Hot Dog Muffler For Dropping 4Db?

Recommended Posts

And if you have to do a db test they will probably tell you to change as its not allowed to be adjustable, does not matter what the engineer has signed off on.

Cant. As long as they dont hear it they have nothing to stand on. Especially when the controller cant be found :-)

Also should add i also have a cat. a highflow shit one that probably does less than nothing.

The EPA down here are not idiots.

They are well aware of Varex mufflers. If you have one, you fail.

1.buy varex

2.get old rusty muffler from exhaust shop

3.put rusty case over varex

4. Profit??

I have no interest in dodging any thing up, I want it 100% legal so I don't have to worry about it if I have to get it tested.

16-18" x 12" x 8" rear muffler

that will get your 3" exhaust legal easily if you have a decent middle muffler.

I didn't miss your post titan, I will measure the ones that are in there and see if there the same size, put on hold for now tho as I think I f**ked my clutch on the weekend so I have to pull the box out and see what the problem is, atm I just wanna burn the f**ker!

Welcome to nissan ownership.

I've had it for five years now, lately tho 5 things have f**ked up one after the other, most minor but the most it has been running fine for in between each is 1 week, now I have to pull the box out again to check my new clutch

1. make plate steel in shape of 3" flange

2. drill 1.5" hole in middle

3. bolt on somewhere towards rear of exhaust in place of a gasket

4. insta shutup.

the biggest issue is getting it quiet at idle/low revs with big pipes, easier with 3" than 3.5" or 4" as there isnt enough exhaust gas flowing through to make the mufflers work their best

you can stick huge mufflers in it like i/you have done (mine is 4" -> 3.5") and you are fine at revs, but dont pass the idle test (which isnt applicable in the ACT (or NSW afaik) but is part of the VIC test) as that is the part of the test i assume you are failing on? or are you failing at revs?

No idle test, it has to be 90db or lower at 4800rpm, no other tests for noise are done.

Doesnt matter, maybe in vic its different but. In NSW, my engineer said its tested shut, driven shut, there is nothing they can say. Even if they know its a varex. He said there is no difference in me testing it with that or having a quiet pipe then swapping it at home. Except how fast it can be done. He instructed me when harassed about it to take it to the top as he told others who succeeded.

Thats NSW laws though they smash you's alot harder there.

what about adjusting the idle speed lower? would that help the idle test..

i have a 3 1/2inch system with restrictor in muffler but will put a 4inch nur spec muffler on soon, so ill be in the same boat, might be 100db so would 2 big 3 1/2 inch mufflers do the job?

hmm have to wait and see, i think in queensland this isnt so much a problem..

Who is your engineer in NSW? PM me if you don't want to post here. I have done the ring around and there's nobody I

found that would test a variable exhaust at anything other than fully open.

To the OP: it's super unlikely that you'll get done for 92dB vs 90dB. You can get that much variation from temperature and surroundings on the day (lower temp = louder; harder surroundings = louder). If you pass the d1ckhead test you could probably get away with 95dB :P Resist the temptation to tell Mr. Po Po to jam it, and you will avoid being in a world of hurt.

Cheers,

SW
