When you consider the fact that your car will onlyl be sitting around for acouple of minutes, you really don't need to use the turbo timer. The oil in the turbo isn't going to cool down in a couple of minutes, it's mainly for if you park your car for a couple of hours or more. As for the smoking thing, personally if I saw someone do it I'd grab the nearest fire extinguisher and put it out while their smoking it :D

Bingo, where I work that is the biggest problem, everything must be grounded as the flow of solvent produces it's own static charge on the containers as you fill them.

I don't want to be around here if 500,000L+ of solvent happens to go bang!

Myth busters is weak, they only do one test which if you ask any scientist, is a crock of shit. Mobile phones can and have started fires in patrol stations.

If someone was smoking near me filling up with petrol I would take it from them and put it out if they didn’t do so on their own. Not because I am paranoid but because I don’t take unnecessary risks when they can easily be avoided without putting anyone out.

I've heard the turbo can decrease temp from hooning to idling by as much as half it's temp.

Dono if that's true.. never measured.

I thought the idea of the turbo timer wasn't to let the oil cool per se, it was to let the oil keep flowing (while the engine is running) through the turbos to cool them. When you turn off the engine, the oil stops flowing and that's when the turbo seals can crack.

Anyhoo, if I need to let the turbos cool I do one of the following:

1. (if servo is busy), just line up behind someone that is filling up. Waiting for them to do their thing is usually long enough.

2. (if servo is empty), just line my car up with the pump and wait the required time, then turn it off.

Wow, i didn't realise there would be so many people so nonchalant about smoking in a gas station. Even if history seems to give the all clear. Turbo timer yeah, I sometimes fill up when the car hasn't shut off yet, because i think the chance of something sparking or whatever in the engine won't affect me at the other end of the car filling up. But smoking in such proximety to the bowser is just wrong. Its akin to somebody handing you a gun and saying, don't worry about having the safety on, its unlikely its going to go off accidentally.

Yeh u cant light a can of petrol without a naked flame, just a ciggie wont do it, it just goes out. Still im not saying its not bad practice.

No the tank isnt pressurised (sp?) how would the fuel get out? air pump?

I heard some place that the reason for the mobile phone is also linked to the bowsers computers getting confused and not being able to screw you over to maximum efficency. Same as in planes.

Leaving the engine running can cause static buildup and then u get an arc from the nozzle to the tank filler and boom. Thats y all aircraft have a little wire that you attach to a grounding point when u fill it up, on or off. A few years back some goons in PNG were doing a hot refuel on a Puma and it went pear shaped cause some fool forgot to ground it, boom 20 odd ppl dead.

Hot day, empty fuel tank, open it heard a psssst noise? That's pressure pushing fumes out of the tank!@!! :flamer:

You have more chance of being blown up with the tank empty than full.. the liquid is less dangerous than having a bunch of fumes.

I'm not saying it'll light with a nakid flame let alone a ciggy but... i mean.. you're killing yourself already why take out a whole servo with you? It amazes me people WANT to smoke in a servo - I say do it on your own time and get the **** away from me if I'm gonna be be fried chicken atleast I'm gonna grease myself up first :aroused:

Hmm god point, it does do that doesnt it, i think the cap has a crappy plastic valve in it. So u can get lower pressure but not higher pressure. It would prolly not stand up to any serious pressure though, just there to stop fumes leaking out.

      This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.

      Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.       My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.

      Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno

      Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
