Hi guys, Not happy at all but I think I've blown a turbo or turbo's. Engine isfresh. Rebuilt N1 spec motor with 4000km on it. Has Rebuilt R32 Nismo Turbo's.

Had some work done, tuned etc. Car is making 302rwkw on 18 psi. Been driving it for 2 weeks since and its been great and fine - no issues, but today I noticed a tiny bit of whit smoke under boost. I didnt think too much of it. But then earlier I drove it, and gave it a bit of a boot. As I did I heard a big bang, with a cloud of black smoke. :( = not good

Now the car doesnt boost at all. Quite undrivable... And if it hits boost, like 3000 or over. Exhaust just pours out with ALOT of white smoke. :( From all the reading ive done, means a blown turbo or turbo seal. Does this sound like the turbo's have gone?

I suppose now I have the option of getting them rebuilt, or buying some new Garrett 2860's or something etc. What do people recommend. $2-3k is probably about my budget.

A pair of -7s will probably be about $400 cheaper than -9s once you take into account new actuators. From the rb26 dyno sticky they seem identical to at least 300kw, but -9s would work a bit better if you push higher.

You should be able to get them locally for that sort of money - check out the Traders section.

Put it this way - the bad news is you've blown turbo(s).

The good news is, they were crap to begin with so you can put on something much better.

The replacement option for response (-9s or -7s) will make just as much power as your Nismo turbos, but will be noticeably more responsive.

Rebuilding to start off with was kinda a waste of money unfortunately.

Thanks for the advice. -7's sound like the go to still have a more responsive 300awkw. The nismo turbos were already freshly rebuilt when I got the car. I guess they couldn't handle 19psi? :(

Any idea on what $$ for labour on a full turbo swap?

This seems okay. I dont wanna sound dumb but what are the actuators used for?

Controlling boost pressure.

As for turbo swap, give a few places a call.

If they tell you they need to take the engine out, hang up... After you tell them they're morons!

Ask deano. Haha he is doing his -5 upgrade

At the moment. He has spent 2 days so far. He is spewing he didnt pull the motor out

I spose it comes with experience. I don't have it but know people that can have them out and in within 5 hours.

Also, get Deano to call or PM me!

Is it worth the lag and just going to 300kw? I don't think so. Besides its been discussed to death. -7 300kw beats -5 300kw down the quarter. Don't know where I saw it, but one of the -5 vs -7 threads yielded that.

What kind of sick individual buys -5's to make 300Kw, unless they are planning to go further at a later date ?

    • Nice shot! They look super clean. The roof rack delete on the black one is interesting. Would like to see more pictures from different angles. It's subtle but could make quite a difference to how the car looks in profile.
