Its really a no win situation for the basic street car that is in true street trim as there will always be bigger cars that take drag racing serious and want the lower times so mod their street cars accordingly but on the other side of the coin why should those people be penalised for it

Why are you excluding the guys with the basic street cars from racing your weapon of a street car? You can't speak for everyone and suggest that it's a bit of a game unless they have a total weapon. My car is probably never gonna be as fast as the BU5TER but i'll still race you and you know I take it very seriously.

I'm just trying to do my bit for people that might have slower than 10 sec' street cars but who want to race competitively and regularly. Why do you think I took my car to a WSID bracket meet? Entered both Sydney Drag Combat events? Cos I wanna compete.

My response was perfectly in context, mate. You're saying it's no win for basic street cars as they take their drag racing seriously, implying that the basic street car drivers don't. That's just not true.

Oh and the term 'DOT' is an American term that refers to the Department of Transport - which is only relevant in the States....not here!  We are working on the correct terminology, that will be used in the soon to be released rule book.  Needless to say Australia complies with laws set down by the RTA - Road Transport Authority.  If your 'street tyres' don't meet the Australian design standards then they are not deemed legal for use on our roads.

this is a little hypocritcal isnt it..... you are worried about radial tyres not being safe, yet you are then saying that you can race an un-engineered car in this class........ it is after all called a "street class" is it not, and in order to race i feel major mods should be engineered. I am a member of AusRotary and this info has been passed on by one of their members.

I feel if it is going to be a "true" street class then the current RTA laws should be used as a guide and modified from there to keep the class safe. Minor things like ATMO BOV's and after market ECU's would be fine, but un-engineered engine converions and race fuel would obviously be banned. To exclude the Nitto 55R and BFG Drag Radial would, in my eyes, be doing the class an injustice. Tyres like this are a huge success both here and overseas and i think we should try and look at including them in this class. regardless of this.... Tyres should be of a radial type and be factory grooved, cross plys not allowed. Fuel should be limited to PULP with the addition of readily available octane boosters being ok. ie Nulon or Wynns etc. "H" pattern gearboxes to be retained with no sequential or non dowshiftable boxes allowed...

We arent after a super competitive sport but one that lends itself to the beginner of drag racing, one that anybody could join and work their way up through. The current street meets are good but something a little more competitive would be awesome.

We also need to keep the rules simple. Call me dumb i dont care, but after having a flick through the ANDRA rule book it baffled **** out of me... one page that broke out into another 20 just for one class. If the rules are going to be like this i think it will turn a lot of beginners away.

Brett - not everyone has budgets such as your or Andrea's, but what they do have is the want to drag race at a competitive level... thats why its called a street class :cheers::D

I was looking at it from the point of view of a owner with a modded car and my opinion was its very hard for the dead stock car in a street class to race competitevely (heads up) with some of the modded off their tits street cars I've seen at DC and Jamboree, shit its even hard for a modded car to race competitively hahaha

I just think that everyones opinion of street car is so different and all I meant is even though you may race the 8thsins etc at the end of the day the true street cars will never really be competetive unless the rules are made so the highly modded cars aren't allowed to race in that class but then how is that fair aswell, I was trying to look at it from each point of view sorry if it didn't come across like that

No one will answer the question of whats wrong with Sports RWD?? I think if we can answer that question we will find the changes needed to make that class what we'd like, Jason has already posted that the SPORT RWD class is already there for us so rather then talking about a new class we should be talking about a few changes to the current class that will better suit us

I'll start

1. I don't see why we have to keep OEM fuel tank

2. RWD and AWD should be seperated into 2 sub classes of that class ie Sports RWD and Sports AWD

3. If enough interest is shown a Radial tyre section should also be provided

Basically i should think any tyre legal for the street would be classed in the street car division. Us guys not running super soft compounds will not be as competitive, but thats to our disadvantage. I know next time when ordering my rear tyres i will be looking a little further, maybe i should start doing some big burnouts now.

these cars cost a fortune to build and ten g'z sometimes just wont cut it competitivly, nothing can stop a hard tuned street regd car from blazing the quarter with us mild tuned competitors being left in their wake.

Sport rwd class needs revising to get two types of classes inc separatly those with and those without an engineers certificate for engine,drivetrain mods? could come into the criterea.

Or we could all just race together regardless and play like good sports...

I don't see a problem with Sport RWD, having said that the car I'm building up is built to use those rules to their full advantage... something that a few people might have a spaz attack about.

