Guys, a few questions for the learned:

1/. Turbo slowly gets noisier and noisier, then all of a sudden HEAPS of oil smoke out exhaust......stuffed turbo oil seals, right?

2/. A good (and cheap) water cooled turbo upgrade for an L20ET, I'd get a ??? of a ??? (more interested in reliability than performance upgrade)

3/. How hard is it to get the turbo off an L20ET?

4/. L20ET + L28D crank and ??? rods/(standard pistons?) = L??ET (how many cc's and how hard to do)

5/. Does anyone have a central locking motor from an R30? - Long story, you don't won't to know.

Not urgent, car off road for 5 months, but any responses would be appreciated.

ok for starters you have a dead turbo there, a replacement turbo would be something like a ball bearing rb20, your turbo on the l20et should be oil feed as theres a oil line running from the oil sump to the turbo, i had a bitch of a time trying to get the turbo and manifold off my old l20, ended up just getting it all taken away?? i think each door has its own motor in the r30, a wrecker with a MR or HR should be able to get a motor for you, i've got a centre control unit waiting to get the motors for the hr30...

1. More than oil seal me thinks!

2. I'm sure the L20's had T3's stock,so I'd go a T3 style turbo....maybe an RB25 BB (R33 Skyline) ,or an older stlye water cooler T3...

3. How handy are you with the spanners? It's not real hard...

4.???? Ghostrider would be the man for that one

5. As RSX said....or buy a Jaycar central locking kit for $40 and use a solinoid from that.

RB20DET turbo bolts straight up. Need to manufacture the water lines though.

Actually, I've got one here, off a red-top RB20DET, that you can have for about $50. Needs a wastegate actuator, though.

Yeah, originally after discussing the problem (driver's door lock stuffed) with the guys at Jaycar, they sold me a "remote locking/alarm" kit, which (unfortunately) didn't come with any solenoids, I guess Jaycar might sell me a spare solenoid (considering the kit they sold me doesn't work to my satisfaction). Geez I reckon changing turbos on the last model 300ZX would have to be easier than changing the turbo on an L20ET; what an absolute BITCH of a set-up.

L20ET update: Its Not Impossible! Managed to finally get turbo off engine. For those interested; this is how I did it. 1/. remove all attachments to intake manifold that prevent access to retaining bolts. 2/. Remove all shit you can from around exhaust manifold and turbo and undo exhaust system at end of dump pipe. 3/. Undo and remove all manifold retaining bolts. 4/. Remove intake manifold, remove exhaust manifold. Getting turbo off exhaust manifold is a piece of piss once removed from engine bay. Four 17mm retaining nuts with captive washers (bend away with small screwdriver)

Sounds easy? Its NOT! To get the bolts holding manifolds on underneath them you need small, a good quality 12mm socket, long extension (at least 15cm long), universal joint and ratchet. (Sydechrome - thanks Dad!) and smallish hands (I could JUST squeeze one hand in to feel location of bolt heads).

Door locking motor: Jaycar does one for $10, will fit today.

Thanks for feedback guys, I hope someone finds this interesting/useful.

if you have central locking theres little motors that pull down the locks?? when you push down the main door lock....

Push down the main door lock???????

What's this that you do???? My central locking works when I push the button of the remote!

Anyways, doesn't the stock MR30 Ti central locking work off the key?????

4/. That's right, I probly be the man for this. Don't waste your time with the L20A engine block, it might be the same physical size as any other L series 6 cylinder, but you cant put a 10.0 mm over bore down it, the cylinders get a bit airy!

If your going to do the stroker deal, you need a bigger block and not ZED blocks as their sumps and oil pick ups are all in the wrong place for R30's, and the LD28 crank is only comp[atible with another L28 block without a fair amount of machining.

Do lots of homework on the subject before you embark on it, as it is super expensive and more so if you **** it up. It is not the sort of engine build you can do and cut corners, it's either all or nothing and then it has to be THE VERY BEST of ALL, not what you can afford.

I have got all the bits, but i'm not going ahead with the build until another day, the easiest way is build a stock L24E into a turbo using maybe the L26 crank and find some pistons, the L20ET manifolds all bolt on.

A TURBO! An T03 off an FJ20DET is identical in every way to the L20ET turbo with one very important change, the turbine housing is nearly twice the size, from .46 to .87 A/R which should make it spool up faster and produce more power. The FJ T03 mounts to the stock manifold, just like the old one (L20ET)

Thanks Ghostrider, sounds like the easiest power upgrade is to wind up the boost a little! Going with that turbo off the RB20DET (cheers BlindElk) be back on the road early 2005.

