Good Cruise Roads In Se Qld

On my way to work this morning I got hit with some school traffic and decided to find an alternate route, and I found a cracker of a road (even if it is only a short one).

The road was a bit wet this morning from some light showers overnight, and with some multiple surfaces it creates some unexpected surprises.

Please note that this review is taken within legal road limits. I do not encourage 'hooning' or performing illegal acts on public roads. Please respect the road rules at all times and take note of advised speeds (marked in yellow) before making your own judgement.

Protheroe Rd - Forgan Rd, Cashmere (Speed Limit: 80kph)

When heading from Protheroe Road, the first left hander (40kph) is slightly banked and has an open rough asphalt surface. The apex of the corner doesn't have much grip when wet, so be careful not to hit it too quickly. As the road opens you get a nice high speed winding section up to the top of the hill before a set of blind esses (50kph) dropping down a 16% grade. The esses tighten and open up again, but be careful not to tackle too quickly as there is a solid concrete gutter on the outside that's going to make a mess of your rims if you come over the crest with too much speed. As you arrive at the end of the road keep to the inside line - the road narrows over a blind crest with loose gravel on the side of the road.

If you have any good cruise roads please share them. I'll endeavour to keep updating this first post with your favourite roads to make it easy for everyone to find them.

I drive this section of road regularly, it's ok but there are much more fun roads around ;)

Haha, yeh definitely. Wouldn't go out of my way to sight this one, just an alternative to boring ol' Youngs Crossing! Thought it might be a good idea to start sharing these by starting with a nice little one to gauge interest.

Be good to eventually pull a map together of good drives that we can link up. My brothers and father are really into bikes. They have an awesome layout they go cruising on throughout the Sunshine Coast hinterland. I'll try to map it out sometime. It's at least a 90min loop.

The ultimate cruising road would have to my the Mt Lindsey highway through the bellbird ranges, between Rathdowne and the Kyogle turnoff (following road toKyogle isn't bad either). A lot of people take the Lions road instsead, but honestly i think the main road is better.

The road from Kyogle back to the coast isn't a bad drive either, but last i was there the surface was terrible.

Its a long way from anything though.

Thanks Cadmoon, that one looks like a cracker! I'll add it (with a finishing touch from Mount Mee into Dayboro - been on that drive before, it's pretty nice)

Mt Nebo, Mt Glorious, out to Kilcoy then back via Woodford and Mt Mee...

This is the better version of this road, starts at the bottom of Mt Nebo

Cheers. Updated using Google Maps Engine. Anyone using Google Maps on their phone should be able to save it as a GPS route.

Here's a loop I'm going to check out this weekend up in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. If you're ever doing a cruise up that way I highly recommend planning a stop at the Mary Cairncross Cafe, especially on early morning winter drives. They do massive awesome breakfasts, and have a big fireplace burning in the middle of the cafe. Toasty! Been up there a few times when it's been wet and the mist looks amazing. Would make for some good photo ops.

These link open up nicely in Google Maps app, but how to do save the Map.

I'll have to convert the others to a Maps Engine Map, but you should be able to download 'Maps Engine' app for your phone, log in to your Google account and load a saved map, then hit Directions to start navigation.

To create maps for the Maps Engine go to https://www.google.com/maps/myplaces, create a map, then save it.

Let me know if you can save the Mt Nebo route to your own maps, if not I'll have to set the permissions to allow everyone to edit them.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yes, many many goods roads are up out north east of Brisbane. Be careful though as motorbikes, police and trucks can appear so always keep well within the limits and on your side of the road.

    • All the above effort, time, swapping out parts in the dark (i.e. no O2 data). You're literally running in the dark.
    • Looks like both of my cars have pressure switch issues. The R32 GTR has 18 flashes on the ATTESSA controller which is "ETS pressure switch circuit". The 4WD light is intermittent, and often just restarting the car clears it. There is an $300 replacement option https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285675135148?itmmeta=01HXN3YKRGKQ08GRZ5KFKKZWJT&hash=item428390a0ac:g:6CcAAOSwWxBltMEG so if it becomes a permanent issue and I can confirm that the switch is the issue, i have a solution. The NM35 is reporting C1208, and disconnecting the switch causes the 4WD light to go away. Translating from the Japanese shop manual "when the pressure is reduced to 2.6MPa (377 psi) or less: conduction occurs when the pressure increases to 3.8MPa (550 psi) or less: conduction is present. Reference: • Immediately after the E-TS actuator motor stops, the pressure inside the accumulator is high and there is no continuity." Not sure how good the translation is but from what i can deduce this means the switch is normally closed (NC) and as the pressure builds from 0 to 550 psi the switch stays closed, then opens and 550 psi. As the pressure drops from 550 psi to 377 psi the switch stays open then closes again at 377 psi. Is that how these things work? These pressures are a lot higher than the R32 ("control pressure 0-228 psi") but i'm hoping i can find a generic switch (like they've done for the R32) to use as a replacement. Maybe something like https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/355586397452?epid=1676016964&itmmeta=01HXN534AF22ACTG6TGDDQGEQ7&hash=item52ca99d50c:g:mAEAAOSw8ilmBcMh&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8LtWdNlWHgyJ%2F3cbw25S2A1lde3qBi3fJii4T3lQavCz4kpqiD42SmBa4FocMvXCjcxiowHjb8vZ8%2BWxc53BkHv781tkStSnCDaenfGKC3bIp0keK20dfsn9LoPa3TfqaEmAydqqyKobgTdXsGGzsl%2BRjOVGuD8OIpOv%2B0wMl7aUtHg0iJtojbtzA%2BRS8Xfm8Ufjuvz4niwrqglAXFUbkL6J%2FGuHPeeECZhLBBN3iNM1Swl94Fv5zE95YK%2B5O6dxDN1ySNOjdMxkA8yaprbuwRHFQv1nlGh%2FWjekj6EUFR2%2FO4HTsoKtSAkY0Mj1w1uf1w%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6zFjKXtYw but with a lower close pressure, and thread adapter if required. Am i dreaming?
    • That is a dead f**king short of B+ to ground. Scary.
    • 10-15 years ago, the answer would always be buy a good import motor and so many machine shops make.a hash of an engine rebuild, or they think they are some sort of RB magicians and want 40k.      Now as others have stated, you are buying a VERY old used motor. So rebuild is the correct answer.  Just finding a machine shop that will both do a good job and charge you a regular price is now your challenge.
