If not easy fix like above with the lower cover just being loose or bent, the worst case is another example of the lower timing belt gear and washer sheilds being compressed. When this happens the balancer will indeed touch the cover no matter what as the balancer has moved further inwards. This is usually an RB26 or high revving engine problem though but can still be caused by reusing the timing gear assembly when it should be replaced.

The lower timing gear assembly compressing is precisely why Ross and Nitto developed hardened sheilds / gear that don't compress like the factory stuff.

Use  a long screw drive or something like on and use it a a stethescope and press it on to several different parts of the front covers to determine where the noise is coming from it does sound like some sort of interference of one of the front covers. What condition is your timing belt in hope its not starting to desintergrate as i dont know what condition your engine is in and how many kms it has done for the engine all of a sudden starting to make this noise i would be removing the top cover and inspecting that space and rotating the engine to inspect the belt because if it breaks you will need deep pockets to fix

When was the last time you've actually seen an RB timing belt break ? That said if you don't know the age or condition of the timing belt on your car it should be changed out anyway.

My old 33 did that right before the balancer munched itself and took the engine with it. This relates to too much limiter bashing. :9_innocent: I'd remove the balancer and have a look at your snout. If there's no damage you might be lucky.

Did what, broke a belt or the balancer reducing clearance to cover and hitting issue ?

Regarding breaking balancers I can absolutely relate. I had a stocker balancer destroy itself and take the engine with it too. Wrecked everything - cracked block, cracked crank and damaged pistons.

About 3yrs ago the timing belt shedded on my VK holden RB30/25 reason unknown belt replaced no problems since also have a r33 RB25 and never had any problem with it i mostly answere question in which i have had personal problems with VK i have had for 27 years r33 had for 15 years so i have done a lot of kms with them

If your HB is wobbling at all, its f'ked.  Think about doing a kit job.....if your water pump etc are also 'vintage' then do the whole belt, pump, idler etc at the same time [unless they have only recently been done].

    • I got a quote to restore a set of Volk racing gtc wheels at a wheel restoration shop which involved repainting the centres fixing some small gutter rash and repolishing them and the quote was $2.5k I ended up getting them sandblasted and powdercoated for $240  
    • Nismo 300km/h speedo for R33 gtst in GTR cluster.
    • Has anybody had their wheels refurbished? I reckon it's likely bloody expensive. Even a sand blasting quote for my 17s was 200-300 per wheel! The E39 wheels are basic BMW M Sport (or M Tech at the time.) they have slight rash and some have signs of bad repair in the past on the lips. The main issue is that they've become really off coloured.  I think it will be too much as this is definitely (supposed to be) a budget resto. I've been looking at others for sale but they all have some minor damage and colour issues.  In the end I think I'll just need to sand blast them myself and do a respray.  
    • Trying to figure out which nismo cluster i have. All the ones i see on the internet, the speedo goes up to 320kph and the revs 11k, with the nismo logo being on the rev gauge only. But on my one, the speedo goes up to 300 and says nismo, while the revs only go upto 10k and no nismo logo Dunno how to embed pics into a post so ill attach pic of my cluster and generic google search for reference Is what i have genuine?
