Hey everyone, I am on my p's and my 93' r33 is my daily, with 150k and climbing on the clock with leaks and ticking from the motor I have been thinking about sourcing my self a rb25de neo with lesser k's so I am seeking advice from you guys, worth doing? Straight fit? Will it allow me to use same diff gear box, and if that is all good would it be better to grab a after market ecu or stock r34 ecu? Note I know my car is not worth spending big bucks on and I do have the plans to upgrade to a turbo model, any advice or tips I'd appreciated

Thanks for the advice guys, thought about dropping in a DET but how will my brakes handle it? In a sense to do it proper and safe my brakes will have to be upgraded right? And running gear? Even tho I will have to leave the motor stock to not to attract to much attention right?

You're on your P's, so forget about turbos.

Where is it leaking oil from? Ticking sounds like oil is too thin. Not sure if it got worse or you bought it like that. Try thicker oil.

Wait until you're off your P's then buy a turbo one (or sell your car and get an R34).

I wouldn't drop in a DET due to the cost factor and all the bullshit that goes along with it (mod plates ect) and after reading on here and how so many people say not worth spending money as you can't get any real gains, plus I'm not made of money lol, my only goal for this car is to keep it clean and respectable (best I can for a non turbo) and learn how it handles and get a better under standing of the RB'S and if I learn how to use what power my car does have more efficient then I would be pleased

Yeah just keep it serviced regularly, etc. Take it to track days, skid pans etc to learn how your car handles in different situations. Build your driving skills up. Once you get a turbo (after a few years of experience), you will appreciate it more and more importantly, know how to control it a lot better.

i recently put a neo in my 33 after finding out the crank key way was thrashed out. the big costs are as follows: engine, wiring, ecu, clutch.
all up i spend about 3.5k doing my conversion and its still not running right. before you go throwing anything in your engine bay do the water pump and timing belt, so much easier when its out. the engine goes straigt in using the r33 engine mounts, n/a 33s run the rb20 box which bolts straight up and you just use the 33 rb20 clutch kit (excedy). next you need to get it all wired up. buy a 34 engine harness and keep your 33 one. take them to a decent sparky or get them to come to yours like i did and they can wire it all up in a day. thread loom into engine bay and then connect everything up. hook up the ecu and then your down to the smaller problems.

problems i ran into:

need to get a custom accelerator cable made up as the 33 one is too short and i belive the 34 one is too long. mine cost 130 bucks.
next problem was for some reason my neo runs the 33 CAS. you need to find out which one you need.

the vaccuum hose that runs between the plennum and the brake booster needs a bit of man handling due to the 33 one not being in the same place as the 34 but with a bit of a shove itll work.
finally dont let any of your mates that have no clue about engines help out. left one mate the job of doing the radiator hoses. didnt bother checking them cause i thought he could do a good job. 10 mins on the first drive the bottom hose came off.

in conclusion its a shit tonne of work but it is nice rocking up to car meets and when people say 'ahh dw bout it its just a boring old rb25de' you can always pop the hood and show them what you did in your driveway with limited help and knowledge.

no neos run the alloy type 33 CAS,(some late 33s had the plastic cap neo type) i have done a neo de swap because it was lying around using early ecu, ran perfectly, not saying it's ideal but does work, and not worth it unless your car is dead & you've got a free neo

For those who are slightly interested haha, mechanic couldn't find anything too major wrong other then coil packs are there way out and my power steering pump has a "slight" leak and tie end bushes need replacing and front rotas need replacing ( as he's not willing to machine them) overall I'm fairly pleased with it and gives me a good start point to start fixing things

    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
