Hi all,

I copped some flack on another thread because of my intention to do an RB conversion to my HR30 Paul Newman.

What are the thoughts on a sort of stock looking 3029cc L Series in my PNV.

All the purists accept that on a power upgrade?????

Grumpy old turd alert.

I'll give you my honest suggestion and that is to set your old shitter on fire. Can't say I own a classic? You don't know what I own you ignorant fool. I'd take a DR30 any day over that. HR30's were built for hitting kerbslike this

HR30 PNE is hardly a shitter its like the brock edition of a commo (sorry to have to use that foul language).

I own a few cars of which one is powered by an RB25DET and the other a modified L28E.. guess which ones more fun to drive? thats right the MR30!! that L series growl and the unadulterated power is insane, who cares if its only a 2 valve, single cam, non cross flow engine? they can still make power and are a very good engine... and i am sure Ghostriders intentions for the 3.1L are not going to be shabby.

Dear oh dear, this thread got off to an angry start! ;)

Ghostrider,in anohter thread didn't you say you had just completed the built of an RB25/30?

If you've finished this engine,I'd say stick to your original plan and use it.Much more cost effective! :) I think it'd have to be more "street friendly" than an angry L too. Although a 3L L's big stroke could bring a T51R on boost nice and early! :D

Your car....it's up to you!

go the rb, but dont modify any original parts....use 2nd hand xmembers to chop, or make new ones, that way you can return it to standard...on the other hand, unless its completely stock at the moment, ie orig motor and brakes and such, it doesnt matter what you do to it cos it is no longer original anyways...

hell i dont know i love the old L series too.....supercharged 3.1 litre Lseries......oh god yes!

To RSX, Turbo of coarse, probably a T04R or the GT35/40 I bought for the RB. The problems I spoke of are currently under control, these alternative medicine guys can be brilliant.

OHR30T, Yes the RB is finished, but thought I might shelve it for a while, as the 3L L Series sounds awesome, just think, No engineers report needed, no cat, just get a blue slip and go, as by chance, it will still be carrying the L20A engine number. Let our RTA & police have fun with that.

What can I say?????

Listen to the masses, you appear to be out numbered in your views.

As you have the numbers covered, we won't know for sure, but as it has WA plates, DID YOU HAVE A BAD DAY AT THE DRIFTING???????

As for HR's on drift, maybe you should look at some of the R33's after they come unglued at the drift meets, even the japs have mishaps occassionally, just look at the videos from HPI Magazine.

For your info, DR, HR & MR Skylines are basically identical and mine has all the new hi tech bits, like coil over suspension, DR front & rear brakes, Cusco LSD, fully adjustable front & rear suspension and IF I choose to build this 3L stroker, I think it might be quicker than your GTS25t, now wouldn't that be embarrassing.

i think b005t would smoke you

you asked for an opinion, now dont cry if its not what you wanted to hear, or where you just after someone to justify a choice you have made?

l series engines are buckets of shit. but hey, do whatever you like.

That's an interesting thought.

On paper, I can produce at least 250rwkw @ 15psi from the L Series motor and my HR weighs just 1100kg. That would mean his R33 would have to have 300rwkw to just equal the same power to weight ratio, not to mention the enormous torque the 3.1 would produce.

You guys think the RB's are the be all and end all of engines, maybe I should just go for it and see how I compare on the dyno, you might be embarrassed as well.

It would be interesting if my "bucket of shit" out performs you eh!!!!!

I have built an RB30/25 DET and think I can equal or better the output with an L series of similar capacity. After all, absolute HP means stuff all if you can't get it to the ground successfully.

A mate has an L28ET running on straight LPG and point to point, he was faster with 145rwkw than he is now with 180, as now wheel spin out of corners is a problem.

the old L series are built tough!!

i know of many that seem to go on forever if looked after.. i have 2 bluebirds with L20B's at home and one has done 350,000+ kms (speedo stopped) and thats my daily driver it still goes really well and doesn't hessitate to start.. my dad even said to me he was surprised it didn't blow any smoke! the other one blew a head gasket due to a broken waterline which ran through the inlet manifold. $30 head gasket and she'll be good!

and my L28 snaps the tacho round quicker than the RB does!

why not go twin turbo blow through mikuni's?? haha has anyone else seen that S14 in japan with the L31 setup like that?

Haha, the "up yours RTA" value alone would make it worth doing! :D

And is it some people don't like old engines,or is it old Skylines? :)

    • Guys since i bought r33 gts25t coupe 1994 automatic a/t(manual swap 350z gearbox)  all i got is problems, always problems. Lets start with that when i turn key into ignition(ON) fuel pump doesnt always works. Sometimes i have to turn key twice Off/on/off/on until it primes. Its new, dw300 - 340lph. My gearbox broke so i did gearbox swap, install different intake manifold, injectors and i take pipes. Car was sitting in garage for more than half a year. I did assembly all not that long ago and when i turn ignition cant hear prime. All of sudden it stopped working. Theres many videos on YouTube how to make relay mod on r33 straight from battery so i did and it doesnt work! 😰 30 - battery positive  87 - positive from fuel pump to relay 85, 86 - one of two wires from original fuel pump wires(light blue, grey) and it didn’t work. so I check on ignition and took original BLUE relays wires from trunk, next to fuses. (I believe it’s IGN+ and ECU pin 18. it didn’t work…  tried connecting (IGN+ from og relay) and (ECU 104 from 1of4 FPCM wires) to my new relay 85/86 and it didn’t work.  I unplug FPCM. Didn’t work. im thinking what’s wrong   fuel pump is working, if I leave IGN+ on 85 and 86 straight to ground it works but it’s just nonstop. Since it getting constant 12v after key in ON. light blue wire gives me 6-8v.  so how this should be connected? What causing ECU not giving — on pin? Or I did sth wrong and that’s why it doesn’t work? I need negative signal on ECU that control fuel pump. What this should be?
    • You can use your VIN to look up the factory part number somewhere like amayama, and then look to order new if necessary. https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/nissan Depending on price you might want to rebuild instead. @GTSBoy I had an interesting insight into US market parts when the Titan rear calipers were sticking. New calipers were dirt cheap, about 20% more than a rebuild kit....they are just considered throw away maintenance items
    • Funny, but really not funny. Thank god (most) f the world has moved on since then
    • Lots of votes for driving onto a plank first; that is the quickest way I've found, 25mm is enough for my case but that will vary by car It also depends where you are going for. On the 32 I can get to the rear diff with my floor jack if I do that end first, and get it up on stands. Then I lift the front from either front tow hook as high as needed, also onto stands. Sometimes I need a small lift on the other tow hook to get it level enough If I do the front first I can't get to the rear diff because of the angle of the car Other options are getting to the front mount of the rear subframe from in front of the wheel (if only lifting one side, or just do both which is a bit of a pain compared to one lift from the diff), or also the gearbox cross member mount on the driver's side if you are  just trying to lift the driver's side. I This is the jack I use; it says 75mm clearance but of course that is only on the lower section so if you have to reach too far in like the diff you still get stuck. https://www.snapon-bluepoint.com.sg/category/Floor-Jacks/product/Floor-Jack,-2-Ton-Low-Profile
