Yeah I was skeptical about the diff as well, but not having had any experience with FWDs I thought id give it a go, and boy did it make a difference; like night and day.

The control coilovers are quite soft so the car loved to bake the inside wheel on exits out of tight corners no matter what I did. With a welded diff you are able to use the power to pull the car around the corner, its truly incredible. The fact that its welded doesnt even really affect entry so long as the suspension is set up right with driving style to suit.

I could have fitted an LSD ($1000+ from US) but for the money I dont think I need to try it, and the car is already fast. Welding the diff was worth over 2 seconds at Winton with nothing else done.

Do they weld diffs in Excels too?

So the weekend went good , I had a blast! Got nails hard in the rear. Bloke behind me had no brakes at the end of the straight at Symons plains his left brake nipple wasn't right and this was the end result,post-134876-14409273236901_thumb.jpg

But if bad luck but it's all good I guess that's racing, bring on the next round [emoji106]

That sucks. Id be pretty annoyed if someone did that to my car - thats bad racing imo. And wont be cheap as you cant just unbolt the rear quarter to put another one on!

Each driver has a responsibility to race safely, but obviously staying close to you to try and pick up a position was more important to him and as a result plowed into you.

It is however an entry level category like PC so its no surprise :-(

i know a few people in the pulsar challenge, put up a pic of your car matt!

its interesting that most people opt for N14's due to price and independent rear suspension, but often the top of the field are N15's. bit of tweaking to the beam and they handle well.

and yeah, lots of people saying good things about the welded diffs. Mfactory release a helical diff last year which is around $700usd and the other option is discontinued Nismo which can fetch around $1500 secondhand

anyone here running in Pulsar Challenge?

Apparently you can build one for around $5000 and race meets should set you back around $500 a round. was thinking of splitting the cost with a mate and running the enduros with him.

keen to hear people's experience with them!

Damn... that's actually really cheap. Way, way cheaper than I thought. I need to look into this!

edit: apparently you can bore out the engines and such. that would tend to increase the cost, lol. what % of competitors have done this ? how do they enforce some of the other restrictions on internals?

What? You sure? Very little modification is allowed.

Correct.

Only standard rebuild tolerance is accepted. You can bore 0.6mm out the block.

You can take 0.25mm off the head. But the compression has to be with a specified range.

It's all in the regs.

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.  
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
