Howdy y'all looking for some insight on doing a some what of a mild build on the ole rb20. Yeah yeah I know why dont you just go rb25, cuz I dont want to conform to what everyone else does.

Anyways I have 270 8.8mm cams coming from otaku garage for the head. I want to build head, valve springs, lifters, valves, and of course porting as I am going to be running bigger turbo. Preferably a gt3071r.

I am not wanting to do anything to my 40k mile bottom end besides bearings, unless any of you recommend anything.

Any insight and ideas from your knowledge would be greatly appreciated from you wild dream boats from down under that do some crazy shit with RBs

Best regards @JankityJenkins from the states

Hi you crazy wild rebel you. There are some highly strung RB20s around. For your 40 psi screamer you will want a custom exhaust manifold and a huge exhaust to suit. And as I always say its all in the tune so get a Link  Ecu  or such like and find a really good tuner!

Not rebuilding the bottom end on a REALLY OLD engine is not always the right move when you're talking about headwork and big cams. There's no point in talking about porting and big cams unless planning on lots of boost and big revs. Massive boost + cast pistons not always good bedfellows.

270° cams on an RB20 = lag for days, boost from 4500 up to 9000+. I'd be thinking about new rods and/or rod prep, ARP rod bolts, forged pistons. At the least. Probably worth considering the oil pump situation too.

Otherwise, it is fairly common to see RB20s run about 260-270rwkW without much preparation and run for a few years before popping.

  • Thanks 1

It's 2019 and people still talk about GT3071?

Put a GTX3071R Gen 2, twin scroll it's mum, twin gates, proper SINCO manifold.

PRP block brace, PRP coil kit, 100mm Plazmaman Cooler, Plazmaman Plenum, Motec M150, Samsonas, and MCA Golds

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
