Neil
Wondering if anybody has any experience with running slicks at Hillclimbs. I'm currently using 235/40 x 17 Kuhmo V700's and all my competition are on slicks. Almost all of them are 1/2 my weight and are running soft Avon's. I could just buy a set of Avon the same as them but I'm concerned they won't last more than 3-4 events with the weight of the old girl. Any thoughts people. Cheers Neil. Dale FZ1
Check out Hoosier. Go wider, and go soft/super soft. You want them to grip from dead cold. Heavy tart R33 is going to give the rubber a workout but hard to think it wouldn't last a long time. You are only going hard for what - 60 seconds at a time? m.j.h
Talk to the guys at Gordon Levin re Avons and see what they recommend Everyone uses Avon for a reason as nothing else comes close in terms of grip from cold but you need to be careful with compound selection as they can overheat on hot days If you look after them then no reason they wouldn't last 12 months or more Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/453962-hillclimb-slicks/#findComment-7484052 Share on other sites
Neil
I was going to have a chat to Bill from Gordon Leven up at bathurst next coming weekend but the tyre/rim size I use is not all that common for soft Avons so I'll bet good money he will be trying to sell me whatever he has and I'd also bet they will be old. I could be wrong and talking out of line,,,but from past experience I don't think so. I'm swaying towards Dales idea of Hoosiers or even Goodyears as I have used both on the Radical with great results. I was hoping someone had actually used slicks on a Skyline at hillclimbs for some feedback,,, but looks like I'll be a pioneer. Cheers Boys Neil. m.j.h
Agree with comments re selling what he has Have seen slicks used on a skyline once but they where to hard, not scrubbed in and not cleaned and wrapped before hitting the track. Result was not really any quicker then the semis they were using Id look at Hoosier or hit up http://bmtrracing.com/ and import your own Avons Good luck with it all Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/453962-hillclimb-slicks/#findComment-7484396 Share on other sites
mazman
Doubt they would last, be lucky if you get half a season i reckon. I had kumho v70 hards and they lasted almost a whole season of hillclimbs. I have hankook z221 in medium now and after only 2 hillclimbs and 2 bathurst events ( supersprint and 1/8 flying star ), they dont look the best, hoping they last me the 2 day event at bathurst next week and one supersprint at smsp the week after. A full slick on soft/supersoft compound, i reckon the soop would eat them up lol. This is also on a heavy supra, 265/295 sizes. timmy_89
Just to make sure I'm thinking of the right car Neil, you have the white "track spec" R33 GTST yea? (Apologies, I've been looking at so many builds lately I've started mixing up names and cars lol). I don't know anyone else running full slicks on a Skyline, I definitely don't think you would get a whole hill climb season out of 1 set, but a half season would be doable I think. I'm currently running RS3's up front and an old pair of R888's on my R34 which have been through a couple of events at Bathurst and are barely showing wear from the events, but obviously they are a completely different tyre lol. Off topic, I'll be at Bathurst next week as well as with a mate from the forums who has a R33 (Yeedogga), so come say hi at some point, we are competing both days Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/453962-hillclimb-slicks/#findComment-7485400 Share on other sites

PN-Mad
Neil, I use Michelin S8D slicks on my track 180sx. Much to the consistent whining of some skyline owners. I could straight out say, they aren't going to be any good for hill climb, as they try and kill me for a solid 1-2 laps before I have any confidence. I have found them pretty hard wearing however. They were used thoroughly before I got em, and I've done a couple of events now. You could look for a set of softs any brand, and even treat them with some rubber conditioner if that is a legal option in your regs.
