hey are any of u guys from perth cause i need to know some car dealers that sell good nissan 180sx i have like $11,000 to spend

Raj at Jap Parts had the cleanest manual SIL80 for $9990 you missed out, email him on [email protected] as I saw a 180 the other day but not sure on price, you can see the cars how they arrive.

If you find one on the net email me the details and I can tell you about the car if I can.

Shan,

I can appreciate your point of view, what shits me is the "back-door" way government goes about changing laws. Does anyone else think its a bit fishy that these changes have come in just in time for the Japanese 1989 model year? (so many CLASSIC cars from the land of the rising sun that year GTR, MX-5, MR2 Turbo etc. etc.) Also guys, when I'm back on my feet financially, will I still be able to import a modified MX5 as a race/rally only proposition? And when I've caned the absolute you-know-what out of it and killed something mechanically, will I still be able to strip it, drop a nice ported 13B (with the donor's cars brakes etc.) get the conversion fully engineered (e.g. new compliance plate fitted), then get it registered?

There still seems to me to be ways around pathetic compliance hassles, if you've got the time and money.

P.S. If I can't do the above, how will that "Bullet Roadster" (you know highly modded MX-5's with twin turbo Lexus motors) company go with their business?

Read the regs they came out in July 1989 which is why it is called MOTOR VEHICLE STANDARDS ACT 1989 the Bullet like the DRB Cobra is on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles so read below it will explain all.

I think it's just coincidence that the better cars to come out of japan started in 1989-1990 and the rules are being changed "in the nick of time". As Nigel said the regulations were made up in 1989.

The guys that do the Bullet Roadster re-engineer their cars, and its on the SEVS list, as is the R32.

As for getting a race import in, you can providing you have a level 3 CAMS license. However no compliance plates are issued to it at any stage, and your import approval is different to the ones you get when you apply for a regular import. So there's not really any way you can register that shell with its original history. The only legal way to do it is to use it as a donor car, to rebuild a legally registered car. Its a fine line and there's a bit of fiddling around though.

this weeks gazette just got published, and well... no mention of the change of laws... so we got another week at least... which means that April cars will now be eligible

Hang on.

eg. Can I import a <10k race/rally GTR and use it as a donor to say a chassis with a blown up engine that's registered/complied here already then have it engineered and legally registered? (ie use basically everything but the chassis)

Yes, as long as you are using the original chassis that was complied and engineered, then you could swap everything over.

I rang DOTARS today to make sure they received my 'Application to import' forms by fax....as it took almost 1 hour in the post office and many failed attempts to go thru.

I asked the lady on the phone did the changes get gazetted last night, she kinda laughed and said "nooo", I asked when she thought they would and she replied " not for a little while yet I imagine"...?

She may just have been the secetary and had as much Idea to import laws as the cleaners..but it sure sounded promising for any potential last minute importers :D

$15k onroad for a stock R32 GTS-T.. you have to be pretty keen!

Is that with the extra 2k compliance costs?? pred... hopeing to get something for about 300,000-350,000.... (not 100% if this is realistic...correct me if im wrong)

i was thinking that maybe i could import a 32gtst later this year.. probably a 92/93 model (which is apparently the same price of the 89/90models) and import under sevs.. i was thinking that because the side intrusion bars come standard that should lower the compliancing costs siginifcantly.. everything is a few years newer as well which means that i can sell it for a little bit more later on when the time comes.... just my random thoughts/dribble. :(

No legally in many states.. you'd have to ask your transport department in a "theoretical" phone call.

yeah, with the compliance costs of about $4k actually. It was just a rough figure looking at a few jap dealers and auction sites.

I was trying to work out what a newer car would cost.. as I imported a car, but it was 1989.. I've just been having a look at some of the newer ones and trying to work out their value under SEVS.

My car was $7200 landed (15 year certificate not included in that), and was 250,000yen for a complete stocker.. you can work it from there.. if you're looking at a car 400,000yen , for which you'd get a late model manual for that price, then that is only $1800AUD more for the vehicle itself in japan.. then shipping, etc all that is the same... so the landed price is really just the price difference in japan :(

You just have to allow the extra $3-4k SEVS compliance which is the more expensive part. .. actually that works out at about $13k.. not too bad..

If you get a grade4 and pay top dollar then I guess $15k is still decent if you really love the r32.

Its just that the R33 can be found locally for almost the same prices these days, and might get a different set of rims with it, etc. . It doesn't *really* stack up logically unless you really do like the R32 just for emotional reasons :(

BULLSH1T! you can change the engine, in your car and just notify the rego office of the change and provide the new number (as long as it is not stolen!!).

you can also change the diff, if you blow the original - same with the gearbox. If you bend a panel, then just bolt a new one on! it is the same sh1t for the whole car. you could have a complied BODY only and rebulid the whole FN car (providing it was not listed as written off - but why would you use that body to start with!?!?!).

I could buy a car that had all the paneds dented, blown engine and box etc and rebuild it with replacement donor parts! as long as they are not stolen, there is nothing wrong with that.

Like I said IT IS NOT ILLEGAL IN ALL STATES. In Victoria now, this is illegal.. Used to be able to be done, can't do it now.

It is to stop cars like common aussie delivered cars, i.e. WRX'es getting done dodgy. Buying a stolen recovered one wrecked one for $2k at auctions, buying a complete car from Japan for $10k.. swapping stuff over, selling for $20k. If there were no processes in place everybody would be doing it.

Obviously it's different in NSW.. Calm down ..

So what if your engine throws a rod, you can't replace the engine with one from another car? The engine is the only other part of the car that the registration authories are interested in recording the details of (i.e. engine #). what if you have a prang and the front guards, bonnet bar require replacement???

it is not REBITRTHING - which is illeagle EVERYWHERE, but rebuilding the SAME car!?!? I can't see how vicroads can say you cannot rebuild a car.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
