Just back from an interstate road trip, and got defected in Victoria because the muffler was 10mm too close to the ground (Highway Patrol initially stopped us because "your number plates have a black background", but then went over the car until he could find something/anything to defect).

I've had my Stagea for 3.5 years, and the coilovers (set to max. height), wheels, and exhaust (HKS 3") were unchanged since import.

To get the clearance to the minimum 100mm, I had the HKS muffler removed, and a hotdog fitted in its place. It's a little noisier from the outside, but now I've got nasty resonant vibrations inside that are making my teeth grate....

Any suggestions ? I suspect I've made a big mistake in doing the "quick fix" and destroying what was a well-tuned system.

You couldn't just get the exhaust hangers reset to bring the exhaust up closer to the underbody? If its only 10mm you should be able to do that without too much fuss.

Yeah, sorry, should have mentioned that that is what the exhaust shop tried first. The hangers were tight as, and really close to the floor. He even tried putting a stand under the muffler, heating the pipe either side, and attempting to add some extra bends, but everything was already really, really tight under there.

Wipe arse with Victorian defect notice and mail back to them?

This is not that different to what Legal Aid Victoria said, "Ignore it, and wait a couple of months until you get a letter from Roads & Maritime NSW".

Don't know about Victoria but in NZ the minimum clearance (without a cert) is 100mm to any solid part of the body or chassis and this excludes things like skirts or exhaust. Have you checked the regs for Victoria?

Hot dogs dont quiet much at all. A small Berkley straight through muffler will flow plenty, and actually quiten down the exhaust. It would fit in either mid or rear position, and they cost less than 100 bucks. Why didn't your exhaust shop just put one of them on ?

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
