Hi all , I've been having some dramas with fuel leaks on my R33 at the fuel filter . I was under the impression that these cars used 8mm or similarly sized high pressure hose but I don't think this is the case . When I started using Eflex E70 I changed the filter for a new Z201 and fitted new EFI hose as well . Long story short I kept smelling wafts of fuel and finding leaks on the lower side of the filter . Funny thing was sometimes it leaked and sometimes it didn't and no amount of tightening made a reliable fix . In the end I replaced the filter again and refitted the original I assume factory hose which is in reasonable condition - and doesn't bloody leak .

I did some research because I used to know of a workshop that stocked a large variety of low and high pressure fuel hose including 7.5mm . Wurth stuff I think it was .

It seems that Super Cheap advertise 7.5mm fuel hose which I'm going to look at later today and I'm taking the used filter and some of those nice Nissan style stainless clamps along too . One thing you ntice with the OE Nissan hose is that it has a smaller ID and OD and the std clamps struggle to get over the larger 8mm or 5/16" ID EFI hose .

Also , I remember reading here in the past that the in tank pumps EFI hose isn't the normal stuff and using regular EFI hose causes dramas . I found this link to a Gates page that quotes some SAE fuel hose standards and interestingly they talk about special linings for nastier fuels - like current low emissions stuff and ethanol . They ALSO mention that in tank pump hose needs to have the special lining on the inside AND outside to stop it swelling failing or whatever . It makes sense that hose manufacturers are not going to spend money on expensive outer linings for external hoses when its not needed but they have to when its exposed to fuel in a fuel tank .

Fuel hose has to be right for obvious reasons and it would be soul destroying to watch you car burn to the ground by the side of the road .

I don't know if outer linings are helpful for in tank installation. After all, you have two cut ends on each piece of hose, and outer coatings won't stop fuel penetrating the inner layers. Fuel hose for in tank applications is fundamentally fuel resistant, all the way through.

From memory it is 7.5mm hose as you suspect, not 7.9mm or 8mm. I have sections of all sorts of hose in the garage, never know when I needed something and the R33 used to be my only car. I measured the pipe diameter of the fitting and it is smaller than 8mm, so I used 7.5mm hose.

I decided to stick my Verynear calipers on the just removed Ryco Z201 and was surprised to find its inlet tube is slightly smaller than the outlet tube .

The inlet side OD is ~ 7.91-2mm and the outlet is ` 8.00-8.02mm .

The box says made in China for GUD which looks like Ryco in Victoria ...

I wonder if this is a screw up on the manufacturers part or if genuine filters are like this too .

In my case these "Ryco" filters only leaked on the inlet side and the only difference is the tube diameters , it must be just enough not to allow the 5/16 hose to clamp up on though it always did on the cars steel tube side .

I think I'll start using genuine filters if the price isn't stupid .

On the subject of filters people elsewhere are reporting start up rattles and anti drain back valves not working in "Ryco" oil filters .

I'm actually getting a bit of this and I remember thinking that the last Z145 I bought was remarkably cheap .

On site reckoned that Ryco Aust was trying to take their "supplier" to task over manufacturing faults with a number of fuel filters .

Does anyone have the part numbers handy for ECR33 oil and fuel filters ?

just checking Disco but you did use proper fuel injection clamps ..not normal hose clamps..I got these for 1$ each at some speed shop...worth replacing..

I use the same. For clamps I go down to the local pick a part and fill my pockets with old merc worm drive clamps :) they shit all over locally available shit and don't cut into the hose.

The hose in the fuel tank is a butyl rubber inner and outer, where normal EFI hose for outside of tank is butyl inner, nylon type crap outer and not fuel resistant.

Someone decided to use the nylon outer EFI hose in a fuel tank once, I changed a mates fuel pump and found crusty bits of fuel hose and pieces in the tank lol....

The fuel tank genuine stuff is like $120 a metre or so.

