please disregard this advice...

driving a GTR on P's is not legal. we do not advocate doing anything illegal.

we would rather you have fun an live, than have extreme fun and die

I totally understand the consequences and prepared to accept whatever comes at me. At the same token I do drive safely and take consideration for other drivers as I drive as a daily commuter....I don't speed and I don't drive like a **** jockey...I drive the GTR for the enjoyment and love of GTRs...not to prove myself to anyone or bragging rights (why would I need to?)...I don't see much wrong with it in regards to the dangers, more the legal side of things...

Hey man i went throught the same investigation process as u, was on phone to vic roads and just cars.

Basicly the R32 Gts-T is just under the power to weight ration ist comes in at 124.03 kw / tonner and ur aloud to have 125 kw per tonne.

However put on an exhuast and u will bump urself over the limit, and the guys from vic roads said, that ones the vehicle has had any performance modifications increasing the vehicles power it must be re assesed by vic roads and certified as a P plate legal vehicle.

As ppl have said yeh you will prbly get away with it.

However, INSURANCE, in the event of a claim, and ur car is over the limit and not certified by vic roads as a P plate car, then you claims will be rejected.

So unless u riding completely stock, you may get away with P/W, you will get insurcance, however you wont be coverd.

Call vic roads and Just cars to verify what i have said.

And anyone that dosnt believe me about insurance, wip out that fat policy you got when u insured your car and have a read. if you cant find it cal just cars.

Alot of ppl are cruising around un insured but are unaware of it, and pay a massive premium for nothing.

And yeh ive heard of ppl geting a payout, lets just say they were lucky, cos if insurance can find a way as easy as power to weight to get out of a payment, by all means they will.

SO in conclusion man, Stock its legal, Modfiied in anyway that increases performance it is illegal, you may get away with fines but will not be coved with insurance.

I drive a GTR on my Ps as well, and I've got the same opinion as above. :)

Most of the time cops, even if they pull you over, don't bring up the power to weight ratio.

GTS-4 vs GTST....i'd go the GTS-4 simply coz its better for launching and you'll have more traction after mods.

ali, maverick and others. Just so long as you realise that when the chips are down, your opinion does'nt matter, only the law. I see nothing the matter with ppl taking their own risks, so long as they know and are willing to wear the consequences. But - what about some massive pay-out that you just can't meet? Someone else, then, who did'nt volunteer for it wears the consequences?

Good point. But lets remember that MOST gtsts are modified, so exceed the power to weight ratio anyway. Yes a GTR is illegal to drive, but then again, so are most GTSTs. Even if i bought a stock GTST, i would modify it, so ends up being the same thing.

Oh yeah and about the consquences, I'm willing to accept bear them. If there's something I can't meet, I'm sure my old man will ;-)

Get the gts4, they are less common, and as they weigh quite a bit more than the gtst, by the time you have modified it enough to exceed the power to weight restrictions, you'll be off your P's.

if everyone did a search then ther has been plenty of threads about P's and power-to-weight ratios

you will find that the power to weight ration comes from the TARE weight figure and the STOCK FLYWHEEL power of your engine

thus modification does not make a car exceed a power-to-weight ratio, and conversely you cannot buy a GTR andget it de-tuned either

maverick, ali: i appreciate that you have GTRs and are on your P's and i have no problem with this myself at all. i just don't think its good advice to tell someone who is thinking of buying a car that this is a viable option without any trouble. your takign a risk and that's your decision.

its like a smoker... if you make the choice to smoke, then that's fine and its your risk. but its not good advice to tell a youngster that they will be fine if they smoke when they don't fully understand the risks involved

its doesnt matter what vicroads say at the time when the cops pull you over its there decision when i first got my r32 gtst we got puller over and fined for a high powered vechle, the copped was quite pissed off at the time he got the black book out and said what kind of car is this i say gtst r32 he said these are a rb20 turbo> i said yeah and he said you cant drive this i was unaware we couldnt drive it and i was like nah its under the power to weight your jokin arnt ya? and he going you think i pull these figures outta my ass i laughed! then hes like can i have a look under the hood and its stock so he couldnt find anything ended up getting 2 fines one for a high powered vehcle on P plates and another.

If you rR32 GTS-T is completely stock standard then it is under the power to weight ratio of 125 / tonnne, as the car comes in at 124.03 kw . tonne.

Oh yeh an to all the ppl that think its goes off the factory power to weight ratio u are wrong.

They have changed it becuase of that reason.

Vic Roads

"If your car is modified, you may also need to obtain an engineer's certificate and do your own calculations. You are also required to notify VicRoads of any significant modification. Penalties for not doing so are severe."

and hers the link to cjeck it out yourself

i know this but the cops are the boss i think we were lucky just to get away with 2 fines and no demerits

But the point is you can still mod your car aslong as it doesnt add kw at the flywheel

Calculating the capacity to weight ratio

   * Capacity to weight ratio is the capacity in litres divided by the weight in tonnes

   * Power to weight ratio is the power in kw divided by the weight in tonnes.

In doing calculations, weight is specified in tonnes (1000kg = 1 tonne); capacity is specified in litres (1000ml = 1 litre); power is specified in kilowatts (kw) and is measured at the engine flywheel.

The weight of a vehicle is the unladen mass specified by the manufacturer for the stock-standard vehicle (without options).

Now im not 100% what adds kw where.

Ie: does a FMIC add kw at the fly?

but im sure a 3" exhaust wouldnt

of course an exhaust will add power... its funny how mods to ur car have to be taken into consideration for power to weight because it alters it from factory specs yet weight has to remain factory even if it weighs more because of mods done to the car... or bog :)

seems a bit stupid really...

If your buying a Skyline, since when would you care if things are legal or not.  Sooner of later you will be spending money on the car to make it ILLEGAL.

yeah exactly, not many i know wouldnt start to modify it.... you buy a skyline and the bug starts to hit you.... you gotta start buying shit to make it look better, or sound better, or go slightly faster.... i doubt many of you would say.... nah im keepin mine completely stock...

how many P platers do you see driving 33 GTS-T. there are heaps. they are over the P/W regardless of mods. the real idea behind the alw is to stop P platers getting into them and having enough power to get themselves into situations they otherwise wud not have.

i got pulled over the other night for a 'random' breath test. it was the first time pulled over in my skyline (33 GTS-T) and the cops went over it tested me informed me of the p/w. they did the usual checks of licence etc and came back returned my licence and asked me to have a great night. i wasn't being an idiot i was jsut driving home.

although i cud've quite easily been done for it.

end of the story is that there are a lot of people driving cars that easily exceed the p/w including commos and fords.

make ur INFORMED choice and live with the consiquences if u choose to overlook certain laws.

my $1 worth looking at the length of it

    • My thinking is that if the O2 sensor is shot then your entire above described experience is pure placebo.
    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
