So I think ive watched every RB video on youtube haha. There is a very specific sound that I would like to get from my rb25 but I cant seem to pinpoint exactly what brings out this sound from these engines. It might sound crazy but the sound of these engines was one of the primary reasons for my choosing it over a JZ engine for my swap, so I want to get the exact sound from it that I like. Its hard to get much tech info from any sources here in the states so I figured you guys would be the best to ask. As far as I can tell from videos it doesnt really matter if its an rb26, rb25, rb30, or rb25neo, they all sound pretty much the same given the same setup.

Here are a couple standard sounding RBs, im sure you all know what an RB sounds like but I guess ill put these here to kind of set a baseline. Just your average RB sound

I really like this one, but not quite the sound im talking about

This one is getting closer but still not there

And here is the sound im trying to achieve, its kind of a crunchy screaming wail and higher pitch than the previous videos.

Does anybody know what these cars might have in common in the engine/exhaust that give them this sound? They seem to be straight pipe but I dont think this is the main thing that gives the sound.

Thanks

See at first I thought it had something to do with a larger than normal exhaust (straight pipe of course), like running a 3.5" instead of 3". But ive watched some videos of cars with 3.5" and even 4" that dont seem to get this sound.

I have a twin scroll tubular manifold waiting to go on, and ill be running a borg warner s366.

Did you watch the videos? Its definitely not the wastegate(s), I had planned to do atmospheric dumps on my wastegates but I know that wont get me the particular sound im after. There is a distinct difference between the first set of videos and the second.

Im sure this post/thread comes off as ricey but I know what im doing and the exhaust sound is important to me. I really dont want to spend a ton of money and time fabricating/re-fabricating parts to get the sound im after. I was hoping someone who has been around a lot of RB cars would be able to identify and give some experience based input to what kind of setups produce this particular exhaust sound. There arent any other RB cars in my area, and really not a lot in the USA compared to other countries. Its hard to track down information that I would usually be able to collect by just going to the dragstrip and asking people about their setups.

It's not ricey, but it is pretty stupid.

You've chosen your turbo and manifold. You want to run straight through exhaust. But you want to make your car sound like those? Well, does that mean your willing to change turbos, manifolds, wastegate size for the sound?

If so, then spend your time emailing the people who own the cars in the vids and ask their setup, instead of playing guessing games on a forum.

If not, put your flaming car together with a 3.5 inch exhaust, fabrication which means you can either plumb back or vent to atmosphere the wastegates. Then go drive it!

Two other points.

You're placing all of your faith in sound shot off camera phones and goPros. Ever listened back to a recording off one of those and thought it sounded exactly like the real thing?

Also, RBs sound completely different. A 26 doesn't sound like a 25, which doesn't sound like a 30.

I wouldnt say its stupid, why cant I have the sound that I love so much? The sound of these engines really is one of the primary reasons im staying with it. I could easily swap it out for a 2JZ and spend a ton less money making big power. I want to run a straight through exhaust because I think that is something all these cars have in common, normally I would prefer a resonator at least. I like a loud exhaust but im not one to try and have an insanely loud exhaust. I am willing to change turbos (within my power goals) and fabricate another turbo manifold if I knew exactly what features contributed to the sound I am trying to acheive. I have also tried contacting the people with these cars but no success, asking here was a last ditch effort because I figured the guys on here have been around a lot of RBs and might be able to easily give some info on the subject.

I can see your point but the sound I am hearing is so distinct that I know its not just a microphone/speaker inaccurately re-producing it. I have heard this exhaust note from all three platforms you mentioned so I know its not tied to the displacement base.

Thanks for the link, I couldnt find in the thread but do you know what exhaust manifold he is running. And is that car straight pipe?

Like this?

Get one of these:

Yes thats it, do you mean one of those manifolds in particular or a tubular manifold in general?

I have this one right now but id be willing to fab up one with a different design if that has something to do with it.

Here man, this skyline sounds really similar to the sound your looking for. Imo, i reckon this sound sounds much better then the one your looking for, sounds exactly like the r34 gtr from 2 fast 2 furious. In the vid description he posts down exactly what hes done to the car to get that sound. So you could potentially go for this sound, maybe it could help you with the sound your looking for.

But yeah, i reckon go for this sound man, it sounds so epic, i wish i could get my r33 to sound like this.

It sounds good but id say thats more of the standard RB sound, really just playing with mufflers to get the exact note you want.

I think niZmO_Man is on to something, those manifolds looked kind of like 6boost so I started youtubing 6boost mani cars and they all seem to have the sound I want. Im thinking that the runner length and arrangement of the 6boost manifold might be whats getting this sound. Thanks for your response niZmO_Man :)

The manifolds I posted are R31 GTS-R style. R31House make new ones.

IMO, that's what you want. The long runners gives it that awesome sound up in the rev range.

The 6boost is similar. They make high mount and low mount I believe. There is a company in NZ that does a high mount, Sinco I think it is. The one you have is a Full Race manifold?

Ok I think that has it pretty much solved. Thanks a ton for the help niZmO_Man :)

The manifold I have right now is an AFI Turbo, its very similar to the full-race. It will probably be up for sale soon haha, ill probably buy a sinco unless its a pain to ship from NZ in which case ill just build one based on 6boost/sinco design.

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
    • Perhaps the answer is... more jacks!* *proper jacks must be used.
    • I NEVER think about using a scissor jack unless there is absolutely no other alternative. f**king things are dangerous, annoying and stupid.
