I need some help please. I am fitting an SAFC to my series1 stagea awd. I have downloaded the instructions for fitting it but before I commit myself to baring wires etc I was hoping that someone could confirm I have the right wires! Is this right? The wiring colours at the ecu are:

power-black/white

ground-orange/blue

air flow-white/blue

throttle-red/blue

rpm-blue/white

Cheers

Do you have a pinout diagram?I believe pin 54 has the wire that you need to cut rather join in to.

These are the pins for the Jaycar fuel adjuster (a simple version of SAFC) I used to run so the cable colours will not apply to you:

Red = 12 volts + * Pin 31

Black = 12 volts - * Pin 32

Green = input from AFM * the cut wire that used to go to Pin 54

Black = output to ECU (where the AFM used to be connected)* Pin 54

checked and I did have the ground and airflow the wrong way. It is airflow-orange/blue and ground-white/blue. Also the rpm wire is blue/white and not black/white like in your diagram. That is if B=black and L=blue. Must be the right one though as it is in that pin position

Yep colours may vary as the S1 had three different ecus and so three different looms. The pin numbers are probably more important. If you look there is a fairly wide choice of pins for the power and earth. You should check with a meter to ensure thjat you are using a switched source so that the SAFC is only live with the key on.

thanks mate. I have wired it up now as per the SAFC instructions. I used the power supply that they suggested which is pin 67 which according to your pinout diagram is the control unit power supply and the earth I used is pin 55 which calls it the MAFS ground. Hopefully I have done it correctly!! I haven't plugged in the SAFC yet and the airflow signal I have left connected via a bullet (well spade actually) connector. I am hoping to get it set up tomorrow so all I have to do is plug in the SAFC and join the airflow connection to it.

The airflow signal wire should be cut so you should have two connections to make to it - the signal from the airflow meter goes into the safc (white wire) and the out put from the safc (yellow wire) goes to the other side of the cut wire which leads to the ecu. Note also their instruction that the brown earth wire needs to go closer to the ecu than the black earth wire. This is asuming that you have an SAFC II with the screen. If you have the simple SAFC with just the knobs then there is no brown earth wire to worry about.

Do you have a wideband afr meter or are you going to take it to a dyno for tuning?

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
