Forget about numbers for a moment and get your ass in a GTR then a STi.

The way they both drive is very different. The feed back, the feel of the car in general.

I can't say much for the STi as it's changed a sh*t load from my 94 WRX. But I think there are some things that won't change.

But I can tell you that a GTR is more of a drivers car. Push hard and it will bite back. Drive at 10-10ths and it will bring a bigger smile than a STi.

It's not always about numbers to toss over.

There is simply no sales of Sti in japan, subaru makes their sales because of australia and honk kong... Subaru is not a save car compared to an r34..

the r34 is a much stronger car compared to sti. subaru's gear box and bottom end is as bulletproof as a coke's can...

GET THE GTR....

Who told you that there are no sales of STIs in Japan? When I was in Japan recently, the number of STIs on the road was literally 10 times the number of GTRs.

Also, with regards to the bottom end...RB26s seem to spin big ends much more often than EJ20s do.

I drive my R33 GTR everyday etc... it hits full boost WELL before the 5grand you're talking about, its actually on full boost very close to the 3400rpm you are talking about from the WRX, well before 4000rpm anyway, that and it revs out further than the WRX.. It runs low 12's, maybe a high 11 if someone who could drive took it down the strip, so the only difference between my GTR and the WRX you want is mine will be worth more in a few years  haha naa you do get the warrenty and the new car etc... and i do agree with where you are coming from, WRX would be a better daily driver, but its alot closer to the top end of its performance than my GTR is, yet they will both perform the same functions, and i think my GTR would be quicker on the strip, track and road than the WRX you're talking about.

Sorry champ I was referring to my car. Aftermarket turbos makes it laggy til around 5grand. But yes you are right, the stockers will come on full song around the 4grand mark. But I still believe (as others have said) that the STi (not WRX) is more puchier around the streets and more fun to drive on a DAILY basis. Not the weekend :) We all know how good the GTR is once you start to drive it hard...

Additionally, in regards to the GTR being quicker on the strip, track and the road: I agree. BUT, as Silver Arrows summed up nicely.....it aint all about numbers. Pick the car that you like more to drive.

Both are awesome cars and IMHO it doesn't really matter which car this guy picks; he will have a heap of fun in any of these two cars.

My 2.2c

thanks alot guys for the helpful (and the not so helpful) comments. it was especially helpful to hear from those who have had or still have both cars GTR/WRX. it seems from the comments, and correct me if ive read them wrong, that if i want something that goes hard off the line with minimal lag, then the wrx is the way to go? i just loved the off the line accelleration of the wrx, as theres not many places that you can legally (or at least not get caught doing it)stretch the legs of your car these days, the only way to feel the power under your bonnet is when you go from 0 to the speed limit. if a gtr is only starting to stretch its legs by then, then i supose the fun/fast alternative is the wrx or as some people have mentioned, the evo. dont get me wrong, i will push the car beyond the speed limit if it is safe to do so, but i dont want to wait until 120kms before the car really performs.

once again, thank you for the HELPFUL comments.

You can just as easily loose your licence doing the speed limit (dangerous driving charge for accelerating unnecessarily quickly) as going over, so I wouldn't worry so much about that :D As other have said, take both for a drive (if you can): anything other than your own impressions are rather pointless.

FWIW, you can get an RB26 going lower in the rev range without too much work: cams, exhaust and intake mods, and wise turbo choice will help considerably.

LW.

God damn! I've only replied in the equivilent thread on the wrx forums! Funny the differing opinions from both seperate places!

I won't repeat myself from there but will add a few things (some just for fun).

For those that don't know I own an MY03 Rex and an R34 GTR V Sepc. As far as off the line acceleration goes - the GTR owns the rex in that regard. Now I run a twin plate clutch in the GTR so I kind have to kick it in the guts anyways so that helps in this matter. But what I have found with the rexes is that especially in the 1st - 2nd gear change the car is very clunky and if you push the car off the line you really have to ride the clutch through 1st-2nd or else you will get a very hard bang in the car. Same if you are launching the car - you can't just drop the clutches on them.

People in here have mentioned the gearboxes as a problem in the rexes as well. Let me tell you from first hand experience that there's nothing fantastic about the R34 getrag gearbox. I've busted mine twice - and Im sure not the only one out there do so. The design of the getrag makes it very very easy to do. And unlike the 32/33 gearbox there isnt really any options for upgrades out there unless you want to go to a dogbox or sequential.

Now - my mate Tony with his Black STi. We had some good little battles last year. I got him at Phillip Island (for the record I ran a 1.49.3 to his 1.50.8) but at Sandown it was reversed (1.24.8 to 1.25.8). BUT - at Sandown I had crappy rear tyres with consequent massive oversteer so I couldn't get the corner speeds required onto either of the straights. But he's going down next time. LOL. And he'll struggle at Calder cause from all accounts its a power track and that where I have the advantage. Winton later in the year will be a good test however.

If I can add some details about the two cars:

Two of my best friends have one a Skyline GTR34 R tune and the other a Subaru STI 2005 with about 420HP.

The GTR was more expensive and more difficult to import and get service.......The sub was bought in a garage in my town for 300000Euro and tuned for 10000Euro more.

