SLinky-A
Hey guys, this morning took the car for a drive and about 1 min into driving my car start to sound like a rex and shaking! When I accelerate it seems to struggle and shake more. After pulling over, popped the bonnet the engine isn't shaking anymore than normal but the exhaust is shaking more at the back. Does this mean its misfiring somewhere in one of the cylinders? Btw I just got the injectors clean and tested and also replaced spark plugs. Please help its been killing me that I can't drive my baby! Also how do you open the stock r32 gtr air intake box to replace the filter? 89CAL
Mods? Changed anything lately? Can the car drive just fails at certain RPM? Provide as much extra info as you can. SargeRX8
Your coils or spark plugs are more than likely dead Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/386656-omg-whats-happening-to-my-baby-help/#findComment-6166781 Share on other sites
SLinky-A
Only thing I have done is new mongoose alarm but I don't think that will do anything to it. Got the injectors (standard) clean and tested and replaced spark plugs today and no mods at all only an exhaust. After changing the spark plugs still no change. Still feels like the engine is choking. SLinky-A
Not been running rich at all, using the same ones the NGK Laser Platinum that came out of the car. The coils should come today I hope! Got some yellow jacket coils. How do you fix the gap if there is one in the spark plugs? Cheer guys! SargeRX8
Get a gap tool or a set of feeler gauges. A "gap" is not really a fault, its the process of measuring up the gap between the electrode and the ground point of the spark plug, The top of the plug has that white thing with the exposed metal which sparks between the body of the spark plug. You measure that gap. 1.1mm is the common standard size. What you do is gently tap the spark plug onto something solid, concrete or something, until the gap closes to about .8mm. This will NOT fix your problem if you are misfiring on idle. If you misfire under boost only then yes it will. On idle, the WRX sound, means one cylinder isn't running and a coil is dead. SLinky-A
Cheers guy for the help, I'm hoping it comes today so I can get the car back on the road. I'm not misfiring at boost so I won't worry about the gap for now. Btw does anyone know how open the stock CAI box on r32 gtr to replace the filter? I'm struggling hard to figure it out. Thx again guys Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/386656-omg-whats-happening-to-my-baby-help/#findComment-6168141 Share on other sites
ylwgtr2
Sounds like the module unit is shagged.....start the car then pull the connector one by one off the coils....when you find the one that doesn't make a difference to the cars already missfiring idle try swapping the coil with one from another working cylinder.....if its still no good it's the module unit Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/386656-omg-whats-happening-to-my-baby-help/#findComment-6171801 Share on other sites
SLinky-A
Cheers mate for that, how do i fix it? So far I have changed all my coils to yellow jacket coils and replaced my air filter and cleaned the AFM's and also replaced all the spark plugs. After changing all that and turned the car back on, still sounds like a WRX and shakes and adding to that it seems like the engine wants to stall once in a while. What do I do now? Sounds like the module unit is shagged.....start the car then pull the connector one by one off the coils....when you find the one that doesn't make a difference to the cars already missfiring idle try swapping the coil with one from another working cylinder.....if its still no good it's the module unit Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/386656-omg-whats-happening-to-my-baby-help/#findComment-6173071 Share on other sites

SargeRX8
There are 3 things I think it could be, one being unlikely. 1) The ignitor module has failed. This unit is what produces the voltage then sends it to the coil to the spark. It could be f**ked for a particular channel only. 2) The loom is damaged. The wires could have broken inside the clip or somewhere in the line to the coils. 3) The ECU is damaged and can't send the signal to the ignitor to create a spark for X cylinder. All your symptoms are of a cylinder not firing. WRX on idle is a clear indication one of your cylinders is literally switched off. Fuel going in, no spark, no power, rough, etc. The reason the engine shakes is because the crank is balanced to run with 6 cylinders spinning it smoothly. You now have your car running on 5(or less) cylinders, causing the crank to spin unbalanced. Get another ignitor from someone to test, from a known working car. If nothing, try another loom, or if you are ok with electronics check for continuity. If those bring no luck, try another ECU. SLinky-A
OK so far what I have done above and now plus a different ignitor. Well guess what nothing still FFS giving me a headache. Where can I find a loom or does anyone have a spare laying around. Cheers for the info SargeRX8 There are 3 things I think it could be, one being unlikely. 1) The ignitor module has failed. Sinista32
Outside of probable coilpack loom issue - Is there a mechanical reason it cant be one of the main bearings failed causing this ? - has a compression test been done ? SLinky-A
Hasn't had a compression test as i don't know how to and most of the mechanics are closed during holidays. How big is the problem if the bearings have failed and what will needed to be done if that's the case? Sinista32
Pray it's the coil pack loom You've replaced coilpacks. ignitor, plugs and cleaned your AFM. ECU is very unlikely but it is possible. If it's not the loom ask your local garage to do a compression test. It will give you a very clear indication if you have done a main (big end) bearing. Your mechanic is most likely able to tell you even without a compression test. What year model is your 32 GTR and what if any work has been done to your RB26 ?
