Right, I've hopefully sorted out all my issues :D

First of all, the catch can is on it's way back to Brad to be modified to suit the new intercooler piping. Hopefully I worked out where it needs to be modified correctly, but I gave it a bit more room than I thought it needed for safety. Fingers crossed it doesn't affect the catch cans functionality too much, but I don't think it will. Revised catch can will have some Earls fittings as well, so I'm looking forward to getting it back :)

Then I phoned up my local brake specialist and managed to source a replacement check valve for the brake booster, will pick that up tomorrow. After some googling, I believe I have also sorted out the throttle cable problem as well. Most people seem to have solved it by purchasing a cable clamp from a bicycle store and clamping off the cable at the accelerator pedal to keep the tension. So I'll drop into my local bike store tomorrow to see what they've got. Fitting for the IAC valve should be sorted out this week sometime as well.

Went and picked up an Earls -12 weld on fitting today, thought it easier than trying to find an appropriately sized pipe cut off. Just at a local fabricator now getting it welded on, let's hope the blokes welding skills are better than his customer interaction skills. What a traumatic experience lol.

But if it's a tight weld and it all works then it's worth it. Bought some -12 hose for the IAC valve as well, but realized too late that this stuff is not very flexible, I'm worried it will kink due to the positioning of the IAC on the Plazmaman. Will find out tomorrow :/

Will do a better update with pictures etc. tomorrow, but for now... It's done. All back together, and... I'm ready to burn it. Trailering it to my tuner on Thursday to hopefully get tuned on Friday. If he doesn't finish it on Friday then it will be stuck there until they reopen on the 21st of May, so fingers crossed.

Unfortunately I couldn't sort out the injectors to get it to idle, my NIStune software doesn't work properly and wouldn't sync. So apart from priming the fuel pump a few times and fixing the few fuel leaks here and there that we found, I couldn't do much else in the way of making sure it was all correct. Means I will need to pay my tuner to bleed the cooling system and fix any other mistakes that we have made, of which I'm sure there will be many.

Also rounded the grub screw in the HKS rail as it was leaking so we tried to get it out but couldn't fit an Allen key in between it and the plenum nicely. Was one of those things where you just think it must surely be about to crack loose and then bam, the fkn thing is rounded and it's a drill-it-out job. In hindsight we should have been patient, but it's done now. Extremely pissed off about that. I'm glad it's all finished because I am done with it.

Promised pictures:

Firstly, this:

Is a much better design than this:

533182_10150661707002541_519882540_9594366_1609205903_n.jpg

And that's one problem solved:

Next up, getting the fitting welded onto the intercooler pipe. What a mission and a half that was. Took 4 hours of driving around before I found someone who would do it, then the first thing the bloke says to me when the secretary (pretty little thing she was) got him for me was "waddya want ya dumb flamin mongrel?". So he had the customer service of a cave troll, but I managed to communicate with him. Lucky for me he knew his way around a tig, and this is what I ended up with:

Very happy with the end result, and that's the next problem solved. Then onto the throttle cable. I came up with an even better idea than the cable clamp, anyone recognize what this is?

It's the throttle cable adjuster off the gyro cable on a BMX. Little modification here and there, and bam:

That's another problem solvered. Had to film the throttle body in action seeing as I didn't have anyone to tell me if it was opening fully or not, so may as well upload that too:

The quick taps was me trying to dislodge the adjuster or see if it would get caught and jam the throttle open somehow, but it's rock solid. Gotta be happy with that. Now we are up to where my previous post comes in, so I'll skip ahead to getting it to the tuner yesterday. Not really a part of the build, but it was interesting to say the least so I'll post some pictures anyway :P Getting a car as low as mine onto a standard car trailer without the use of power brakes or steering is a right challenge. The front bumper had to stay off, the rest we sorted out as we went along...

Took a few tries to get it lined up, was a lot of work between two guys lol.

This is where things started to get tricky:

563135_10150661709122541_519882540_9594378_1449721405_n.jpg

Very tight:

559586_10150661709357541_519882540_9594379_838966912_n.jpg

This was with the trailer parked on a slope to eliminate as much angle on the ramps as we could, AND with the front of the trailer jacked up about 50cm off the ground. Still too tight. Ended up having to get my mates mum and my dad to stand on the back of the trailer to bring it down enough to get on. But finally we did:

Then it took about 30 minutes longer than normal to get to my tuner, so we arrived at about 6pm. Luckily the guys were just hanging around having a few beers and didn't mind us being late, so they came and gave us a hand to get it off. Took 4 of us and two trolley jacks to get it off, but eventually we did and this is where I last saw it:

149323_10150661709802541_519882540_9594381_2087206831_n.jpg

I was hoping it might get done today, but that was probably a bit optimistic given the extent of modification it went through and hasn't even been started yet. For all I know we did it all wrong and there are a thousand problems with it, so will just have to see. Tuner gave me a call today to say they were a bit behind and probably not going to get my car finished today. I'm assuming this means they hadn't started on it at all yet because he didn't mention anything had been done or any problems. He did say he is going to work on it tomorrow to try to get it done for me before they lock the gates for a month, so I appreciate that. Especially as he is getting married on Sunday :P

Possibly time for another update...

Problems. Huge problems. I've got no idea how/why/what happened, but somehow my ECU is corrupt. Sean couldn't get it started on Saturday as the maps are scrambled all over the place. He even tried starting again from scratch, but apparently nothing made any difference, ECU is just completely messed up. As he is now away on leave, he organized with my old tuner just down the road to get it finished, and I just got off the phone with him. He has got a new ROM for the ECU, so tomorrow he is going to try installing the new ROM to see if that works, but if not then it's the ECU. In which case, I may be digging into my Europe-trip funds to pay for a Vipec V44 plug in :( Don't see the point of replacing the stock ECU again when I plan on switching to a Vipec sometime down the track anyway.

Guess it is now just a waiting game to determine whether this tune is a $500 exercise as expected, or a $4000 exercise :/

so your idle problem was just a dud one way valve for the BMC?

ive been thinking of replacing mine as I can pump my brakes at a standstill and it pulls too much vac and drops the revs etc..

Care to enlighten me as to where you found such an awesome thing?

Idle problem??? Never had any serious idle problems... I had to replace the brake booster check valve as I accidentally busted the stock one trying to relocate it into a new hose.

But if it helps, I got it from CBA :)

Forgot to update this.

Decided on Friday to purchase this:

R34%20GTT%20small-500x500.jpg

Along with Haltech 3 bar MAP sensor and IAT sensor, so will be doing away with the AFM now too. Hoping against hope that this finally sorts out my issues and gets the car running, will find out maybe Wednesday/Thursday this week with any luck :/

It will be awesome man!!! Now you can do a nice intake pipe for more Bling ;)

It'll be good to see the results coming from both cars soon! Shame its a bit far away to cruise with you though unless the meet up point is Alice Springs? :P

Haha yehhhhh, unfortunately I don't think my car would make it that far, I couldn't even trailer it from point A to point B without breaking something :P

Will get a 4" intake pipe made up some time in the future, but for now I need to recover funds. This ECU wasn't meant to happen for another 6 months at least, so I'm running on empty at the moment :(

  • 2 weeks later...

Yeah Mongrel is going to finish ahead of me

LOL

Good luck man, cant wait!! :w00t:

yeah but not on the track

its kinda funny as the 3 of us are basically building the same car well that is if Hanaldo dont bitch and uses e85

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
