Hi, I have developed a problem with my Stagea 4WD (4spd Auto). At low speed say turning into a car park or reversing into a car space the diffs lock up and make a horrible sounds and a jerky movement or binding.

Now this used to happen when I had left the button switched to 4WD if say I was driving in heavy rain and when I reached the destination, still in 4WD and start to reverse into a park but I would immediately turned off 4WD and it would reverse nicely again with no binding.

The weird thing is it doesn't always happen. I could do a complete 20km trip with all the elements and it would be fine... then hop in the car and it would do it straight off. At first it was every now and then... but the frequency is getting more often.

I have bled the Attessa hydraulics which seemed to go fine... the pump seemed to react as expected while bleeding it.

I plugged in the USB Consult plug and checked... there are no fault codes.

I am thinking a wheel sensor or one of the G sensors but how do I check these? I do have complete R32 GTR Skyline sitting here for parts if they are computable.

Ideas? suggestions and details on how to check wheel sensors and G sensors would be good if anyone has a source.

wheel speeds can be pulled off the ABS stream IF you can access it. G sensor I'm not sure on. I can tell you that R32 vs C34 that a few things are different . the G sensor under the armrest is one of them. that you can check visually as it has a inspection mark on it that is supposed to be clear. if red then its had it.

I see you are in brissy. if you feel like a drive I can plug a scan tool into it.

Thanks Chris... I don't see anything to do with ABS in the software so maybe a scan tool would be a better check. Do I just remove the armrest to look at the G sensor?

What are your weekly movements I am flexible in my job and can get away just about any time of any day between 8 and 3pm... I have 3 year old to get from Dcare in the arvos. Monday arvo's are clear and this Friday I am off.

shoot me some details (where are you ? phone number etc.) . mondays are usually ok . fridays are out due to other commitents. I know I can get live data out of it with my diagun so that may be the go.

G sensor: yep pull that off and have a squiz.

No point in pushing the awd button when it is raining. Its only for low speed such as pulling out of a wet paddock or a snowbound car park At speed ( I think something over 20km/hr) the Atessa computer takes over anyway and will feed power to the front wheels as appropriate.

Well I was going to remove the console... but absolutely pissing down here... I'll do it tomorrow now and report back.

FYI problem sorted a while back. As far as I can work out... when the gearbox was changed last year by myself I of course had to re-bleed the Attesa pump system... I f**ked up and used the wrong oil which mixed with the existing oil and eventually worked it's way closser to the actuator... with it being thicker oil (we think diff oil) it would hold the 4wd on for some time after.

Replaced all the oil with the right stuff and it is perfect again.

Lesson: don't put oils in unmaked containers and work in the dark and unsatisfactory work shop or my case the shed floor.

I’m having the same issue.. when parking etc, but when the issue (4wd lock?) it makes the car vibrate under acceleration, I’m pretty sure who ever did my auto-manual conversion also used the wrong oils maybe? Could it be worth it for me to try this solution.

Mine is also rs4v, I’ve never had this issue till post manual conversion.

    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
    • You are all good then, I didn't realise the port was in a part you can (have!) remove. Just pull the broken part out, clean it and the threads should be fine. Yes, the whole point about remote mounting is it takes almost all of the vibration out via the flexible hose. You just need a convenient chassis point and a cable tie or 3.
