Why Did Nissan Leave Gt1 In 2012

Nissan never ran a team - JRM did. And they have changed their focus this year away from GT1 to the world enduro championship - in a Honda.

You tend to find with history that very few GT1 teams hang around in that championship for long as they are all pretty much private companies.

Well I bet Nissan werent too impressed with building half a dozen (at the most) purpose built GT1 spec GT-R which wouldve cost them millions of dollars to develop and build and then with the stroke of a pen towards the end of last year the rules changed and FIA GT1 decided to run GT3 spec cars this year. Leaving Nissan with those cars sitting in their collection with nowhere to race.

There's a GT3 spec GT-R but its still in its development phase and it seems Nissan would rather privateers race the cars without them having to invest like they did with the GT1 GT-R. No teams stepped up and JRM had no funds to spare to race in GT1 again so it didnt happen.

And lastly but no least Nissan have the silverware, thats all they care about, they won the championship last year. Target achieved.

Thanks was spot on Nosofast

So GT1 changed the rules within GT1 to favor those cars from GT3 and now it's more or less a GT3 race.

Correct Nosofast

Yes. Originally it was to be mix of GT1 and GT3 cars Ferrari and McLaren were not happy with this and would not race in championship with a mix of cars, only GT3 would do for them. And so it came about and this year the championship is only for GT3 racers. NZ driver Mike Halliday has a drive in a Porsche GT3R and won the championship race at Zolder this weekend past. Its a shame JRM arent running a pair of GTRs in it, they had a lot of technical support from NIssan/Nismo with some gun driver lineups including David Brabham who ironically is racing for JRM in the Honda LMP in WEC for them this year with Peter Dumbrek and Karun Chandok.

No idea where the GT1 GT-Rs will end up (Nissan storage, collectors, historic racing etc). Not sure who owns which cars between Nismo and JRM and if the cars were brought or leased by JRM.

    • I remember test driving this car at Odaiba. All the controls are very light so it's good for commuting. I don't think a 1.2L turbo would make sense in the US though, you would be constantly deep in the boost in highway cruising.
    • As the Bogan Cruise Ship has nothing wrong with it, and is perfect the way it is, I have decided to fix that issue, nothing major, just a little tidy up and upgrade some parts that don't really need to be upgraded  1. Upgrade the interchiller, basically another fancy pants modern and efficient condenser, a larger reservoir (current one only holds about 500ml) and a better pump (the current pump has a little rattle, so......while I'm in there.....) 2. Move the battery to the boot so I can use that real-estate to fit in a nice big reservoir where the battery currently is As for a new car, I'm holding off buying one for a few reasons: 1. Not enough garage space for another nice car, yes....I consider the Bogan Cruise Ship a nice car that needs a roof over its head, which leads to point 2 2. I'm buying a joint down the south coast next year, hopefully I can find a joint with a nice big double garage that I can get a car lift in, or, it has a massive shed for lots of cars, and a lift (I really really want a car lift) 3. I cannot decide what I want, a new freshness with all the mod cons, or a fairly old thing that I can play with when I'm bored (old as in steel bumper) In other news, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and it isn't a train coming to run me over  Not that I'm counting

    • Yes 116PS... I don't want to sound like a Toyota PR employee but it goes way better than the figures would suggest. Typical Toyota understating the performance. I'd say it at least had 130PS! 😅 Seriously though my son will be going for his licence in 2026 and it's a good manual car he can learn on without getting in too much trouble, and after that he will inherit it.
