Long story short..

There was a mix up with the date for my opens...

A 5 month mix up... So now I'm not legally able to drive my R32 gtst until November (open liscence)

So she's in my garage getting started up every couple of days.. Until the battery has fully drained.. (2nd time now grr) still unable to find that problem ANYWAY!

Thought I might get stuck into the corolla and re register it after fixing her up a little after being in the elements for about 3 months

And to my horror

So I was pretty pissed off at this point considering these are 3 of 7 rust spots!

Also the guy who "Repaired" all my rust kept telling me how much he hated "shortcuts" and young guys like me..... Getting ripped off.. Almost as if he was mocking me knowing what he was doing..

I paid $2000 flat for rust gone and some dents/retrimming done.. I was happy with the finished product when I went to pick her up.. All I could see was primer obviously no rust.. Yet,

And that's the last time I had a good look until now.. :(

So not only do I have a couple of problems with the skyline I CAN'T drive but also the corolla I WANT to drive until my open liscence

So what would you do in my situation... Tried selling the rolla.. Went as low as $1500 but still nothing.. Don't think I'd even sell for that..

Current mods are as follows

2.5" straight through exhaust w/extractors

XYZ Racing coilovers

Cream in colour with spots of primer and rust. Sexy!

It was an awesome car to drive and not really keen on cutting and welding new bits and peices onto the rust body..

It also has a 5sp gearbox which ke70's did not come with from factory, I'm pretty sure it would be a T50.. But 3 different places could NOT confirm.

Need new clutch VERY soon and need to know what to get!

This was NOT done by a business, it was a friend of a friend privately done.. So there's my half of the fault I guess...

Thank you all in advance for your opinions and/or crappy jokes about my bomb sticker -_-

So when you take it back to your friend of a friend + read out quotes that he stated to you like, "I hate shortcuts", "Young guys like you get ripped off", "This is a repair!" > What's he going to do about it?

He evidently didn't coat his repair with zinc-aluminum paint. Either that or the pics are of places he didn't touch at all.

If he's in the 'business', will a 'name n shame' even get him off his backside?

Well that's the thing.. This was about 6-7 months ago now, and he does not work at his job anymore. translink.. I do not have his phone number anymore either

I actually went around to his house where I left it to get repaired and there were new owners of the house..

I'm pretty gutted about this seeing as though I thought all the rust was gone :( and now I'm pretty sure my only option is cut and weld.. And I have no intention of giving it to another panal beater..

Who knows how much is in the Freaking chassis!!! :@

The man was a 'friend' of a friend. Where's your friend? Does your friend know where his 'friend' is? Or is the 'friend' not his friend anymore'?

Looks like good money after bad now I'm afraid.

Dammit. Was dreading this..

More of a friend's work friend.

Still good mates with the guy who told me about him.. I don't blame him. But man this sucks..

Well some good news at least... No rust on chassis.. Thank f..

Still need to order a new clutch though...

So close to just ordering the clutch to suit T50 5sp.

Also differential or rear bearings think might need a look at.. Some whining noise pops up at around 30km/h and stays there

I'm going to go out on a ledge here and say that maybe this isn't the fault of the guy who did the work. He may have done what he though was enough to get rid of the rust that was there, but if the rust was penetrating through from the back of the panels then it is very hard to tell just how bad it is. I had a mate who is a panel beater fix some rust for me. He ground it all off and welded in new metal where it needed it. 3 years on and it's back in the same spots, but also around where the work was done. all I can put it down to is that the panels were rusting from the back, which was pretty much impossible to access due to the location.

Not saying it isn't the guys fault, just saying that on an old car like a ke70, there's a good chance that rust is going to occur regardless of how well the work was done.

Yeah, understand.. Just don't know what to do with it now, so hard to sell.

And I'm not going through that again haha

suggest you get the rust repairs done again but after its all painted(not left in primer as its porous and absorbs moisture= re rusting) then get in behind all the panels and spray fish oil in there, if you cant reach it with a pressure pack then buy a litre can of it from auto one and apply it using a $10 weed sprayer from bunnings

this will enable you to get everywhere that a spray can cant, ive done this with a few cars over the years and it works well

Yeah I will do that make sure it's not coming back...

Get yourself an angle grinder with a brush attachment, some stop rust, couple kilos of bog, primer and paint and have a go at it yourself. Just don't cut out any metal and you can't really make it any worse. It would all have to be removed if you get it done professionally anyway.

Otherwise, where are you? People might be able to tell you who to go to in your local area.

It's a pretty shit job. He didn't even take the time to mask up the rubber around the tail light before spraying the primer. Also you can see how shit the actual bog job was in the same pic.

a little to a lot! quotes will vary but $2000 is over the top

Yeah, thought so..

Not keen on spending anymore $$$ on it at this moment.

Looks like I'm giving it a shot. Might even do a quick DIY if anyone's interested or it hasn't been covered 60 times already ha

^^ yeah give it a go yourself, to do a good job you will to remove a lot of the trim/fuel flap/tail lights etc to rid the rust and you may need some fibreglass matting on the back of the panels as i reckon you will end up with holes in some panels

    • @Haggerty this is your red flag. In MAP based ECU's the Manifold pressure X RPM calculation is how the engine knows it is actually...running/going through ANY load. You are confusing the term 'base map' with your base VE/Fuel table. When most people say 'base map' they mean the stock entire tune shipped with the ECU, hopefully aimed at a specific car/setup to use as a base for beginning to tune your specific car. Haltech has a lot of documentation (or at least they used to, I expect it to be better now). Read it voraciously.
    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation.
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