Yep I've always liked Nissan OE fuel line clamps , those narrow band Wormald style ones are a last resort .

The hose I had used was some American marked -7 5/16 stuff .

Going to check out Explosive Racing at Peakhurst tomorrow , cheers A .

And I will be measuring the barbs on the filters too .

    • Did this end up working? Did you take some pictures?
    • And finally, the front lower mount. It was doubly weird. Firstly, the lower mount is held in with a bracket that has 3 bolts (it also acts as the steering lock stop), and then a nut on the shock lower mount itself. So, remove the 3x 14mm head bolts , then the 17mm nut that holds the shock in. From there, you can't actually remove the shock from the lower mount bolt (took me a while to work that out....) Sadly I don't have a pic of the other side, but the swaybar mounts to the same bolt that holds the shock in. You need to push that swaybar mount/bolt back so the shock can be pulled out past the lower control arm.  In this pic you can see the bolt partly pushed back, but it had to go further than that to release the shock. Once the shock is out, putting the new one in is "reverse of disassembly". Put the top of the shock through at least one hole and put a nut on loosely to hold it in place. Put the lower end in place and push the swaybar mount / shock bolt back in place, then loosely attach the other 2 top nuts. Bolt the bracket back in place with the 14mm head bolts and finally put the nut onto the lower bolt. Done....you have new suspension on your v37!
    • And now to the front.  No pics of the 3 nuts holding the front struts on, they are easy to spot. Undo 2 and leave the closest one on loosely. Underneath we have to deal with the wiring again, but this time its worse because the plug is behind the guard liner. You'll have to decide how much of the guard liner to remove, I undid the lower liner's top, inside and lower clips, but didn't pull it full off the guard. Same issue undoing the plug as at the rear, you need to firmly push the release clip from below while equally firmly gripping the plug body and pulling it out of  the socket. I used my fancy electrical disconnect pliers to get in there There is also one clip for the wiring, unlike at the rear I could not get behind it so just had to lever it up and out.....not in great condition to re-use in future.
    • Onto the rear lower shock mount. It's worth starting with a decent degrease to remove 10+ years of road grime, and perhaps also spray a penetrating oil on the shock lower nut. Don't forget to include the shock wiring and plug in the clean.... Deal with the wiring first; you need to release 2 clips where the wiring goes into the bracket (use long nose pliers behind the bracket to compress the clip so you can reuse it), and the rubber mount slides out, then release the plug.  I found it very hard to unplug, from underneath you can compress the tab with a screwdriver or similar, and gently but firmly pull the plug out of the socket (regular pliers may help but don't put too much pressure on the plastic. The lower mount is straightforward, 17mm nut and you can pull the shock out. As I wasn't putting a standard shock back in, I gave the car side wiring socket a generous gob of dialectric grease to keep crap out in the future. Putting the new shock in is straightforward, feed it into at least 1 of the bolt holes at the top and reach around to put a nut on it to hold it up. Then put on the other 2 top nuts loosely and put the shock onto the lower mounting bolt (you may need to lift the hub a little if the new shock is shorter). Tighten the lower nut and 3 upper nuts and you are done. In my case the BC Racing shocks came assembled for the fronts, but the rears needed to re-use the factory strut tops. For that you need spring compressors to take the pressure off the top nut (they are compressed enough when the spring can move between the top and bottom spring seats. Then a 17mm ring spanner to undo the nut while using an 8mm open spanner to stop the shaft turning (or, if you are really lucky you might get it off with a rattle gun).
    • You will now be able to lift the parcel shelf trim enough to get to the shock cover bolts; if you need to full remove the parcel shelf trim for some reason you also remove the escutcheons around the rear seat release and you will have to unplug the high stop light wiring from the boot. Next up is removal of the bracket; 6 nuts and a bolt Good news, you've finally got to the strut top! Remove the dust cover and the 3 shock mount nuts (perhaps leave 1 on lightly for now....) Same on the other side, but easier now you've done it all before
