Hey guys,

So, I'm just a young web developer with an R33 GTR. My big boss happens to own 5/6 business in the area and one of them happens to do vinyl wrapping. She told them about my car and they offered to wrap my car for free!

Why? Because I live in the whitsundays region and the most cars are 4x4's or soccer mum cars. So my car kinda sticks out, as it should :P

I do have many questions/opinions about vinyl wrapping.

What's a good design?

What's a good colour scheme?

What do you think goes well with what and where? (e.g 2 tone, black top, red bottom)

I am aiming for somewhat minimal design. Kinda like the trueno on Initial D. black on bottom and few stripes.

I'm leaning towards black as primary colour for vinyl. But open to any other outrageous suggestions as I think this will be fun :)

Was also thinking on doing a vinyl like the BMW E3 on NFS most wanted, I think that'll be sick lol!

Here is a pic of my car to get the ball rolling (white)!

wash, wax, clay bar and polish!

Hey R34 Blackbird, If you ever come up to the whitsundays, come check out Killer Signs ( killersigns.net.au) I was gonna get hooked up by my GTR blew up on me so plans fell through unfortunately!

Hadouken, I just did a google search and they look f**kin' sick as. I can understand why you'd go with that lol

I happen to think that QM1 white makes an excellent background/foreground for some contrasting graphics. Carbon offset on white looks amazing. Seems a few of us white GTR's are coming up with similar schemes.

My best advice is to sit down with a few shots in front of your computer and try out a few things. That's how I landed on my graphic sheme.

This is mine. There's also another White R33 GTR here in Sydney owned by Dominic "WAGAN" that is similar.

how different would wrapping a whole car instead of painting it be?? I want a dark metallic blue and was quoted $7200 for a full respray but that included door wells ect would it be worth wrapping in this colour or just getting the respray???

Wrapping is temporary, respray is permanent...

Wrapping would be about a bit less than half that amount, but its a temp but also a protection layer and you have a huge choice of colours, metallics, chromes, matts and satins.

Respray os a typical respray and if its good and cared for could last a lifetime...

Not going to make the decision for you though. If your in sydney give smog carwraps a contact

No different, when i had graphics on my car which i designed and installed i aas always asked "who painted those on, people had to find the edges to get the surprise, checkout smog on facebook, they have done heaps of luxury cars, and the results are perfect

Plasti Dip is good for badges, it's usefulness ends there.
Even the best of jobs are ok at best, try removing the stuff, because it comes out of an aerosol it ends up everywhere.

Here's a gtr we fully wrapped in black chrome a few months ago, did a photoshoot yesterday.

two things here.

1- a full proper respray is over 10k. under that and the rub back or other processes are being skimped on and longevity or quality is likely to be affected. E.g. popping out all lights and windows and skirts etc etc.

2- I have heard from a reputable source that in reality you cannot properly remove the wrap from a 'properly wrapped' car without doing damage to the paintwork underneath. And in that essence it would be more of a rejuvenating/covering measure to poor paintwork that a protector of good paintwork...

Number 2 is completely false.

If the paint is in good factory condition, there should be no damage to the paint work, issues arise when vehicle owners don't tell wrappers (or don't know) that they've had panel/paint work done and the preparation has been dodgy in which case paint can be removed when removing the vinyl.

Factory vehicle paint shoud grip the surface of the vehicle at somewhere between 10-13kg/cm2 if i'm not mistaken (correct me if im wrong here), Most vinyl adhesives have a grip strength of about 3kg/cm2.

If you are damaging/removing paint, you're doing something wrong or there was something wrong with the paint to begin with.

Vinyl is NOT designed to be used to cover up crappy paint as if there are any imperfections in the paint, you will see it through the film. It is designed as a long term removable styling option, not a substitue for bad paint.

    • How dare you sell your unreliable Skyline and buy a reliable, Toyota/Yamaha car with a strong gearbox, torsen LSD and Toyota reliability. At least you won't need to worry about oil pumps, big catch can, oil restrictors, blowing off power steering belts, sheering off 3rd gear, failing ABS relays/pumps, etc.
    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
