I always though they wrote it off then kept the car and sold the parts themself.

My understanding is that once the car is written off you have a chance to buy the wreck back off the insurance company, so it's not free, can be expensive to do sometimes coz insurance companies will put a rediculous price on it

Yeah it works odd ways, I got to keep my first r33 when it was stolen and crashed. The way it went with money, if I parted it out I would have made a profit lol