Unless your going all the way to 3090cc, the stroker isn't really the go and to have a strong 3090, the F54 280ZX Turbo block should be used, in conjuction with a P90 head.

At the end of the day, some extra boost is the answer in a lot of cases.

Hey there Ghostrider, how goes the Newman & RMR?

The L24 will rev harder, but the L28 will pull stronger. My L28ET 240Z will make 15psi at 2000rpm. The stock NA compression is influencing that but it pulls like a truck.

It is not too hard to produce 400HP+ out of a mildly prepped L6. My under-construction TT F54/P90 engine is aiming for 450HP, but SKY-084 here in SA has over 180kW at the wheels with an LPG-only L'27' setup (including locked dizzy).

  • 4 weeks later...

i've also been told that the turbo off a VG30 (single) will bolt up as well and being a newer model should work as good if not better than the FJ, but remember it's off a 3lt, maybe use the L24 block(for under 2500cc comp events) and might work ok! also what intercooler should be used in a r30? not much room and not wanting to cut up front bar(orig HR30,diffrnt to local)

put up extra photos of enginebay pls look!

    • Biggest thing is you're okay!   It sounds like between the accident, and the drive home, it was a pretty torturous trip again! On the bright side, you took the opportunity to enjoy the event more from the perspective of a spectator, than as an entrant!   Sad to see so much damage to the car. It really has taken a HUGE hit in the front end. If/when you choose to repair, hopefully the rails are straight (At least from shock tower backwards). Hopefully the extra cage coming through there has save most of the chassis rails, and HOPEFULLY saved the motor too. Best of luck when you eventually get motivated to start pulling it down to check it all out
    • Sounds more like what Brad said, that it's mainly transfer. What pad bed in procedure did you use, and did you replace/machine the rotors, or just swap pads?
    • The stutter is almost entirely in the pedal. I don't feel the brakes release and reapply as you would with ABS engaging but the pedal feels that way, without the brakes releasing. It only lasts for less than a second and the pedal is fine again. It's hard to explain, sorry.  I'll get under this weekend and just double check everything is tight. Fluid is at max where I left it.
    • What bedding in procedure did you use?   When you say stutter, what exactly do you mean? Like it feels like someone letting go of the brakes momentarily and regrabbing them again to get you to stop? Re-reading your post, and that is what it kind of makes me think you're explaining, like theres a little bit of a jolt, likely just as you're reaching a stop. I've only had this issue once. And if its caused by what caused mine, you will want to get the car up on stands again and check it over. Mine was a case of a caliper mounting bolt coming out and letting the caliper rotate on the other remaining bolt and gave play in a wheel as it came to a stop. But not every stop either!
    • Yeop... binned it   This will be a summary will not many pics atm and cbf  Fixed the samsonas - it was totally munched Put a new precision 7675 T4 on with proper split pulse mani Got to Sydney to get to car - drove to canberra to get racecar - drive back to sydney that night Next day all day at Plasmaman putting on new clamps cleaning some things up and adding another large engine oil cooler sitting at the rear above diffuser to keep things cooler Next day - Tuesday - on Dyno - killer wikid awesome pumped out really good numbers - more mid range and on lower boost levels Wednesday - first prac - all day again getting the suspension right - had to borrow front suspension again - out do a lap come in - out do a lap - in - what i had just couldnt handle the load at the more consistent higher speeds - got a lap in at the end of the day that was pretty reasonable  Put it this way that lap wouldve had me in 4th in Pro am for the whole event - with only 700 hp and used tyres Thurs first official prac day - lap out warm up - then entered a hotlap with above setting and 80% effort took corners 1,2,3 and into 4 car felt awesome -  rear came around out of nowhere bang into the wall near front on at whatever 140 kmph Done, over, gone Just one of those how did that happen apparently as all indications show nothing out of the ordinary Got to spend the rest of the time at the event like I hadnt done before - was actually Ok mainly as I had my family and my boy is 9 and got treated like a rockstar Long trip home, lost a trailer wheel in nowhere land, X5 airbag suspension gave up half way across nullabour and rode on bumps stops (its now completely fine) had to do a 19 hr drive day on day 3 as accommodation got screwed up so just had to keep driving till found a town with some Now to reassess - hopefully the motor and other things are OK but yet to be seen too. There is no easy fix there is no i'll just order that part and get it sent - we'll have a talk to people see what can happen and what the go is but at minimum its rebuild from scratch struts forward and alot of time effort and $ should and if I return and if but maybe/ when  I have the cage tied into the front strut towers - if I didnt have that things couldnt been worse you can say its just a front end but if you know what goes into these cars... you'll know what that actually means in reality   Car was very fast. Disappointing we just didnt get to show it Effort doesnt win you races though     Apparently this is motorsport !
