i always wondered what that was too...

possibly an emissions sorta thing? i know the turbo cars don't have it and require a charcoal box for importing - but mine didnt need one (charcoal box) so i figured this could have been it?

I think it has 2 purposes:

1. reduce intake noises (like a resonator in an exhaust system)

2. provide a reserve of air for the engine to take in should you suddenly floor it

I read an article from a link in a thread on here somewhere that experimented with removing this and replacing it with a straight pipe. The engine lost torque and intake noise was louder with it removed.

Its used to stop reversion through the intake system during throttle transients. Its not used to provide a resverve of air for snap throttle. They also used them on all the older XR6's and maybe the 8's cant quite remember.

I have removed the resonator and replaced it with a piece of 3" pipe, on my R33 GTS25, I don't know about the car loosing torque, but without the resonator the induction is quite noisey, when the engine is under load, it kinda screams as it hits 5500rpm.

I'll post up a pic tomorrow of the set up I have got.

because turbos presurize the intake air, where as the intake air on an NA is sucked through, but not continuosly, it pulses at high frequency, the chamber acts as a damper and smooths the air being drawn through. there was a big right up and tests done a while ago in HPI, different sized ones give different amounts of power and torque, sacrificing power in other areas, and a decrease all round without one.

  • 3 months later...

I Have done this mod, as I said in an earlier post since then I have had a bit of time and experimented around with it, and after a few back to back road tests there is a loss in torque, not a great deal but still noticable.

With out getting both systems dynoed It's hard to tell which has the better top end power, but with the custom intake the car has awesome induction noise :)

    • I can see between the water jacket and cyl 3 there wasn't a hard line of combustion gas. It certainly appears that the issue is coming from there. Yes, checked the tension. All at 100ft lbs where I set them 5 years ago. These blocks can crack but generally when they have been over bored. Mine is only 0.5mm oversize at 89.5mm. They break between cylinders around the 91mm mark. No sign of that with mine. My gut feeling is the head gasket lifted a while back when the studs stretched and i bandaided it by retorquing the studs. It's finally let go.

    • So, version 4 intake is on its way I was looking at these a while ago but at around $200 or more it was a little pricey for something that might not work, but, I had it in my watch list, but, I got a message saying it was on special, and I had a code thingie to use, it eventually came in at $120 delivered, so BAM, BUY NOW.....LOL I'll need to have a look when it arrives but I feel it will "look" better than what I currently have, as it comes with a PCV fitting, so I will be able to get rid of the alloy pipe that goes to the throttle body with the PCV fitting  Well, that's what the voices in my head are telling me  Oh, and this happened today Yeap, it was a Trojan, and it was cheap, so I headed back to the hardware store and actually spent a little bit more on a heavy duty,  one that was actually recommended by a plumber mate, a Cyclone one with a fibreglass handle that is actually rated for clay The broken shovel will eventually be "modified" into a short handle shovel
