I think a better question is what mods are defectable and what ones aren't. But even then, everything is defectable. Hell, I've heard of people getting defected for the stock BOV.

Thing is though if you're not a smart arse, act sensibly on the road, and treat cops with respect you don't get hassled.

wil..

Laws vary from state to state.

Seeing as you have no location listed in your profile, and most of us aren't psychic, we can't make a call on this.

Try doing a search, or start a thread in your local state section. :)

Look on the Vicroads website www.vicroads.gov.au or whatever, there is a guide.

In summary:

Most mods are illegal:

Non illegal ones sometimes include:

Plumbback BOVs

Intercoolers

POD filters in boxes

(but only 1 intake mod allowed, so pod or cooler)

Wheels only1 inch wider or bigger than stock.

Quiet exhausts.

Gutted cats

Ive thrown an illegal one in above just to test everyones general knowledge.

As Rhett said practically every mod on your car is illegal lol.

Yes your wheels can only be up to 2 inches larger then the stock ones.

POD Filters (without box)

Turbo Timers

Boost Controllers

Auto Start (illegal for manual)

Screamer Pipe

Too much. Lots of things are illegal but its just that the cop wont be bothered checking for everything.

air intake: You are allowed 1 air intake mod, intercooler or pod. since the r32/r33/r34 came with a stock intercooler, then technically you can't fit a pod but i think its only 1 "aftermarket" air intake mod, so a pod is ok but it should be in a box, it varies from cop to cop

Turbo timer: Your engine must not run when the keys are removed from the ignition

Boost Controller: Not allowed is it alters your vehicles emissions

Auto Start: Any gearbox I think, as your engine must not operate without a key in the ignition, this is for safety reasons

Screamer pipe: It vents gases to atmosphere without going through cat first

Plumback BOV: I think these are OK as they recirc "gassed" air back into the system. This "gas" which is basically compressed air has to pass thru the cat before it can't reach atmopshere.

Auto Start: Any gearbox I think, as your engine must not operate without a key in the ignition, this is for safety reasons

That doesnt seem right, ive seen so many car alarms that have the auto start feature built in. Are you saying that they are illegal in alarm systems too?

Basically aftermarket computers, venting BOV's(the ones that make a noise), loud exhausts, High mount non-stock turbos, any form of boost control, non ADR approved items like steering wheel pedels, seats, too dark tint, venting wastegates, running no cat/muffler etc etc the list goes on. However you'd find that most of these mods CAN be engineered in some way or another, although without the fun and cool sounds( ie Psssht, roaring wastegate etc lol)

Ok...

Anything not stock = Potential Defect

Having something not stock, BUT being nice and realistic to a cop = Hmmm you might just get off ok, i have on *low tread tyres & 3" exhaust*.

Having anything non stock AND being smart ass to cop in anyway = Defect.

Watch your mouth and be sensible, or just get an engineers certificate for some greater peace of mind... I simply dont drive in town on Fri or Sat nights when they're pulling up a great deal of cars... Its more sensible to be out blind drunk on a Fri or & Sat night

i have an R33 and live in coffs harbour...i have been defected for everything aftermarket.....it dosnt matter how nice i am.....everytime they see me they pull me over and seem to find something to defect me for..the first time i was pulled over i had to go to sydney and get rta emissions(i was told it was an epa test by the police),otherwise the cops wouldnt pass any of the defects. The only thing wrong with that is there is no pass or fail and they do not list any of the aftermarket parts at the time of testing...so u could go there with the car totally stock and get a really good result...how do the engineer or police know!!! it makes the test irrelevant....Another issue is when i am given a defect notice, to have them cleared i have to go the police station...the first time i had to get a defect cleared the cop refused the engineers certificate....the police are not mechanical engineers and in my opinion they do not have the credentials to even pass defects and refuse engineers reports.....The second time i was pulled over they got me for a boost adjustor and not having my silencer welded in place!!! those parts were on the car the first time they looked at it.. i am currently having a paper war with the epa and rta over these issues as the regulations are not properly defined, but its like hitting my head against a brick wall........If you are ever have to go past coffs harbour and you have a nice import with mods just make it quick....im moving soon and cant wait.....

Thats a bit f***ed r33bdg1rlnsw.... Yeh the previous owner of my car got defected for the exhaust & had to have it passed by the EPA, so he put the exhaust back to stock, removing BOV & POD, passed it, then put all the mods back on... Just a big f*** around of time and money. I chose to get rid of the huge tailpipe i had and got a Megaflow twin tip muffler as the replacement *have 3" Exhaust*. They arnt loud at low revs & give a really nice tuned sound at high RPM. It seems a cop will judge a car by its tailpipe with every1 with a modded car having single big barrel mufflers.

since when do you clear a defect at a cop station? You clear a defect at a vicroads office which is a piece of piss as you just hand them the roadworth certificate.

A cop refusing an engineers certificate is like you telling a judge in court to *** off when they give you a sentance!!

air intake: You are allowed 1 air intake mod, intercooler or pod. since the r32/r33/r34 came with a stock intercooler, then technically you can't fit a pod but i think its only 1 "aftermarket" air intake mod, so a pod is ok but it should be in a box, it varies from cop to cop

This is where it gets tricky.......

If the car leaves the factory with a cooler, then it's not classified as a modification.

If the car is still sporting the stock cooler, then a pod shouldn't be a problem.

However... if the car came stock with a cooler, and you changed it to a bigger/prettier/ricier cooler, then that classes as your 1 intake mod, and you will be defected if you have a pod as well.

..are we all confused yet?

Haha I got hassled coming out of Coffs a couple of years back....30 mins of arguing the legality of things I pointed out that I lived in QLD and had a stock car...and I mean STOCK.

Was let go with a warning of "be more careful next time" WTF?

    • Yeah it is always worth testing and balancing actuators out of the box, just set the pressure regulator on a compressor very low (eg 5 psi) and increase it slowly to see when they both move.....unfortunately while you may be able to adjust the length of the actuator rod to minimise any difference, the actual pressure they move from is not adjustable so you need a well matched pair. And yes, the VCAM is probably contributing; the earlier in the rev range they come on boost and the slower the revs build (I think your demo was in 5th), the more you notice it.  Driving at WOT through 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc you will probably never hear it as any shuffling starts and is over super quickly
    • oh they were with that motor, you need to remove the engine to change the spark plugs (don't have to, but it does make it easier)
    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
