as I said in the other thread chris...

$500 for just the engine... no gearbox, no ecu, no wiring loom... reckon its worth it?

I know how to remap the ECU on the CA18 ECU, which is a bonus, so I can tune the car myself, just need to hire some dyno time off someone. parts for the ca18 turned out to be even cheaper than the 4agze... and more readily available... my favourite wrecker has 3 he dosen't even know how to get rid of.

If its a simple swap that I can do at home (or at skylinegeoff's place :spank:) then I'll do it. I need a list of parts I need and some hints n tips.

Also do you have a service manual for the local sprinter?

let me think of what you'll need........

engine will fit with modified engine mounts onto std front crossmember, can duplicate the engine mounts we have if you need,

G/box fits with modified mount, plus you will have to modify the position of the gear lever hole and the handbrake approx 100mm. this is so the centre console will fit correctly with out looking dodgy or needing any cutting!

the diff will wanna be replaced, simple 4 link but with a 7.5" diff with a custom tailshaft to match the length and changed g/box -- at least 250mm longer /further back from std.

big issue is the std fuel tank with these engines.. they dont like to be lean and the std tank surges an amazing amount.. my mate has gone through 3 pumps already, 1 after installing a surge tank! (the feeder pump shat itself from surging, but protected the engine)

another issue with the tail shafts is that most will be bigger than std, and the wizards at toyota for some reason ran the fuel line up one side of the tunnel over to the other and back again, this can cause rubbing on the lines by the G/box and they meet at a bad spot.. about 5mm clearence then we got engine torque playing with it! .. so these need to be moved out a bit!!!!

the radiator is sufficient if only a small amount of track work, gonna do big sessions and drift .. you want a better radiator -- the ones for VN commodores with custom tanks will fit on slight slant!!

then your front mount goes in, and oil cooler etc... piping can be done a few ways... we are in the process of recreating the piping so i can show you pics once it is done... will be easier than explaining over here! looks the goods ( with custom inlet plenum) :spank:

need a electric fan for radiator, original will not fit, no major structural changed needed really!

any questions? i havent ever posted this much in one go ever lol ;)

i probably forgot things so ask me questions and i'll remember it!!!!

Chirs

so far it sounds a lot easier than my plans for a 4agze engine with a 7afe bottom to make a 1.8L.

will have a stab at it definitely. i'll be putting in a bee-r rev limiter as well after hearing about the nuber of times your ca shat itself at constant high rpms

Buckets of bolts...all of them. :spank:

When AE86s were putting around the local Touring Car scene DR30s with Farmer Fury/Seto were scaring the establishment, didnt they even come in 2nd & 3rd one year atr Bathurst:)

Nah...I suppose they are ok, but i dont see what all the fuss is about, perhaps because i dont really like the styling of them:( Not when DR30s look so tough:thumsbup:

oh yeah, chris, if you want some habib prices on CA18DET manifolds (lowmount and top mount) let me know... there's a guy in the US who's keen on supplying us with a set of stainless steel mandrel bent ones.

roy... its just a lot cheaper and easier to race an AE86... I'm taking baby steps into the world of Wang... and I don't wanna use my R32... i'd rather thrash a $650 AE86, which is still fun to drive, esp if I put a ca18 in it.

besides, all the old datsun boys love the ca18s in their cars... i'm just doin what they'd do :spank:

Yeh no doubt hey can be good things:thumbsup:

They are better then a Scorpion:)

come back from lunch to an uproar LOL :spank:

ummm Duncan .. the Red one never ran semi slicks, just crappy street tyres .. he's a bit cheap that way LOL he got to 1:16:2 i think.. but that will be improved with the addition of adj. swaybars, lower and stiffer shocks, and an extra 3inches or so extra track at the tront with some nice camber angles.. has some push understeer issues atm

$500 is cheaper than we have got them, depends on what you gonna spend on the wiring, g/box and support systems.. they go hard at stock power and can have oil issues.. but if kept and suitable levels and dont go flat stick for 5-10mins in top gear.. you should be ok!!!

Habib prices ??? hmm PM me a price and i'll suggest it!

oh and we are putting an S15 turbo on this one aswell!

yeah it's not hard, but a litle time consuming! we can create the mounts for you easy so you can get em and know the engine will just bolt in!!

well if I was building a cheapy track car these days a s13 or even better r32 gtst would be a much better starting point.

AE86 up to say $2k + how much for one of those 4AGE?

S13 or r32 you could get race only for abouit $5-7k

4age costs about $1000 with loom and ecu

4agze about $1600

4afe bottom for a 1.8L conversion $500

realising that you can just put a CA18DET and get a lot more power... priceless.

rofl FAI approved didn't HIH buy them out then go broke?

or did you mean FIA? :P sounds like a good cage but it won't be CAMS legal for Aus without an inspection and approval, there are a list of homologated designs available

actually just checked the ADR's for Victoria I dont need an engineer to sign it off... as long as the roll cage is desgned in a specific way, it can be fitted to the car with no engineering required. Good news is this one does.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