The GTR cost 66KEuro

I drive the cars every month and it is just not possible to say this one is better or that one.

In luxembourg we have many hills and mountains like Gunma Japan.More then 150kmh in a street is not possible. The Sub is easy to drive and has unlimited funfactor on this streets.Even on the Highway it bust every thing.Because speed limit is 130KMH and the police will kill you if you pull more then 200KMH.Allways traffic, that means even the Lambos get busted.

When we go to Germany with the GTR and we can pull up to 315KMH it is just enough to bust the AMGs and Lambos because here is no Speed limit.

The GTR is not so funny to drive on the country side roads ,but is better on the Highway not only in End speed but also in high speed handling (weight, V-spec2)

For driving on the country side and move like a thunderbolt trough the roads I drive the Sub. People turn thier heads not because of the looking ,but the sound(Boxer) and speed. But then when I have to go out and drive on the highway at night (or day) I chose the GTR. People turn the heads 360° when I come up with this car. It is the ultimate agressive killer on the road in Lux. And needless to say that still it is damn fast on country roads........The legend and the feeling of driving Japan it self.

That is my experience with this two cars........

:P

thanks guys the last bunch of replies have been great.

one last question though.....i was talking to an importer the other day and he said that the R32 is the fastest, then the 33 then the 34(i think due to weight) i like the look of the 34, hate the 32, but the 33 seems to have some of the better features of both.

so.....whats the 33 like as a car compared to the 34? obviously its alot cheaper, but does it drive and perform well? is it easy to get more power out of it? does it have the automatic power split thing that the 34 has (where it puts power to the front when needed?)

thanks again!!!! :D

In a word - wrong, the 33 is the heavyweight of the trio (although it is not that much heavier!) I'd still go the 34, much more refined. HPI did quote that the order of quickness was 32, 34, 33 - but once you start to mod them it doesn't matter, they all use the same drivetain, but with improvements in the computer systems in subsequent models.

Although I love my 32, I think the 34 is a great car, if I had the folding stuff I'd get a 34 :)

I've never been too keen on the 33.

full-boost. Faster depends on what you are talking about. In a 1/4 mile race then yes I believe the 32 is the fastest due to its weight.

But in a lap around a race track the 34 will be the quickest. The technology advances in the ATTESA etc are far superiour in the R34.

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
    • OK, so again it has been a bit of a break but it was around researching what had been done since I didn't have access to Neil's records and not everything is obvious without pulling stuff apart. Happily the guy who assembled the engine had kept reasonable records, so we now know the final spec is: Bottom end: Standard block and crank Ross 86.5mm forgies, 9:1 compression Spool forged rods Standard main bolts Oil pump Spool billet gears in standard housing Aeroflow extended and baffled sump Head Freshly rebuilt standard head with new 80lb valve springs Mild porting/port match Head oil feed restrictor VCT disabled Tighe 805C reground cams (255 duration, 8.93 lift)  Adjustable cam gears on inlet/exhaust Standard head bolts, gasket not confirmed but assumed MLS External 555cc Nismo injectors Z32 AFM Bosch 023 Intank fuel pump Garret 2871 (factory housings and manifold) Hypertune FFP plenum with standard throttle   Time to book in a trip to Unigroup
    • I forgot about my shiny new plates!
    • Well, apparently they do fit, however this wont be a problem if not because the car will be stationary while i do the suspension work. I was just going to use the 16's to roll the old girl around if I needed to. I just need to get the E90 back on the road first. Yes! I'm a believer! 🙌 So, I contacted them because the site kinda sucks and I was really confused about what I'd need. They put together a package for me and because I was spraying all the seat surfaces and not doing spot fixes I decided not to send them a headrest to colour match, I just used their colour on file (and it was spot on).  I got some heavy duty cleaner, 1L of colour, a small bottle of dye hardener and a small bottle of the dye top coat. I also got a spray gun as I needed a larger nozzle than the gun I had and it was only $40 extra. From memory the total was ~$450 ish. Its not cheap but the result is awesome. They did add repair bits and pieces to the quote originally and the cost came down significantly when I said I didn't need any repair products. I did it over a weekend. The only issues I had were my own; I forgot to mix the hardener into the dye two coats but I had enough dye for 2 more coats with the hardener. I also just used up all the dye because why not and i rushed the last coat which gave me some runs. Thankfully the runs are under the headrests. The gun pattern wasn't great, very round and would have been better if it was a line. It made it a little tricky to get consistent coverage and I think having done the extra coats probably helped conceal any coverage issues. I contacted them again a few months later so I could get our X5 done (who the f**k thought white leather was a good idea for a family car?!) and they said they had some training to do in Sydney and I could get a reduced rate on the leather fix in the X5 if I let them demo their product on our car. So I agreed. When I took Bec in the E39 to pick it up, I showed them the job I'd done in my car and they were all (students included) really impressed. Note that they said the runs I created could be fixed easily at the time with a brush or an air compressor gun. So, now with the two cars done I can absolutely recommend Colourlock.  I'll take pics of both interiors and create a new thread.
