my autos only screwed cause i drive the crap out of it, id always intended on getting the conversion but what most of you manual guys are sayin about autos is just rediculas.

i reakon for every three clutches yous would go through id go through a box so stop whaling on autos

mines done 115000kms i think that that is a pretty good effort

I can tell that most of the people that are saying manuals are better have never driven a proper auto. I have a R32 GTST that has a worked auto and can tell you that the control of the car around the twisties is at least equal to a manual. In a straight line nothing comes close. If autos are so easy to drive you have another thing coming put some power through them and youll find out what i mean.

looking at it from a mechanical point of view, an automatic gearbox due to the complexity of its synchro's and gearing shouldn't be able to support powerful applications, let alone violent driving with such power.

Just wanna know how much power the guys claiming auto boxes are gods gift to boy racers are making, and lap times/quarter mile times if you guys have any for comparison with their manual equivalents. Street racing dosen't count for shit btw just like G-tech quarter mile times.

Then why do most (all??) BIG BIG horse powered drag cars (read funny cars, top fule) run a modified auto. I cant think of a more violent application than the type of launch they are put through. (they dont use dog boxes with quick shifters)

My auto works fine with 200rwkw. MV automatics claim it should be good for close to 300 before it needs to be modified. From what I gather that puts the auto box on par with a manual.

I cant post 1/4 mile times yet, but I hope to have the car down the drags latter this summer. (no use attempting a run with tein HA's on the car). Someone on these forums has posted a mid to high 12 second in an auto with a little over 200rwkw.

are u running powerfc byitself ie standard ecu isnt there?

ive been in an auto with pfc and everyone who has tried, all said the same thing.. its annoying to drive unless at full throttle

limited as in less options for aftermarket engine management . no powerfc , no wolf , virtually no plug in ecus will run the auto exactly the same as the stock ecu from what I have been able to accertain .

but if you know anymore information on the subject please share cause I have an auto r33 sedan

theres a rather large thread floating around a few weeks back on auto engine management and that was the general consensus of it also

Sorry to tell you but your Auto and an Auto in a F1 is so different it's not even funny..

If your car had an electrohydraulic gear system that was worth 10x the price of the car.. then yes, maybe I would like to drive that auto.

We are talking about the difference between a factory auto and a factory manual that "Skylines" came out with. As this is SDU..

This does not include a "modified auto" for drag also, as once again.. this is nothing like your stock Nissan auto.. that is going to last 5 minutes with 300rwkw.

Most of us that are discussing this have our cars as daily drivers, do some track work etc. And most of us are using stock Nissan parts..

For all round performance, that lasts and performs.. the manual is best.

Well firstly let me point out that i'm not taking sides here, i have owned both autos and manuals and both have their good points but i have to point out a lot of the complete crap that has been written here. It was mentioned briefly on the first page but wasn't brought up again.

I am assuming there are no engineers posting in this thread, because if there were they would tell you that some energy (and therefore power) is lost at EVERY linkage. Therefore seeing as the auto has more components and therefore more linkages it MUST make less power than a manual with similar mods.

There is no point arguing 'my auto skyline feels faster than my mates manual', you cannot argue with science. It has been proven over hundreds of years.

An auto skyline against a manual skyline with EXACTLY the same mods, the manual will win EVERY time, no arguments, assuming the manual driver can drive. Not wanting to open a can of worms, just pointing out some scientific facts. The reports i've seen estimate the drivetrain losses to be about 20-25% greater in an auto than a manual.

Arkon I'm running a Link in my car and it works a treat... Gears are smooth 1st to 2nd and on all the down changes, you couldn't even tell it was an aftermarket ECU.

However, an ECU is only as good as the tuner, so I’m not sure if there’s anyone in WA that is awesome at it. I had mine fitted at AVO here in Victoria. They recommended them cause that’s what they feel most comfortable tuning, so that’s what i went with.

You say wolf 3d V4 won’t support the auto?? I thought I read somewhere SST was tuning them??

An auto can be quicker because at lower revs the torque converter actually increases the torque, ie more than the engine is putting out.

I found at the drags that up to at least 3/4 track I was in front of far more powerful cars but they stormed home past me for a quicker ET. I put it down partially to the power lost through an auto being at the top end of the spectrum (my opinion only) and also the rev drop between 2nd and 3rd gears being too much.

is your link a wired in or a plug in ? if its plug in its the first 1 I have seen that works . As its a board that goes inside your ecu it might possibly work .

if its wired in then yes it seems they can work , as my post refered to plug in ecus . Essentially it seems that the auto trans needs some inputs from the factory sensors and as long as those are still given to the auto when you wire in your new ecu you may be alright . There have been a few autos running autronics in wa sucessfully .

As for the wolf plug in steve claimed it did work , then when I asked if it operated exactly like the factory ecu he admited it did operate differently. This is what he said :

"Aftermarket ECUs all effect autos but we have had no real problems.

Sensor benders also effect autos if you need to make large changes as the load values etc are substantially altered and do alter the Autos performance.

Worst case we have had is like a mild shift kits been fitted."

The car runs great (well it was until I blew the turbo, hope to pick it up tonight with the new GCG turbo installed and tuned)

As you indicated, but for the benefit of others, my car runs on a PFC (without a std ECU) The improvement in mid range power with the PFC is excellent, and the removal of boost and speed limiters was definitely needed.

