Hi guys I am new on this site so bear with me. I have an R32 GTR which I had the oil changed about 2 weeks ago. I was using Mobil 1 Synthetic, but heard and experienced bad things with this oil (using oil in a new motor) so I have changed to Motul. Since I have had the oil changed I have been experiencing low oil pressure at normal running temps! The motor is reasonably new probably 25000k, the only thing that I can think is that I ran it with low oil for 1 day. The motor is not using any oil, but what worries me is that it sounds more rattly than before! Am I worrying over nothing? Sorry for the long post.

hey,

i have the same problem just happend to me yesterday my oil pressure sometimes was really low and sometimes normal but my temperatures were all normal. I got a bit annoyed hoping it was nothing to do with my oil pump so i checked the oil levels and discovered it was running dangerously low. I couldnt think of were all that oil went as i checked it all a week before and then i remebered when of my coil packs went on me and the car was on 5cylinders for a couple days while i was trying to find a coil pack from wreckers. I discovered that running on the 5 has burnt a lot of oil out and its really dirty when i checked it last night this morning i am heading to go buy some new oil and a complete oil flush i will tell you if that has cured my oil pressure problems.,

Also sorry for the long reply (noob to forums)

Hi mate,

The factory nissan guages are notoriously slow acting and can often give inaccurate readings (senders play up apparently).

My suggestion would be to get a decent aftermarket electronic oil pressure gauge with warning as they are very fast acting and accurate. I had a Trust oil pressure gauge in my old GTS-t and it would move quickly vs the slow moving stock one.

I am also about to replace my GTR 3 DIN gauges with 3 defi gauges for oil pressure, oil temp and water temp.

It previously sat around 3.5-4 now is about 1.5-2 at idle! Is this too low?

No that's fine. You don't need much o/p at idle and as long as the pressure is good at operating revs (engine under load) then there's nothing to worry about.

What Ronin09 says is correct...the factory o/p gauges and senders are heavily damped and (at best) the readings are a guide only. If your still concerned then have your o/p pressure checked using an accurate (ie calibrated) mechanical or electronic gauge.

I use a HKS mechanical guage that screws into my GREX spin on adaptor, and typically in the morning at first start up it will sit between 3 and 4 bar, and Ive since found after driving a small distance my oil pressure will go down to 1 Bar at idle. I now use this as a guide as to when my engine is upto temperature (not following the std water temp guage) as the oil pressure is lower at idle (oil hotter etc). Im using Mobil S 10w40 on an RB20.

If you replace with the DEFI unit 3 din cluster, for a 32 GTR, are they electronic still? as I know a guy who had one put in and it didn't need the control unit like the bigger gauges

I'm just looking at replacing the std GTR cluster with one of these DEFI ones. they look so cool!!!

sorru for the day late reply. Well I have solved the problem (for my car anyway) I drained all of the oil and then threw in some cheaper oil for a couple minutes to clean out anything else that may be floating around. ONce that was done drained it again and placed good new oil in. I noticed my oil to be very dirty and horribly black. Also when I was replacing oild filter it was literally blocked. Replaced oil and filter and for me I got no more intermitting oil pressures. I am all happy for now anyway

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
