Hey guys! This is my very first post on this forum, and I need your help!

I'm buying a car on Monday, I drove it today and it feels like its misfiring when boost kicks in...4-4500 rpm..it's only sometimes it does it as I went back to look at the car a second time and it didn't do it. So I was thinking a Chang of leads/spark plus/ spit fire coil packs are the problem??? My friend told me this is a normal problem most r33s have??

If someone could let me know ASAP before I buy the car on Monday that would be great!!

Thanks guys

You have made some very astute observations & I am thankful for the effort you have put into your writing. It is clear that you know what you are talking about. I am looking forward to reading more.

Why would you buy a car that is playing up?

Because you predict the fix will be easy?

My Stag had a misfire when I bought it. It caused a few minor headaches at first, but nothing major. I still haven't solved it, but I'm fairly sure it's the coilpacks.

exactly right. im predicting its hairline fractures in the coil packs, as ive read on here its a easy fix but id like to get a set of splitfire coils anyway. the car just had a service 3500 klms ago and hes got recipets that timing belt was changed and the other regular service duties were carried out....the car is great its just this little misfire problem. i took it for a test drive and told him when i got back. he said he knows it happens but only sometimes which is true as i took it for a drive again and it didnt do it...therefore he lowered the price, to compensate me for fixing the problem...

i suggest u can be a bit of a hard ass to cover yourself.

IF i was buying it i would ask the buyer to solve the problem, if its plugs and simple things its weird that the buyer would not fix this himself to sell, thats just f**king lazy, i would suggest its something more, not major just something he cant be assed spending money on to sell.

if its coilpacks then make him replace them. if it fixes it then u pay for the parts but if it dosnt fix it then u dont want to buy.

He has no clue of how to install anything , he gets he's local mechanic to do all the services for him, he just told me that it happens more often in the colder mornings, and he's never thrashed it to le it happen..

Matt,

I bought my R33 with a similar problem. I did, however, have the car inspected before I had bought the car. He was 90% certain it was the coilpacks (which as you've found out, it a common problem).

The tacho was also faulty (again, a common problem)

So knowing that those things are wrong, and also knowing fixing both are very straight forward diy's, I got quotes from professionals to fix both, presented that to the seller and shook the f*ck out of the selling price ;)

Naturally any quotes from mechanics are going to be sky high when they quote factory parts! Haha

He accepts (as like your seller, he knew f*ck all about cars) because he thinks his car is terminally ill, and you make a killing - with extra money now ready for mods! Good luck.

EXACTLY my point ^^

i bought some silicone, the industrial grade 401 selley's stuff as i read on the forum that fixes it. is it worth taking and trying there before i buy it?

Well I have almost the exact same problems and have just ordered a set of YJs so I'll let you know how they go. Assuming I get them in the next day or two, they will be in by the weekend.

Just a quick reference, splitfire is the only correct fitting replacement, all the others only use 1 bolt and sit slightly angled as the bolt holes are wrong.

Have you considered that perhaps the ones which "only use 1 bolt and sit slightly angled" weren't the correct ones for an RB?

All 4 sets I bought were for an rb25neo, and 3 of them gave me my money back because of poor fitment quality. The 4th was splitfire.

Well, I'll let you know how the YJs go for me.

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