Like anything, don't take the rules as an insult, just be more creative with how you interpret them :cheers:

i had a quick read of the sport RWD class rules and they appear to be pretty good on the whole, but the weights listed for a turbo, ie single power adder, 6cly was around 1450kgs when converted from memory, now this is above what a stock gtst will weight, 32 anyway without any form of lighting (i dont need to aircond or a stereo anymore) so thats ione thing i would look at, around 1200kgs would be more appropriate

Is Sports RWD heads up racing?

I think if you seriously want to make the category appealing , ie plenty of jokers rocking up and competing, you firstly have to make it accessible, and the carrot has to be there for all competitors, that means anyone can win. Which means dial i times.

Seeing a std GTST that pulls a mid 13 leave 1.5 seconds earlier then a worked off its nuts car that is trying to hunt it down at full track, thats exciting, and comes back to the basics, driver and there understanding of their own car, and their ability to drive it.

Then it doesnt matter it they have $135 tonka tuff hard tyres of Nittos, nitrous or a turbo off a light commercial airliner...obviously you would need some rules so that you can throw a blanket over the field...and surely those that build big hp cars must get satisfaction from A) doing the time B) doing it consistantly, which the serious races will always do more consistantly.

anyway ... there my thoughts from someone that has always been reluctant to do drag racing for the above reasons.

dial your own where you push your car as hard as you can and as consistantly as you can.Its realy a test of driver skill.

Then why do bracket racers constantly back off and/or tap the brakes before the traps? DYO is never about pushing your car as hard as you can for those who want to win. Watch the difference between a race and when they decide to drive it out the back door. It can be five tenths different! How is that pushing your car?

Maybe the tyres would be hard to police, but if you require same wheels on front as the back, it would certainly be a bit harder....

Not all cars come with the same tyre sizes front and back stock from the factory though. In fact neither of my cars do.

    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers) Replacement of the Valve body (if you removed it) is the "reverse of assembly". Thread the electrical socket back up through the trans case, hold the valve body up and put in the bolts you removed, with the correct lengths in the correct locations Torque for the bolts in 8Nm only so I hope you have that torque wrench handy (it feels really loose). Plug the output speed sensor back in and clip the wiring into the 2 clips, replace the spring clip on the TCM socket and plug it back into the car loom. For the pan, the workshop manual states the following order: Again, the torque is 8Nm only.
    • One other thing to mention from my car before we reassemble and refill. Per that earlier diagram,   There should be 2x B length (40mm) and 6x C length (54mm). So I had incorrectly removed one extra bolt, which I assume was 40mm, but even so I have 4x B and 5x C.  Either, the factory made an assembly error (very unlikely), or someone had been in there before me. I vote for the latter because the TCM part number doesn't match my build date, I suspect the TCM was changed under warranty. This indeed led to much unbolting, rebolting, checking, measuring and swearing under the car.... In the end I left out 1x B bolt and put in a 54mm M6 bolt I already had to make sure it was all correct
    • A couple of notes about the TCM. Firstly, it is integrated into the valve body. If you need to replace the TCM for any reason you are following the procedure above The seppos say these fail all the time. I haven't seen or heard of one on here or locally, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Finally, Ecutek are now offering tuning for the 7 speed TCM. It is basically like ECU tuning in that you have to buy a license for the computer, and then known parameters can be reset. This is all very new and at the moment they are focussing on more aggressive gear holding in sports or sports+ mode, 2 gear launches for drag racing etc. It doesn't seem to affect shift speed like you can on some transmissions. Importantly for me, by having controllable shift points you can now raise the shift point as well as the ECU rev limit, together allowing it to rev a little higher when that is useful. In manual mode, my car shifts up automatically regardless of what I do which is good (because I don't have to worry about it) but bad (because I can't choose to rev a little higher when convenient).  TCMs can only be tuned from late 2016 onwards, and mine is apparently not one of those although the car build date was August 2016 (presumably a batch of ADM cars were done together, so this will probably be the situation for most ADM cars). No idea about JDM cars, and I'm looking into importing a later model valve body I can swap in. This is the top of my TCM A couple of numbers but no part number. Amayama can't find my specific car but it does say the following for Asia-RHD (interestingly, all out of stock....): So it looks like programable TCM are probably post September 2018 for "Asia RHD". When I read my part number out from Ecutek it was 31705-75X6D which did not match Amayama for my build date (Aug-2016)
