trans was opened up today

had a proper oil flush/replace 10,000km ago.... currently the fluid looks like red glitter paint. there is absolutely nothing left of the friction bands. And before you say it, NO i dont do burnouts. This is after normal use (by me). maybe the previous owners were not so kind...

so its in for a complete rebuild plus trans kit. $3000 approx..... and the shift kit is the cheapest bit.

this probably explains why my gearchanges have felt so slow and lethargic. unfortunately it gave no other warning signs, crunches or bangs, it just stopped working.

Not stressed about it. Love the car to bits

factory spec bands, solenoids, etc. just the modified valve body. theyve been recommended as a bit of a nissan specialist who do in-house component mods.

the positive is, its just $1000 more than a replacement USED gearbox.... which i see as the better option

another note: have researched the re4r01b gearboxes, turns out the ones fitted to the VQ motor has different input/output shafts to the RB version, plus the bellhousing..... so you cant assume that all those gearboxes will fit

heres the diagnosis...

upon disassembly, the guys found that the first clutch drum had failed. the friction plates should be retained by a large circlip - that clip had popped out, allowing the friction plates to travel past their correct location and eventually shave themselves down to nothing. this generated extra heat and extra load within the trans. The trans fluid in the pan looked like glitter paint.

The 4 speed auto has only 5 friction plates in there, mine has now been upgraded to the turbo version 7 plate and drum assembly.

the servos have also been discarded and replaced with new larger units from a turbo assembly.

the solenoids have all been replaced for new

the torque converter has been stripped down and rebuilt with all new internals

and lastly, the valve body has had a custom upgrade (not transgo.... apparrently his are better)

all this , including R and R, and a weeks labour.... $3050

The trans guy say this is THE way to upgrade the RE4R01B 4 speed auto box. In my opinion it is too much money to spend on a V35 upgrade unless youve already broken it, however it works out to being only $500ish more than buying and installing a second hand box from a wrecker..... so definitely better for the money.

Will upload a vid to show the improvement next week

under instruction from the trans builder, i am not allowed to use full throttle until after 1000km and a re-check... so here is a short clip of about half throttle from standing start. thanks to my back seat passenger ;)

First to second... is quite grabby. Probably too harsh for my liking... we'll see if it eases up after bedding in...

    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
    • @Stringycheese  Have you only gone to the one blue slip workshop?  There will be a heap of them where ever you live, good odds that the next place you go to will pass the car.  Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every blue slip / engineering workshop will be different and will be happy passing or failing different things - despite working from the same set of rules. It's kinda like 2 lawyers arguing over a piece of legislation, each saying their interpretation is correct. Might seem strange that this happens when it comes to getting a modified car passed, but this is very much a thing. A big part of the game is finding an engineer / workshop that is on the same page as you.
    • Bah. I daily mine. ~60km per work day, 10-12 thousand km per year. What's the point of having a dirty old Datto and leaving it in the shed. It needs to be driven and enjoyed while the govco allows us to do so. It will only be a few years before we're forbidden to even start up internal combustion engines.
    • Judging by that spring perch and the normal looking spring on it - not a coilover. Well.... it is a coilover, just a stock format coilover, rather than what everyone calls a coilover.
    • Yes it is. We get stock from Nismo directly. I'm happy to take photos/video of it as proof before I ship it with timestamps or whathaveyou.
