tuner told you to change *what*? as it was running rich? dont tell me the tuner did a *over the phone* touch up of fuel mapping when you yourself have no idea. sounds pretty irresponsible, especially via the hand controller. sounds more like you accidentally wiped it..

did tuner have you play with the air flow meter options? sure its not on z32's or some other afm?

Hi Dave

The car was stuffed, would not idle for long, sounded like rattling a can of nuts and bolts at idle and when I tried the boost it was crap,BUT at about 1400 revs to 4k ish it sounded fine, I am stuck in the bush on a shitty Rd so I mothered it home under 3k

He sent the hand controller to me and we went to the settings using Face Time, he was in control of the situation, he could SEE everything and guided me through it, not rocket science when you have the tuner guiding you, he saw that the ECU had gone back to original/factory settings.

The car was running very rich, so we changed the settings to fix it and a couple of other settings, then I took it to my mechanic to check the motor was OK and change the plugs, they were BLACK.

I do not know if the changes will stay there and not keen on it going pop again on the way to Sydney, so he has offered to load his loaner ECU with my tune and send it to me to get me back to Sydney.

I may be wrong but I think he did everything he could from 350Klms away to help me out of a bad situation and professionally ..

This does not mean I am happy that the FN thing went pop after 300Klms after just having work done including a NEW Tune:(

Have you checked for boost leaks/popped cooler hoses?

You really should...

And I am 10000000percent sure you don't need a motec!

There are plenty of ecu options. Look for one that is plug, eg link or vipec yo name a couple,

To be honest I do not know what to get, but if I have to change the ECU I want something that if I have a problem in the future I can save the tune and I can reload the tune from a memory stick or whatever, well that is if this sort of thing is available to us mere mortals ??

The tuner was on Face Time with me and we went through everything he wanted to see with the hand commander he sent me before saying what he though had happened and recommended a new unit instead of replacing it with the same 15 + year old Apexi unit and suggested using new tech unit?

interesting.... you could spend a couple of hundred dollars on a fc datalogit so that you can save your tune to a laptop....this is what is available on all the other ecu platforms...however not many of them have this handy dandy hand controller.

Had a very similar experience myself, turned out to be clogged up fuel filter from me starting to use the part ethanol fuels as well as a intermittent fault in one of the MAFs. Stuck a Link g4 and map sensor in it to update the package a bit ( ie removed the powerfc). was sick of MAF issues anyway. Within 3km of filling up with 90-10% ethanol, it was running like a hairy goat. Sometimes things can compound till it brakes the camels back, as in my case where car was very drivable with occasional issues from Maf, but throw in a couple of other factors and it brings it down.

haha, everyone is out for a buck $

When you see this gizmo in action, "The hand commander FC" and someone 100s of Klms away changing what your motor is doing(simple when you know what you are doing) by guiding you through some simple adjustments , cars take on a new look, shit this is space stuff watching and hearing your car sounding different, running like crap to sweet by changing a few settings on a gizmo.

I just wonder when it is time to get new tech into your car, seeing I have a problem, maybe it is as good as time as ever to do it?

But I think I will send the Apexi down to the tuner and have them load the tune again and send it back so I can try and use the car until they can do all the work I want done

The hand controller for PowerFC is mildy convenient. But compared to accessing ANY ECU on a laptop, including PowerFC, it is like using a hammer and chisel compared to a dremel.

Totally agree, when tuning a car copy and paste becomes an essential function lol

There is a lot to learn, bloody cars :)

I have had a lot of cars but with this R34GTR it is the first time I am interested in more than just driving them

There are different ideas of what is the best brand/model# and I understand that price can be a major factor, maybe someone could recommend a package of what I would need , ECU , brand and model# and whatever can be used to make it user friendly, I am not the best with computers but OK once I get my head around most things, sometimes just enough to be dangerous :)

But if I buy something I want it to be able to do everything you need it to do.

ive got at least 1000 tunes saved by their number plate in a database... organised by country / city / ecu.

and i make backups.

What do you do with these, is it just a hobby or useful??

Your best bet, if you are happy with your tuner, is to ask what they recommend and get it from them.

That way you know they are happy and comfortable tuning it.

they said the Haltech, I would like a unit that most tuners would be happy with, if possible?

As I live a long way from Sydney I was hoping to get this last work and tune done in Sydney and hopefully find someone closer.

sent the Apexi to Sydney , the tune was reloaded and sent back to me, put it back in the car and away it went, got me stuffed??

Anyway off to Sydney tomorrow to have the Haltech installed, also a Walbro 460Lph fuel pump and a custom exhaust as mine is very restrictive ,looking forward to see the difference in performance and sound :).

I wonder if they can load the new tune from the Haltech into my Apexi , I would have a back up but I guess this cannot be done as they are different brands :/ ???

    • For DBA, check out their guide table here. https://dba.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Direct_Replacement-Guide-2021.2.pdf   Additionally they have some other guides and info on how to make sure you choose the right pad.
    • Sorry, just assumed that talk of coloured pads meant EBC red/green/yellow/shit stuff. I don't know the DBA pads, but it's a reasonable bet that they will be OK. DBA make good stuff generally. Those 4000 series rotors I linked to are very good. I may well replace the RDA rotors I have with those when required.
    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
