I was pulled over on the way home by an unmarked commonwhore trying to get me to race em and they went over the whole car and thankfully didnt find anything to book me for but they did warn me that although the bonnet isn't illegal, it is a liability in an accident if the carbon fibre shatters and causes damage/injury.

carbon bonnet isn't illegal? i thought it was?

It is illegal only for the cars that is sold in Australia....like the S14 200SX,REX,Corolla etc....

for import car, police cant do anything with it...just tell them it come with the damn car...

Hmmm...so it is not illegal for our skylines to have a CF bonnet here in queensland? I also heard from people that its illegal to have a CF bonnet here....Pls advice~~

Basically I posted for this reason as I've heard conflicting opinions also and have had bonnet for 4 months now on daily driver.

i dunno still, before i went out and bought a carbon fibre bonnet i would want solid eveidence that proves that its not illegal, because as we all know 1 cop will tell you 1 thing and another will give u a ticket for the same thing and let you deal with going to court and proving it. hence wasting your time and $$ anyhow. thats what i hate, they dont get in shite for handing out defects on car if its not true and u gotta prove it. (e.g the carbon bonnet).

I would also try ringing up your insurance company and ask them if they will cover you if you had a CF bonnet...they should have a fair idea of whats legal and whats not. That said, there has been a handful of ppl that have been defected for CF bonnets in the past so go figure..??

If it's not standard, you can get done for it!

pretty much.....even with mod plates, you can be fined.....what one cop says doesnt speak for the entire force. The majority will fine you for a cf bonnet as they dont meet crumple requirements etc.. You were very lucky not to be fined!

I spoke with two modification certified mechanics and both told me that if they latch and hinge in the correct places, there is nothing wrong with them and no plate is required.

From what i've been told by both RTA and Police is that they dont "shatter" correctly in a crash and that the shards of fiberglass/carbon can be dangerous to the people in the car and around it.

Is it 100% carbon anyway?  Because if not you would be getting done/warned for your mostly fiberglass bonnet with a final layer of carbon on it so it looks pretty.

Mine is 100% CF, but the cop said it would be illegal either way because it affects the crumple zone and the bits of CF will chop pedestrians up into teency pieces, or something to that effect.

someone should start making carbon/kevlar mix parts...

Entire cars are made out of this stuff (Holden Giocattolo most notable car made locally from it) and when it gets smashed, the kevlar holds it all together (well something does, i'm pretty sure its the kevlar) and it smashes, but holds its shape, pieces don't go flying off etc...

Also, for bonnets, whats the point? (apart from if you have a cooling problem) as an Aluminium GTR bonnet is probably only .5 to 1kg heavier than most 'carbon' bonnets out there

    • Shouldn't need a "base map" for anything other than guidance to ignition tuning. You just need the engine capacity right, the injector size right, and something, almost anything, for a VE map. On an NA engine, fuelling is almost completely a function of load signal & rpm. It should run and drive with a completely flat fuel map. It will be too lean under load, but that's easily fixed. We used to tune all ECUs without any base map. There were no such things (until someone had tuned a near stock engine on one, and then they had a "base map".
    • What did you actually buy/how much did it cost? When I got mine in like.. 2017...? 2019? the aim was to run Torque for gauges via ODB2 and things like Track Addict/Laptimers/Dashcam/Reversecam/Spotify etc. Mine never broke, but I wonder if you've got the same needs (it sounds like it). Cause I liked the idea of being able to do anything with it. That said, yours also cost 3x the cost of what I spent so... food for thought.
    • For me there is a massive difference in manufacturer or big brand crippled android (Sony, Kenwood etc) vs the sort of thing I've installed here, which is basically just a tablet in DIN form factor with open Android, and the other model of course is mirroring - Android Auto/Carplay. I hate the locked down manufacturer and AA options where they decide what apps I'm allowed to install, including the Launcher but also importantly things like Ecutek (for this car) or Real Dash (Stagea) are not supported. Plus those crippled versions tend to be slower due to both overheads and lower spec hardware. On the other hand, when this breaks I'll likely be in trouble for support....but how is that different to owning an Infiniti anyway
    • Yeah, Duncan is helping sell me back to Android devices. I've hated the whole Android head units due to their speed issues. Even in my old Hyundai Kona (2022 model), it behind the scenes was Android, and slow and shitty to start up. Once running wasn't bad, but still a good 15 to 30 seconds.
    • My roof rails are off atm on the E39 until the rust is fixed. I did find another little bit of surface rust under the rails when I took them off. As @soviet_merlin said I'd just leave them alone unless you're planning on ensuring they're properly sealed. I was on the fence about leaving them off as the delete is still a thing in BMW E39's but I feel like the car is missing something (er, it is, der) with them off and I'm looking forward to putting them back on.
