sewid
Spoke to NYK Line (shipping company), ship is due in Melbourne next Monday (4/10), but also spoke with my customs agent who reckons shipping estimates are more often than not optimistic. Oh well, should still be here next week My NYK ship was due to dock on the 25/9 and it docked this morning instead - 27/9. 1 or 2 extra days aint too bad. Car going thru customs/quarantine now. sewid
don't say that.would we be covered if something like that happened though????? No. Unless you're shipping with Kiwi line or took out insurance yourself. In fact if the boat sinks there is a good chance you will be up for more money since you may have to pay a portion of the salvage costs. Dont worry though. Boats are pretty safe. Beer Baron
Sewid is right. If the boat sinks, anything of yours they recover will be held until you pay your portion of the salvage costs. It's called General Average and of the specialist car carriers Kiwi is the only one I have come across that includes General Average insurance in it's price. sewid
so once your car is docked likeyours is and is going through customs and quarantine how long until you are allowed to actually take possesion of your car? I'll let you know - I have a problem though - I am waiting for my original B/L to arrive. You need this to be mailed from your supplier before the car can be released from the dock. My supplier did not mail it until Monday so that will cause me delay of a couple of days probably. My car has actually completed customs and quarantine. It did so in 2 days - I could pick it up today if the B/L was here. lwells
You are best off checking what forms of payment your customs agent accepts. Cash or credit car will be fastest.. LW. SteveL
My car has actually completed customs and quarantine. It did so in 2 days - I could pick it up today if the B/L was here. yeh I'm still waiting for my B/L as well, boat supposedly here on Monday. Must admit getting a tad concerned.....don't want to end up paying storage costs. I've been told by my customs agent that the likely delay to getting hold of the car will be if it requires steam cleaning (AQIS). If that isn't needed then might be as little as one day, but the bad news is that 95% of cars that come in require it...... Mr R32 M-Spec
so me being the first time about importing, are we talking about paying the person who imported the car? or the government fees and stuff. I have paid jspec in full the Car has been paid for in full I think the only things I have owing when it arrives is the government/ customs charges? maybe shipping. totals around 5K left to pay do u get a bill when the car arrives or something? Mr R32 M-Spec
so you have to pay for the steam cleaning, and you have to pay storage fees? damn government. I was going to hire a steam cleaner for a week and do the entire car myself when it gets here Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/51288-your-car-coming-into-oz/page/3/#findComment-1030040 Share on other sites
SteveL
I think someone else provided a list of the fees. Anyway, if you are using a customs agent they will provide you with an itemised invoice to pay in one lump, but if your not I assume you'd have to pay each item as they are demanded. The major items will be: shipping costs - worked out from the B/L (converted from $US) import duty - 15% of the FOB cost (converted to $A) GST 10% of the above added together In my case the above comes to roughly $4500 On top of that you'll have: customs agent fee (if your using one) port fees customs fees (clearance, etc) AQIS fees (clearance, steam cleaning) storage if necessary (basically first 3 days after arrival are free) and probably others, which could end up being another $1000 or so. I allowed $6K to cover all the above. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/51288-your-car-coming-into-oz/page/3/#findComment-1030056 Share on other sites
Mr R32 M-Spec
I am going through jspec for the car, I;m assuming the customs agent is different. who would you use in sydney? I don't want to waste time so they might be easier to use J-spec is the broker, they help you get the car in Japan and onto the boat. Customs agent does all the leg work getting the car through customs/AQIS (for a fee, of course). I assume they pay everything but you re-imburse them the full amount before being allowed to pick-up the car. My broker (Prestige) advised me of a customs agent in Melbourne to go through. Prestige gave me that info way back in April. I'd suggest you get in touch with j-spec and ask their advice, they'll undoubtedly have someone in Sydney for you to talk to.
