch you cannot see on the pump high pressure line.    This is feeding 6x 200CC direct port nozzles and 1x 500CC Pre Throttle body nozzle. All fittings are Swagelok, because well why not. I also have a 300PSI pressure sensor up front.    I now have my Haltech ECU controlling everything. I start my pump with a basic relay at 5PSI and deadhead it. I then PWM a 3000CC methanol Injector to control flow starting around 10psi. The pressure switch in the trunk, along with my tank level are safeties before I ever get to 10PSI, and then I use my pressure sensor upfront as a secondary safety to cut the WMI and corrections in case the injector blocks or a line ruptures.  Wish me luck on the dyno!    
    • So, I'm back with bad news. There's no jack long enough on this planet that will reach the front subframe. If by some chance there is, it would weigh 200lb's.  I purchased a long reach jack... The damn thing weighted 120lb's and was massive. Didn't even come close, was still short at least a foot. It was a pain, but I brought it back. Next I decided HA! No problem, I'll get an Extra long reach jack. Well, I couldn't lift the box... It must have weighed 160LB's and luckily there was an open box in store. I took measurement and was still nowhere close.  Sadly I've lost hope and have accepted defeat. 
    • Thanks for that tip, niZmO_Man. I think the battery is OK. It's quite a new one, but I'll check. Last time I needed a new battery, everything electronic was fine, except that there wasn't enough current to turn over the starter. I decided to order one of the partial AV system translation CDs from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. That might have some effect, or help me diagnose the date problem. 🤞
