Hey guys, got defected last night after a dinner with family in seven hills/prospect hwy, had some kind of operation last night hwy patrols up and down doing laps, anyways got done for bald tyres, loud exhaust, pod, and 60mm off the ground, says i need to get a "pink slip" and only gave me 24hrs to clear it and today is sunday so basically nothings open. is it possible to call up rta/rms to give me a week to sort stuff out? i need to drive the car tomoro to work so im not sure if i should just risk driving to work then calling them when they open tomorrow?

any help would be great,

Thanks

Tam.

yeh i wouldve thought they would give atleast a week being a saturday and sunday the next day but atleast i didnt get any fines, which is good but only a day its like they are testing me, im hoping i can ask them to extend it to 1 or 2 weeks, coz i just need to change exhaust and get stock shocks , whack on my airbox and stock wheels on with tread and im good. still shits me its a sunday and hardly any place is open today.

saw some poor guy and his girlfriend walking down the street while i was getting slapped around and he told me he's walking home coz they red stickered his "charade" only coz of cambered wheels. i felt lucky i could drive home and the 2 cops some how didnt notice the top mount gt3082 sticking out and thinks its only a pod filter and asked me where the turbo is. -_-

After speaking with a few cops the length of time they give will vary from none, to 3 weeks (maximum).

A lot of it comes down to how many idiots have given them lip, and how you speak to them. If you found that after you spoke the copper was a touch more firm/angry in his response you were most likely coming across quite defensive (in a bad way) or aggressive towards them.

Also depends on what you've been booked for in the past.

The popo's were on a cruise. Taken from another thread:

OT, that's a joke, 24 hours to fix?

Seriously

How can they defect cars when they don't even know what bits are what

I had a HWP pull me over and pop my bonnet, he knew exactly what to look for. This is the reason why I didn't go to TopGear. A whole bunch of defects going to one place is bound to be a killing zone for defects.

They didnt seem to be targetting imports at Top Gear, i saw a heap of cars pulled over around the weekend but not one was a modified import.... The cops were mainly directing traffic and were quite polite :)

Of course i was driving a Golf so i was stress free for a change lol

Hey the cops pulled me over yesterday, in my work. and actually were not to bad they said If I be a smart ass they would defect me, so I said I'm not be smart I'm just saying u guys will make me look bad to my boss pulling me up in work and he said shut up then checked my license and let me go. I think it depends what cop you get! And I had a blown out headlight and they let me go. How cool is that?

    • If your current chain of thought is, I'll go somewhere like pick and payless (or equivalent) and causally remove the bit of roof with your BYO grinder then casually weld that into your car... oof. It might sound easy but you will 100% end up with a warped roof. You say you'd prefer some ugly fab work, but I don't know if your prepared for how ugly this will be lol.  I've seen professional welders do similar but easier repairs and still end up with warped panels.  It is reasonable to assume that from your current skill level, you won't be able to do this cut and paste job while keeping flat panels.  Ok, but we are here to learn. This might be the go... jump on car sales, sort by price, buy the cheapest thing with rego and drive it home. This is your new practice vehicle. If you're thinking of doing the cut and paste job, try it on this car. Cut out the panel (hey it's a perfect fit) weld in the panel. See what you think of the results.  Next thing you could try, practice removing the entire roof in one piece by drilling out all the spot welds etc. Have a crack and welding the roof back on.
    • I've never welded but I own a welder and I've always wanted to learn. In fact I had already looked at a 1 day welding course in Sydney.  I'd prefer some ugly metal fab than anything weak.  I'm challenging myself a lot with this car. For so many years I've just paid other people to do things and I've always been keen to learn and get better.
    • Ok, thats a good starting point.  So before we start.... do you mind if the car say isn't a strong as it was before? My first thought is go excavating for rust. You'll be left with a gaping hole, that will be filled with fiberglass. You could make it look factory pretty easily but yeah, if you never crash it will never be an issue right? Before we look at other options, how confident are you welding?
    • Oh this is my 1998 E39 5 series. It's worth more to me than financial value. It's a project car for me to love and work on without fear of f**king up something that has lots of value or that I need to keep running.
    • I'm super realistic here. I love the car and want to keep it but I know it's days of perfect condition are well and truly over. I just want a fix that won't come back.