The best my car has made to date was just under 200rwkw, but that was a safe tune for day-to-day driving (didn’t want to push it too far). With the new turbo I hope to get around 230, but I am really looking for the improvement across the whole power curve rather than just chase top end power.

For those with Autos I would seriously recommend getting a shift kit installed from MV Automatics in Adelaide. The skyline auto isn’t really a slush box when compared with what Ford or Holden offer, but the improvement with the kit is worth every dollar ($300 installed).

From memory they had to wire the TPS to the auto ECU. The Link also uses a MAP sensor so that had to be wired in, so there was a bit of extra work.

The added bonus thou is as it doesn’t say Apexi on the box it probably works out the same $$ to have one wired in and tuned.

so how come your power fc works perfectly when others struggle with harsh shifts and incorrect gears and kickdowns ? did they do anything when installing ? send anything to the auto ?

    • Thanks for all that information I appreciate it. To answer your questions: - Yep that's what I mean. These guys are professional painters to so I must be missing something. It's a bit hard to explain. - With the primer landing on clearcoat, I make sure that the surrounding clearcoat is scuffed to 240 grit as my epoxy primer says that I only need to sand the area to 240 grit. - Yeah so similar to the first question, assuming that the paint landed on the unscuffed clearcoat because I've seen that happen. - Yep I want to prep the surface in that order. Only reason because epoxy primer will protect it from rust and I need that atm with this crappy Sydney weather. I think I was worried about time, if I try to put the filler down but screw it up somehow and I don't have time to sand it off and reapply it then need to put primer later that it might start to rust again so I wanted to apply the primer as quick as possible to not deal with rust.  - My car has heaps of small dents, that definitely need filler but are you also sanding the area to 240 grit to fill it in with filler? I always thought you have to go to bare metal for filler to stick but that contradicts the point then that you can put filler on epoxy primer.  If you aren't going to bare metal, AND not putting epoxy primer how are you making the dent stick to the paint?
    • I did. I went to a suspension guy and he told me because I don't have adjustable camber arms it's the reason why my car veers towards the left if I take my hands off the wheel but if I drive my other every day car and take my hands off the steering wheel it goes completely straight. I think it's common with Skyline's. In order to fix the problem, I likely need gktech camber arms then nismo bushes since I have poly bushes atm, then a wheel alignment after that. With my car if I take my hands off the steering wheel on a really bumpy road before stopping at a light I have to hold my steering wheel somewhat tight otherwise my car will legit just go completely in the other direction quite quickly and I'll slam into something lol instead of stopping straight. I Believe this YouTuber had the same issue and fixed it with gktech arms. At timestmap 6:05 he talks about how the car doesn't veer anymore after installing these arms.  
    • hello! does anyone have a schematic that shows how to test the blower motor resistor for the vac system? i believe the part# is 27761-15U00. I think the resistor is toast, but would like to be able to test it somehow before i embark on the journey to find a new one. cheers! 27761-15U00
    • I don't know the answer to this, but did you have a look at the parts diagrams on amayama.com and see what they list around it for your car? As an example this should be it on my car. That's how I would check for required clips and things like that. But, I take no responsibility for you ending up with a box full of random OEM hoses, washers and clips after going down that path a few times. This definitely has never happened to me  
    • Most driving should* be done on one side of single lane divided roads. In the RHD world, you drive on the left side of the dividing line and the road is probably cambered equally on both sides. So your side of the road slopes away to the left. The same is true for the LHD world, just everything swapped to the other side and opposite slope. With a perfectly neutral, straight ahead wheel alignment designed to drive straight on a perfectly flat surface (or at least one that is level on the left-right axis, even if it has some slope in the fore-aft axis) you will not be able to drive on a cambered road without the car wanting to drift down the camber. You will need to add steering input in the opposite direction all the time. This is annoying. The solution has always been to set the camber and/or the caster to produce a continuous turning force in the opposite direction of the camber. The car will drive straight on the kind of camber for which it was set up, presumably as described in the top paragraph. But.... when the car is set up this way, as soon as you get into a lane, usually on a multi-lane surface road or highway, where the camber is not as presumed during setup, the car will usually pull to one side. In the RHD world, if you are in the fast lane on a big divided road, you are probably on the opposite camber compared to what the car was set up for (ie, sloping down to the right) and the combination of the setup and that camber will make the car want to go right pretty hard. Even a perfectly flat lane will tend to want to go right. There's no getting around it. Civil engineers who know their stuff (which is not an assumption that can always be made) will attempt to keep the variation in camber across a multi-lane road as small as possible, and if they can will attempt to make the fast lane as close to flat, or even cambered in the same direction as all the other lanes. This takes a lot of planning for drainage, control of levels, ability to deal with the elevation changes that occur at road junctions, etc etc. So it's not trivial to get it right. When they do make it work, then the annoyance is reduced, along with tyre wear, fuel consumption, etc. In theory, the civil engineers are supposed to worry about those aspects of road design also. * This used to be true, but now with very large highway systems, even just multi-lane surface roads running everywhere, it is less true now than it was, but the old assumption is the basis for describing the phenomenon, so let's just run with it for the moment.
